Driving the Honda Pilot
Previous Pilots have always driven fine. Not quite refined enough to feel like an entry-level luxury car, but not too basic that it felt like an economy car. Most importantly, the 3.5-liter V6 has always been solid. The 2023 is more or less the same. It doesn’t quite ride like an Acura MDX, but it is much more refined than its predecessor. It’s considerably quieter, softer at the wheel, and behaves with more composure through city streets and highways. The suspension tuning makes a big difference in the new model, absorbing big potholes without sending a shudder through the cabin despite the 20-inch wheels.
The steering, I gotta say, is fantastic. The amount of feedback it provides to the driver is slightly more than you’d expect in a three-row SUV, but it’s not so much that it becomes tiring. It’s not as sporty as that of a Mazda CX-9, but lightyears ahead of what you’d find in a Ford Explorer or Toyota Highlander. Driving through mountain roads around Sedona, Arizona can be intimidating, especially after an overnight snowfall made roads slippery in the early hours of my test drive. The Pilot kept its composure as it made its way through tight bends and mud-splashed roads. The newly-tuned i-VTM4 all-wheel-drive system can send up to 70% of the torque to the rear, and 100% of that to either the right or left wheel. It can also do so 30% faster than the outgoing Pilot. I could certainly feel it working overtime to make sure I stayed planted on the road and off the sticky red mud the area is famous for.
Brake rotors have grown in size, too—by a not-insignificant 1.2 inches—now measuring 13.8 inches up front and 13 inches in the rear. Honda claims this has improved braking performance by 25%, and while I can’t really measure whether that’s true or not, I do know that braking felt solid and stable despite the cold, drizzly conditions. The new 10-speed automatic transmission was perhaps the only aspect of the Pilot that I want to get to know more about. It didn’t immediately stand out as anything special, but perhaps that’s a positive. I’d rather experience it in daily traffic or while backing in and out of grocery store parking lots than on mountain switchbacks before passing judgment.
As you’d expect in a Pilot by now, the cabin is ergonomic and easy to use, with buttons positioned in places where they make sense. And unlike the Hyundai Tucson I recently tested, this one has an actual volume knob built into its infotainment setup. Hallelujah! The redesigned front seats are phenomenally comfortable, though lack the kind of lateral support that keeps the torso from swaying from side to side on twisty backroads.
2023 Honda Pilot Hybrid
In 2020, we saw the test mule with the opening above the front wheel. This started rumors about the Pilot PHEV version. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic made the Japanese company pause the development. So, this is one of the first indications of what to expect from the 2023 Honda Pilot. In the mid-size SUV segment, we can already find hybrid versions of the Toyota Highlander and Ford Explorer. Jeep Wrangler PHEV is also one of the hot models we expect to see soon. Honda will have to join the race. Also, this is the next step towards complete electrification.
PHEV model was spied for the first time in 2019
First impressions
TrailSport is a mid-level trim and packs off-road wheels, Continental Terrain Contact all-terrain tires, steel skid plates, full-size spare wheel, recovery hooks, and an off-road suspension. There are seven drive modes, including a new ‘Trail’ mode. Engaging the Trail mode enables a new feature called ‘Trail Watch’ that shows a live feed from the front and side cameras on the touchscreen infotainment system.
It’s not possible to disengage the Pilot TrailSport’s stabilizer bars completely, although Honda has optimized it for greater articulation and comfort. The ride on off-road trails is reportedly pretty comfortable, thanks to the specially tuned suspension. In the case of wheelspin at the front, the brake-based torque vectoring system presses into action instantly. The AWD system is more advanced and allows directing 75% of the torque to the rear wheel with more traction and is quite responsive.
Pilot 101
After looking more or less the same for six years, the Pilot has finally been completely redesigned inside and out for 2023. In fact, even the platform it rides on is brand new. The design language is similar to that of the new Honda CR-V that launched last year, with a towering hood, large grille, sleek headlights, and a stronger beltline that gives the Pilot a more powerful stance. Overall, the three-row SUV is much more athletic-looking than its rounder predecessor. It’s also 3.4 inches longer, over an inch wider, and an inch taller.
Inside is where you’ll really feel the difference, however. The dated-looking interior of the third-gen is gone and the Pilot now steps into 2023 with fresh lines, new tech, and a more thoughtful and family-friendly cabin. Yes, like with most cars nowadays, there are larger, better, sharper screens, more buttons for more features, and a digital gauge cluster than can show you a gazillion bits of information. But that’s not really what matters here.
What truly matters is the redesigned seating for eight, nifty door cards with floating armrests that allow for more and bigger cupholders (there are 14 of them!), a console tray that can hold two smartphones, the easily accessible charging outlets, and, my favorite, the removable second-row middle seat. Weighing around 25 pounds, it can be removed and stashed in the underfloor of the trunk so it’s ready to be re-installed at a moment’s notice—no more having to leave it back home in the garage. It’s almost as convenient as Chrysler’s Stow ‘N Go.
New for 2023 is also a Trailsport trim, which unlike before, packs much more than just visual enhancements. The new Pilot Trailsport features a one-inch suspension lift, off-road-tuned stabilizer bars, all-terrain tires, heavy-duty skid plates, additional camera views, and off-road-specific driving modes in addition to trim-specific paint colors and body styling. We’ve reviewed the Trailsport separately and you can read about it here.
