2022 Audi TT RS Design

Exterior Details

On a more serious note, it’s not just the colour that attracts the eye in the case of this Audi supercar. It’s as much the simply fabulous, glossy paint finish and the wafer-thin shut lines together with the beautifully detailed (optional) gloss black trimmings that all combine to massage the senses.

The basic shape of the TT is familiar enough, having retained most of the eye-catching yet simple elements of the revolutionary original, and although its dimensions have grown across the three-and-a-bit generations that have followed, it remains a compact sportster endowed with decidedly cosy cabin dimensions exaggerated by the marked roof curvature and long, sloping tailgate.

As you might expect, opening and shutting the two hefty doors is a pleasure, thanks to the reassuring thunk they make and the precision feel of the process—the effortlessness of which almost seems surreal within a structure solid enough to make a Tiger tank feel like a packet of corn flakes. All of this simply reinforces the feel good factor.

Interior Details

For those lucky souls who enter the cabin, there are even more details to appreciate. Take a close look inside the door jambs and around the sills and you’ll notice that the paint finish is consistently flawless (and that nasties such as spot weld points are absent).

This fastidious detailing is maintained throughout the cabin, which in this instance featured gorgeous quilted nappa leather and alcantara seating, as well as acres of soft-touch surfacing and a mix of textures including (optional) carbon fibre.

It’s certainly a cosy environment, although the low seating position and proximity of the beautifully lined roof ensure that entering and exiting needs a conscious effort for a frame as well worn as mine.

Finding a perfect driving position is not difficult though, thanks to the multi-adjustable seating and leather-wrapped, flat-bottomed steering wheel, which also sports alcantara inlays (as does the stubby shift lever).

This is what I call, in relative terms, old school Audi detailing. Hard surfaces are hard to find, and rotary MMI controllers and tactile switch gear provide functionality beyond mere touch. This makes operating the brilliantly informative and clear multi-functional driver display more intuitive than might be the case in some of the later Ingolstadt productions, where the eye needs to wander off the road. Truth be told, though, the ambience of the TT is not so much luxurious as it is clinically precise.

Cabin Display

The extent of the information on display is terrific and includes:

  • Front and rear camera images
  • A G-meter
  • Boost levels
  • Sat nav
  • Audio
  • A full run-down on the car’s state of play, with details like:
    • Fuel consumption
    • Range/level
    • Odometer
      Dual speedo displays
    • Engine revs
    • Tyre pressures
    • And more

Naturally, there’s also cruise control on board, along with keyless stop/start, auto air con, electric folding mirrors (optional gloss black in this instance), and electric one-touch windows.

*Fuel consumption combined¹: 8.7 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined¹: 200–199 g/km.

Pure roadster experience

The hood of the Audi TT RS Roadster opens at the push of a button in ten seconds flat.

Hop in and have fun

The power of the 2.5-litre 5-cylinder inline TFSI engine (Fuel consumption combined¹: 8.7 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined¹: 200–199 g/km) is tangible when you put your foot down on the accelerator. The sound will give you goosebumps. The car can accelerate from stationary to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds thanks to 294 kW of power. In the process, the standard 7-speed S tronic shifts gears so fluidly that you can scarcely feel it. quattro permanent all-wheel drive transfers the power of the Audi TT RS Roadster¹ safely to the road. In the standard version, it can accelerate up to 250 km/h. However, you have the option of increasing the top speed to 280 km/h.

The Porsche Cayman S is almost the same price as the RS, and it offers a very different experience. The finely tuned chassis makes for a sublime steer which the Audi can’t quite match. The Porsche’s supremacy isn’t all-conquering though, as the turbo-four isn’t a patch on the Audi’s five-cylinder. The Porsche’s motor sounds dull in comparison and feels a backward step from the 981-generation flat-six engines.

The new BMW M2 comes in at £64,890 and offers a more usable four-seat cabin, even more power and an entertaining rear-drive balance. Its muscular turbocharged straight-six engine doesn’t sound nearly as good as the Audi’s though, and the M2 is a few tenths slower in the sprint to 62mph, but it’s still a deeply satisfying performance coupe.

