Not so great on the practicality front

In terms of everyday usability, the ATS-V coupe struggles a bit in terms of trunk capacity. Though, to be fair, 10.4 cubic feet isn’t that bad for the class when you note that the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe offers only 10.5 cubic feet in its trunk and the
Audi RS 5
boasts just 11.6. At least you can fold down the back seats should you need to carry bulkier objects.

Speaking of those rear seats, they’re notably cramped — even allowing for this being a sporty two-door car. Access to the rear is tight, and once installed, passengers will find legroom practically non-existent and headroom in short reserve. Use these seats for extra luggage space only.

Another area where the ATS-V lags behind its rivals is fuel economy, with this manual-transmission model EPA-rated for 16 miles per gallon city, 23 miles per gallon highway and 19 miles per gallon combined. That’s a smidge behind competitors, with the AMG C63 S Coupe boasting 18/24 mpg, the RS5 offering 18/26 mpg and the manual-transmission M4 good for 17/25 mpg.

The Good

2018 Cadillac ATS-V 

Much like BMW’s M models, Mercedes’ AMG cars and Audi’s RS line, Cadillac’s «V» is the letter code that tells you that this model means business. Hellfire-spitting engines, magnetic suspension and needle-sharp steering are to be expected. They should be comfortable, quiet and offer the luxury features you expect in exchange for spending $79,360.

Perhaps it’s the magnetic dampers, which adjust the stiffness of the suspension using electromagnets up to 1,000 times per second to keep the ATS-V smooth when cruising and knife-sharp on a hairpin. Maybe it’s the twin-turbo V6, which delivers 464 horsepower and a bottomless supply of low-end torque that makes the car feel ready to pounce at any moment. Or the 8-speed automatic transmission, which delivers blink-quick up-shifts and holds the monster motor in the prime of its power band.

But I don’t think that’s it. German automakers will gladly sell you power and well-tuned suspensions.

I think the secret sauce is in two other parts of the ATS-V. The first is the Cadillac’s chassis, which is unflappable and well-engineered from the start. The second is PTM, or performance traction management, which is one of GM’s best pieces of performance software.

PTM is a highly-advanced traction control system that allows just enough slip to make sure you’re having fun without letting the car’s power send you careening off the road. The ATS-V encourages you to push it on the road while being reasonably certain you won’t exit the corner in a heap of twisted wreckage.

The Cadillac ATS-V will rip apart Audis and Mercedes Benzes all day, but settle down to a nice comfortable highway cruise right after.

It’s not large, but it works as a real life sedan. Plus, while the carbon package pushes the ATS-V’s looks to the realm of overly-aggressive, it’s still quite a handsome thing to behold. It won’t garner the instant approval that a BMW badge might, but the ATS-V still looks at home in more upscale neighborhoods and locales.

The AT-V also has a great Bose audio system, lane-keeping assist, remote start, supremely-comfortable seats and WiFi. It’s not decked out with the latest and greatest semi-autonomous tech, but the cabin is a comfortable and well-equipped place to be for less money than any of its chief competitors.

Competent in-car technology

Since we last reviewed the ATS-V, Cadillac has equipped it with an updated version of the Cadillac User Interface (CUE) infotainment system. Straight away, the new system is easier and better to use than early CUE-equipped Cadillacs, with prompter responses to inputs on its 8-inch touchscreen. There are also advanced features like cloud-syncing for multiple driver profiles and «smart» navigation routing that can «learn» your typical commutes.

CarPlay and Android Auto. Swapping between screens and functions is easy enough, though the only physical shortcut is a home button; some rival cars offer hard buttons to jump to, say, the radio or phone interface. CUE also had some trouble working reliably with my smartphone over Bluetooth, an issue I haven’t had with that phone on any other recent test car.

Cadillac’s newest touchscreen infotainment system works well overall, though it’s not quite as slick or as polished as those of its competitors’.