Then there’s the Alpine A110, which has an attitude and character all of its own. The French coupe trades big power for low weight; it’s delicate and malleable, where the TT leans towards brute force for a more intense driving experience. It might be far slower than the TT on paper, but the Alpine is truly captivating to drive and costs about the same in more powerful S form.

Audi TT RS: in detail

  • Engine and gearbox > The 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder and quattro all-wheel-drive system dominate the experience
  • Performance and 0-60mph time > Straight-line performance is sensational, and a match for much newer and more powerful sports cars
  • Ride and handling > The TT RS falls short of being truly rewarding, but there’s enough drama and ability to keep you engaged
  • MPG and running costs > The hottest TT isn’t exactly frugal, but it should return better fuel economy than a BMW M2
  • Interior and tech > A home-run interior from Audi, its minimalist vibe, exceptional build quality and clever touches stand the test of time
  • Design > The 2019 facelift brought a touch more aggression to the TT RS, while retaining the pert form of the original

Audi TT RS

Audi TT RS

Buying & owning

Everyday costs, plus how reliable and safe it is

The BMW M2 is around the same price as the TT RS, but you can pick up an Alpine A110 for less. It’s a similar story with the Cayman, with the S costing a similar price, but cheaper versions available. However, don’t forget that Porsche will require you to fork out more on optional equipment to match the TT RS’s standard features, such as climate control, heated seats, cruise control and leather seat trim.

As mentioned, a limited-run model called the Iconic Edition bids farewell to the TT as it nears the end of production. It comes with more aggressive bumpers, a larger rear spoiler, black wheels and Nardo Grey paint. The interior gets yellow stitching and other highlights on the dashboard and seats, as well as a numbered badge on the gear lever. However, the Iconic Edition is much more expensive than the ‘standard’ TT RS and just 11 examples are coming to the UK.

Seven-Speed Automated Transmission And AWD

via Audi

Audi’s closest competitors produce more power: 450 hp for the 2022 BMW M2 Competition, 490 hp for the 2022 Chevrolet Corvette 1LT Stingray Coupe, and the 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman offers several engine options with power varying from 300 to 493 horsepower. However, the Audi TT RS has a superior handling feature lacking in the other three sports cars: the Quattro all-wheel drive. The others use RWD.

The Audi TT RS engine sends power to a lively 7-speed dual-clutch automated transmission and center limited-slip differential. The seven-speed works in various modes. A computer selects the gears for the fully automatic mode based on the selection of D (Drive) or S (Sport) programs. In manual mode, the driver shifts gears with the selector lever or optional rocker switches on the steering wheel for smooth, dynamic, and extremely precise changes.

2022 Audi TT RS Performance

Those fortunate enough to own a set of keys for such a sporting bolide will be much more interested in what lurks under the clamshell bonnet, and here the TT RS truly excels. The straight-five injected and turbocharged engine has been refined over the years, during which time it has earned a multitude of international awards.

Notwithstanding its ballistic 294kW (395HP)/480Nm (354lb/ft) peak outputs, it idles with unusual smoothness and lack of aural fuss. But give the gas pedal a decent prod and those five cylinders, with their unusual firing order, transform into a snarling, mildly off-beat symphony that’s sure to be accompanied by the broadest of smiles and simply devastating forward momentum.

Audi’s famed quattro driveline ensures that no energy is fruitlessly expended in spinning wheels as the scant 3.7 second 0-100km/h (62.2 mph) elapsed time indicates—but this diminutive coupe does more than scamper off the line like a scalded hare.

With the aid of a slick and decisive 7-speed dual clutch S Tronic gearbox that’s very willing to drop cogs in DYNAMIC mode in particular, this engine has muscles to flex from as low as 2000rpm. Traversing urban roads with constantly variable traffic flows never triggers a feeling of lethargy from the five-pot mill.

Indeed, it is rarely necessary to employ the services of the wheel-mounted paddle shifters, since the transmission boasts sufficient grey matter to do the right thing most of the time. If the mood arises, though, using a heavy foot and flexible fingers to work those shifters really does produce the most electrifying performance—aided by activating the sound flap in the exhaust system, which terminates in two large circular pipes that warn would-be-challengers to approach with caution.

For the record, this test unit featured the deletion of the usual 250km/h (155mph) speed limiter to allow for a top speed of 280km/h (174mph).