To keep
gadgets
charged, you’ll find two USB ports in the small-ish center console, as well as a wireless phone charging pad inside the electrically-opening center stack compartment. Touch lightly on the bottom edge of a panel on the stack and it motors open, revealing the charge pad.

Ahead of the driver, the Cadillac ATS-V’s instrument cluster uses mostly analog gauges, which are highly legible with their red illumination but, sadly, not as slick-looking as rivals’. At the bottom is a reconfigurable color trip computer with three segments of information that can be configured to display everything from tire temperature to boost pressure. I set them up with the distance-to-empty on one side, the vehicle’s speed in the center and tire pressures on the other bookend. A color head-up display provides speed, tachometer and even shift-light information at a glance.

Safety tech is plentiful on my test car, though it’s worth noting that much of it is available only as part of paid option packages. Still, this

has parking sensors, precollision warning, automatic headlights, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist and, somewhat unusually, even an option in the cluster that can tell you how close you’re following another car, measured in seconds. Most of those are bundled into the $1,800 Safety and Security package, which also includes an upgraded alarm.

As is often the case with sporty two-doors, backseat space is at a premium.

Базовый силовой агрегат рассчитан на 226 «лошадок» при 5300 оборотов в минуту, крутящий момент которого составляет – 350 Ньютон на метр, при 2000-4000 оборотов в минуту. Сданным мотором авто разгоняется за 5.9 с, а предельная скорость составляет – 240 км/час. Потребление горючего в смешанном режиме – 8.2 л.

Фланговая же версия с мощностью в 276 «кобыл» при 5500 оборотов в минуту, а крутящий момент оценивается в 353 Ньютон на метр. От 1700 до 5500 оборотов в минуту. Время разгона с этой установкой – 6 с. Предельная же скорость составляет – 220 км/час. Средний расход топлива – 8.4 л.

В «базу» входит – передняя тормозная система Brembo, а также спортивная подвеска с 32-х см дисками. Все комплектации имеют реечное рулевое управление ZF с эл. механическим усилителем и колеблющимся передаточным соотношением.

The Bad

Other luxury sedans have much nicer interiors. A Mercedes C-Class might not delight as much on a back road, but the sheer opulence of the cabin could make you forget that. The impeccable-quality leather, metal and wood that dominate true luxury offerings are largely absent in the ATS-V where plastic sets the tone.

The ATS-V interior feels like a nice version of a regular car.

The Cadillac ATS-V felt cramped on the inside, too. I’m sure the small footprint helps it deliver its mind-bending performance, but it’s still a bit hard to stomach paying $79,360 and knowing four people would get uncomfortable after more than a few hours of driving.

Worth the price of admission

A

starts at $68,790 with destination. That’s versus the $70,145 starting price of an M4, the $70,875 you’ll pay for an RS5 and the $68,495 for the C63 Coupe or $76,495 for the C63 S.

On top of that base price, my test car added $2,300 for Recaro front seats, $1,800 for the Safety and Security package, $2,100 for the Luxury package, $1,295 for a glossy carbon-fiber engine cover, $625 for the new-for-2019 Wave Metallic paint color, $600 for black wheels, $595 for bronze-colored brake calipers, $495 for a blacked-out front grille and $175 to darken the rear chrome trim. All-in, it’s $78,775. If you wanted to add the eight-speed automatic transmission, that would cost an extra $2,000.

Buying the ATS-V also scores you two days of free on-track driving instruction at the V-Performance Academy, held at Spring Mountain Motorsport Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada. If you’re buying a performance car, you owe it to yourself to learn how to fully exploit it, especially when the track time comes free.

Cadillac will soon discontinue the ATS-V coupe; the sedan has already ended production.

The ATS-V proved that Cadillac could build a sports coupe that matched or even beat the best performers from Germany. It put a grin on my face every time I got behind the wheel — coupe or sedan, automatic or manual. Nobody would ever argue that the Cadillac ATS-V was the perfect car in its class, for all the negatives I’ve griped about thus far. But I really don’t care about its so-so practicality: the ATS-V is a fantastic car that I’d be happy to wake up to every day.

Let’s just hope Cadillac builds another sports coupe that’s this good in the future.

Involving yet forgiving chassis

The other half of the ATS-V’s fun-to-drive equation is the way that it keeps its flypaperlike Pirelli Super Sport tires on the road. For all its race-track capability, it’s hugely approachable on the road. Power out of a turn on a damp, cold afternoon, for instance, and the rear end will slither and wriggle, not snap. It makes for a performance car that can actually be used aggressively on the road. And the adaptive suspension is remarkably not-punishing on crummy roads, despite squelching body roll when driven hard.

Much praise must also go to the electronic differential and Cadillac’s clever traction control, which doles out horsepower in the perfect quantity on the road. It allows for injudicious applications of turbo boost with an ease not possible in, say, the twitchy and nervous M4. For track use, there are also five specific «Performance Traction Management» modes, as well as electronic launch control and a no-lift shifting feature.

Perhaps the best bit of the ATS-V driving experience is its just-right steering setup. The ratio is quick, but it’s not so sharp as to be twitchy off-center. And unlike many rivals, you get a novel’s worth of feedback through the leather-wrapped rim. That’ll pay dividends on a road course, sure, but it’s essential to upping the engagement factory of more quotidian street drives.

Above all, Cadillac’s sporty coupe looks the business, too, with flared fenders, a gaping grille aperture, big exhaust outlets and a big V-shaped spoiler atop the trunk lid. With optional black wheels and bronze brake calipers contrasting against the new Wave Metallic blue paint, this ATS-V screams aggression from every angle. Likewise inside, suede, Alcantara, carbon fiber and Recaro seats dress up the cabin. Those racy bits help distract from some of the less-expensive and dull plastics that are dotted throughout the car’s interior.

How you should configure it

Expect to pay between $595 and $1,225 if you want a color that isn’t black. An additional $2,000 from from the base model gets you the luxury package, which adds split-folding seats, upgraded infotainment, Bose Centerpoint audio and a power outlet.

You should add $600 for dark-finish wheels to help make your ATS-V visually distinct from the lower-trim ATS models on dealer lots. $2,000 more gets you the automatic transmission, which is probably what most buyers want in the premium sports sedan market.

The awesome Recaro performance seats seem worth the $2,300 up-charge, especially if you drive like me. There are driver aids on offer, too, but none of them felt particularly advanced or necessary so hold off on those.

All in, that puts the price somewhere between $68,990 and $70,215, depending on what color you pick.

Интерьер Кадиллак АТС

Внутреннее убранство автомобиля довольно оригинально с точки зрения дизайнеров и великолепно скомпоновано. Панель спереди смотрится роскошно и в то же время немного «космически» благодаря 8-ми дюйм.монитору информационно-развлекательной системы и нестандартно оформленных блоков климатической системы и музыки, которые управляются с помощью сенсоров. Также стоит отметить прекрасно вписавшееся в интерьер комфортное многофункциональное рулевое колесо и отлично скомпонованные устройства.

Отделочные материалы внутреннего убранства – либо искусственная, либо настоящая кожа, а также алюминиевые либо карбоновые детали и натуральное дерево. Передние сиденья Кадиллак АТС выглядят неплохо, с хорошим профилем и имеют большое количество различных регулировок, также боковую поддержку и регулируемые подголовники. На заднем диване много свободного места для удобной посадки взрослых людей, и сами кресла с комфортным профилем.

В оснащение входят такие опции: АБС с BrakeAssist, также в «базу» включается дифференциал высокого трения, пуск мотора на автомате, электронная структура стабилизации устойчивости по курсу, структура адаптивных биксеноновых фонарей. Также 2-х зонная климатическая система, структура мониторинга полосы движения и «мертвых» зон и структура, предупреждающая о лобовом столкновении.

В качестве функционала также входит: штатная навигационная система, система аудио Bose, в которую включены десять динамиков и самые разнообразные структуры безопасности и 17-ти дюйм.диски из легких сплавов.