This car’s straight line performance is nothing less than electrifying, as are the brakes. But the RS does more than leave vapour trails in its wake, as its small dimensions, huge 255/30ZR20 Pirelli P-Zeros, quattro drivetrain, inherently stiff springs, and (optional) adaptive suspension prove. All these inputs combine with surprisingly responsive steering to produce a machine that can change direction with pleasing certainty, backed by limpet-like grip.

Sure, it’s not a scalpel in the mould of a Porsche Cayman, but to expect such precision would be a tad unfair, given that the Audi’s underpinnings owe more to a Golf hatchback rather than an out-and-out sportscar. What it offers is a ride, even in the sportiest setting, that feels distinctly firm—but with a measure of pliancy that blunts the worst effects of sharp ridges and deep-set manhole covers (even if it doesn’t entirely eliminate them).

As might be expected, that sport-biased rubber can set up a bit of a din on coarse tar. But in cruise mode on smoother surfaces, the TT RS is decently refined, thanks to excellent suppression of wind noise and an almost total isolation of mechanical interference—until that gas pedal is exercised in a downward direction!

Is the 2022 Audi TT RS redesigned?

Sort of. To celebrate the end of the Audi TT RS’ time in the US market, Audi launched a Heritage Edition of the vehicle. While the fundamental features in the Audi TT RS have primarily remained the same in regular models, the Heritage Edition has undergone a design facelift.

When looking at non-Heritage Edition models, the 2021 and 2022 models of the TT RS are very similar. So whether you get the most recent edition or not, the fundamental aspects of the car remain the same: a 394-horsepower, 5-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive coupe.

Standout features of the Audi TT RS include:

  • Diamond-stitched leather seating
  • In-dash navigation
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity
  • Bang and Olufsen stereo
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Available blind spot monitoring

2022 Audi TT RS vs. 2021 Audi TT RS: what changed?

Ready to check out what’s new for the 2022 model year? Let’s take a look at some of the new features you’ll get if you buy the latest model

Heritage Edition Styling

The most notable change for the 2022 Audi TT RS is the Heritage Edition models, of which Audi produced only 50 cars. While it’s pretty unlikely you’ll get your hands on one of these cars, let’s go over the upgrades from the 2021 TT RS.

The 50 cars have five unique color schemes, including:

  • Alpine White with Ocean Blue leather
  • Helios Blue with Diamond Silver leather
  • Stone Gray with Crimson Red leather
  • Tizian Red with Havana Brown leather
  • Malachite Green with Cognac Brown leather

Other new features included with the Heritage Edition are the 20-inch alloy wheels, sport exhaust, and OLED tail lights. If you snag one of these cars, your vehicle’s heritage status will be seen on the rear quarter-glass window, with a Heritage Edition logo etched in. Finally, this Heritage vehicle has an increased speed limit from 155 to 174 mph.

Should you buy a 2022 Audi TT RS?

Should you buy the 2022 Audi TT RS—or go for an earlier, simpler version?
Since the standard 2022 TT RS had no significant changes from previous years, you may be better off going for an earlier, less expensive model. After all, the 2021 Audi TT RS delivers all the notable features of the newest model year, save for the Heritage Edition’s color schemes.

The efficient five-cylinder engine boasts an impressive fuel economy, with 20 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. In addition, the luxurious, technology-forward interior provides optimal comfort and style for passengers and drivers alike. With all-wheel traction and 20-inch wheels in recent models, you’ll get about everything you need from the 2021 TT RS.

The Audi TT RS Passes With Ease And Sticks Through The Turns

via Audi

While the 2022 Chevrolet Corvette 1LT Stingray is the fastest accelerating sports car in the segment, reaching 60 mph in a blistering 2.9 seconds and the quarter mile in a mere 11.3 seconds, the 2022 Audi TT RS Coupe is a respectable distance behind. The RS accelerates to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds taking 11.9 seconds to reach the quarter mile, and tops out with a maximum speed of 155 mph.

For the average driver, such responsive acceleration is most evident when passing a slower car on the open highway. The seven-speed transmission effortlessly downshifts upon demand producing an immediate surge that can snap the driver’s head back until safely impacting the headrest.