Тест-драйв Cadillac ATS

Как ведет себя эта машина на ходу? Нужно сказать, что характеристики подвески подстроены почти идеально. В режиме «комфорт» машина отлично сглатывает все неровности. В спортивном режиме «Кадиллак» становится более собранным и сбитым, способным без кренов входить в повороты. Тормоза у седана отличные. Уже в базовой комплектации здесь стоят дисковые вентилируемые механизмы на обеих осях, а суппорта идут от компании «Брембо». Рулевое управление – рейка ZF с электромеханическим усилителем. На скорости меняется передаточное отношение. Так, руль становится более твердым и машину не бросает на трассе. Она четко держит прямолинейную траекторию. Также руль отзывчив на любые повороты. Машина моментально перестраивается в другую полосу, без каких-либо раскачек. Подобными характеристиками не могут похвастаться большинство американских седанов данного класса (слишком валкие).

Экстерьер Cadillac ATS

Внешний облик этого автомобиля завораживает – благодаря изысканному и по-штатовски наглому экстерьеру машина не похожа ни на 1-го из оппонентов. Автомобиль выглядит великолепно, подтянуто и массивно с любой стороны, а все части в его облике принимаются как должное. На передней части 4-х дверного седана можно увидеть оригинальную оптику со светодиодными полосами, которые также обрамляют воздухозаборник на мощном бампере и решетку радиатора.

Боковой вид показывает обтекаемую крышу, оригинальный дизайн колесных дисков и ребра, проходящие снизу дверей. Задняя часть смотрится спортивно благодаря зауженной вертикальной оптике, а также мощный бампер с двумя патрубками выхлопной системы. Вопреки традиционной угловатости многих моделей, внешность автомобиля выглядит строго и в то же время динамично.

Ходовая часть

Автомобиль построен на универсальной платформе «Дженерал Моторс Альфа». Кузов изготовлен из высокопрочных и многофазных сталей с добавками магния и алюминия. Что примечательно, машина отличается околоидеальной развесовкой. На переднюю ось приходится 51 процент массы, на заднюю – 49. Спереди установлена независимая подвеска со стойками «МакФерсон». Сзади применена многорычажная конструкция. С каждой стороны по пять рычагов. В качестве опции машина может оснащаться адаптивной подвеской с электронноуправляемыми амортизаторами. Так, водитель в состоянии выбрать разные настройки подвески – «спорт» и «комфорт».

В люксовых версиях машина идет с полным приводом. Он реализуется посредством многодисковой муфты «Халдекс» пятого поколения. Муфта находится перед задним дифференциалом. Крутящий момент может передаваться на переднюю ось в пропорции от 10 до 100 процентов.

Meaty acceleration

That powerful engine helps define the ATS-V’s aggressive character. Like most of its rivals, the Cadillac uses a six-cylinder mill augmented by a pair of turbochargers, in this case a V6 displacing 3.6 liters. Cadillac says the car gets to 60 miles per hour in 3.8 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 189 mph. Those figures are right on par with the likes of the
Audi
RS5 (3.7 seconds, thanks in part to all-wheel drive),
BMW M4
manual (4.1 seconds) and Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe (3.8 seconds). A claimed top speed of 189 miles per hour makes the Cadillac faster than all those cars.

While it lacks the meaty burble of the C63’s V8, the Caddy’s engine still makes great noises, purring around town and clamoring ever louder as revs build. It’s effortlessly responsive, with right-now power in any gear.

The whole experience is made even better by the six-speed manual transmission — and not only because this is one of just two cars in its class offered with a shift-it-yourself arrangement. The shift action is direct and just weighty enough to satisfy without being a chore in traffic. An automatic rev-match function is available at the push of a steering-wheel paddle, but really, the gearbox and pedals are so well arrayed for sporty driving that you’ll want to do all the engine-blipping yourself.

The twin-turbo V6 engine produces gobs of power, though it uses a lot of fuel to do so.