The Audi RS badge signifies a car designed more for driving pleasure than comfort levels and the TT RS is no exception.

The AWD and well-tuned suspension provide better handling than most vehicles that send power only to the rear wheels, and the TT RS standard adaptive dampers provide additional stability making the sports car feel like it is going through the turns on rails. Even inexperienced drivers can take on the most challenging curves with confidence.

Passenger & boot space

How it copes with people and clutter

Just like the regular TT Coupé, the RS offers generous room for two adults upfront. And while the rear seats are really best left for shopping bags and emergencies, at least they’re there; the Alpine A110 and Porsche 718 Cayman are strict two-seaters. For something with TT RS pace and proper room for four, though, look at the BMW M2.

The TT’s lift-up tailgate makes getting larger items in and out a doddle, and the luggage area is decently proportioned. Indeed, if you fold down the rear seats you can even fit a bicycle in there – if you remove its front wheel first. You can’t do the same with the A110 or Cayman, that’s for sure. The saloon style boot opening in the M2 is small, but it offers the most luggage space overall.

Interior

The interior layout, fit and finish

It’s a case of ‘close but no cigar’ for the BMW M2 and Porsche 718 Cayman when trying to match Audi’s quality. Meanwhile, the Alpine A110 doesn’t even get close.

The aggressively bolstered sports seats and part-Alcantara steering wheel of the RS build on the already mightily impressive interior of lesser TTs, with its soft plastics, chrome accents and beautifully damped switches. Then there are the little details, such as climate controls that are integrated stylishly into the air vents, that make it special but also very easy to use.

Audi’s Virtual Cockpit is fitted as standard behind the steering wheel. This 12.3in digital screen displays your speed and engine revs while also acting as a hub for all of the infotainment functions, such as the stereo, Bluetooth and sat-nav.

The whole thing is easy to use while you’re driving, unlike the touchscreen systems in the A110 and Cayman (although the M2’s iDrive system is more intuitive again). You can scroll through the menus with a control on the steering wheel or by twisting and pressing a big rotary dial between the front seats, with some handy shortcut buttons available to take you directly to specific functions.

Audi 5-Cylinder Engine With Supercar Exhaust Note

via Audi

While the Audi TT is appealing for its attractive styling with sleek characteristic Audi headlights and a front that resembles the flagship R8 supercar, the standard trim suffers from subpar performance. However, the TT RS corrects the deficiency with a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-5 powerplant producing 394 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque.

Built with an aluminum-alloy block and cylinder head, the engine includes a 20-valve DOHC valvetrain and features Audi’s TFSI (Turbo fuel stratified injection). The system augments power output and creates optimum engine response while improving fuel efficiency with reduced emissions.

Not only does the unique 5-cylinder give the TT RS an exceptional boost, but it also produces a distinctive sound that would convince even the casual observer a supercar is passing by.

We like the Audi TT. So much so, in fact, that over the years it’s won more What Car? Awards than any other model. It’s not one of the cheaper variants that we’re focusing on here, though, or even the sporty TT S. No, this is the top dog with the big guns: the range-topping Audi TT RS.

Because the TT will soon be discontinued, the RS is now available only in Coupé form (you’ll have to seek out a used example of the Roadster version if you fancy one that offers al fresco thrills). But Audi has introduced a limited-run Iconic Edition variant, which brings more aggressive styling. This isn’t backed up by a power hike, but then the 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder petrol unit in the TT RS (an engine it shares with the Audi RS3 hot hatch) already produced a mighty 394bhp.

The Audi TT RS Luxury Interior And Superior Infotainment System

For a sports car with an emphasis on performance, the Audi TT RS has a surprisingly luxurious interior and up-to-date technology. The front row is spacious and accommodates the driver and passenger in comfortable leather seats with diamond stitching, built for support during hard cornering.

While the driver controls are well-positioned in the cabin, the interior provides limited storage, and the rear seats are so cramped even a small child would find the ride uncomfortable.

Perhaps the best feature of the Audi TT RS interior is its infotainment system with a multi-functional, 12.3-inch touchscreen touted by some critics as the highest quality in the automobile industry. The system’s connectivity options include Audi Smartphone integration, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, and Bang & Olufsen Sound System with 12 speakers.