Pilot?
2023 Honda Pilot Redesign
The current generation of Honda’s biggest SUV has been around since 2016. Even though it still marks some pretty good sales numbers, it’s time for updates. The competition is getting stronger and that’s why the Japanese manufacturer is working on a completely new model, which is about to debut sometime in the next year.
The 2023 Honda Pilot is expected to bring a lot of novelties. From what we know so far, many parts will be shared with the new Acura MDX. This includes the platform, mechanics and lots of other stuff. The two models always shared a wheelbase, so we may expect the same in the future. That means that the 2023 Honda Pilot would gain 2.8 inches between the axles, which would provide more passenger space and more interior room in a generation.
At this point, the new generation still wears camouflage. From what we can see, the overall contour won’t change drastically. On the other hand, we expect to see completely new aesthetics. The biggest changes should happen at the front, where we count on a more rugged appearance. We count on a lot of inspiration taken from the updated Ridgeline. Naturally, there is also plenty of room for exclusive details, which would accentuate the model’s flagship position in the lineup. Still, radical styling changes definitely won’t occur.

Interior
Of course, the interior design will be all new as well. At this point, it’s still early to talk about details but we presume that the company will tend to make the 2023 Honda Pilot’s cabin a little bit flashier. The current one features very good quality but doesn’t stand out in terms of aesthetics. Therefore, we expect that Honda engineers will pay more attention to details and make the cabin look flashier.
Besides improved quality and aesthetics, we also count on lots of new tech features. This would include a new infotainment system, with a bigger screen, more connectivity options, including smartphone integration. Of course, more advanced safety and driver-assistance features are also expected.
As we already mentioned, the new model will feature a slightly longer wheelbase and probably a bigger overall size. That means we should expect more space on the inside as well. The current model already offers plenty of space, so we presume that the focus would be on the third row, which should become more adult-friendly. The same story is with cargo space. The current generation is already among class leaders, so we don’t expect drastic increase in this aspect.
How It Stacks Against the Competition
Like with most cars, features and equipment can vary drastically from one Pilot trim to another. The model I drove was the range-topping Elite model, meaning it came equipped with every option Honda offers. A configurable 10.2-inch display, color head-up display, a multi-view camera, heated seats, heated steering wheel, three-row panoramic sunroof, removable second-row middle seat, a nine-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 12-speaker Bose sound system, just to give you some highlights.
Key standard features across the entire Pilot lineup include a seven-inch touchscreen (nine on Touring and Elite), new-generation front airbags, new side airbags, Honda Sensing with wide-view camera and radar, hill descent control, blind-spot monitoring with increased range (82 feet), traffic jam assist, sign recognition and a rear seat reminder that warns drivers that they may be about to leave precious passengers or cargo in the rear seats.
The Toyota Highlander is one of the Pilot’s biggest competitors, right up there with the Kia Telluride, Chevrolet Traverse, Hyundai Palisade, and Subaru Ascent. All of these offer third-row seating and start in the mid-$30,000s and can hit $50,000 when fully loaded.

2023 Honda Pilot Transmission, and Performance
Like the 2022 Pilot, the all-new 2023 model comes with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine. However, this new generation of SUVs, produces 285 horsepower, an increase of 5 hp from last year.
The 2023 Pilot has ditched the old nine-speed automatic transmission for a new 10-speed unit, although the SUV remains a front-wheel drive-based model with all-wheel drive available as an option. While the updated V-6 engine doesn’t make the Pilot feel any quicker than the previous generation model, throttle response is improved and the 10-speed automatic shifts nice and smooth.
Road enhancements are also enhanced for the 2022 model, with more confident steering and braking. Trailsport’s most rugged model proved capable of handling some of the toughest terrains we encountered on real-world off-road trails near Breckenridge, Colorado, and again in Sedona, Arizona.
But Honda has yet to create the rock-cruising super engine meant to tackle Moab alongside Broncos, Wranglers, and 4Runners. The Trailsport Pilot features a custom suspension with a 1.0-inch lift, steel skid plates, all-terrain tires, a downhill control system, and a specially tuned all-wheel drive system with Trail driving mode.
One Of The Best 3 Row SUV Interiors On The Market
via Hondaa
It is not easy to find a 3 row SUV that has jaw-dropping interior features. The current 2021 Honda Pilot has one of the best interiors in terms of an SUV car. We are hoping that not much will change with the new 2023 model. The new 2022 model interior will probably get a slightly better, refreshed interior look that has an updated infotainment unit.
The 2023 model will hopefully provide more convenient features and refreshed materials. There is also a high chance that there will be more space in the car because of the rumor that the car is going to increase its dimensions.
In terms of the exterior of the car, The 2023 Pilot has been spotted, and it looks like changes have been made in the profile of the car. It looks a lot like the Ridgeline as we stated earlier on. There’s more distance between the base of the A-pillar and the front wheels. The roof-line appears to slope down more toward the back, and the hatch isn’t nearly as upright. The car looks longer than the 2021 model and seems to have a flatter roof. A flatter roof will make it easier for you to tie things to your roof racks, such as your bikes or some extra storage space for your vacations.
All in all, the outside of the car looks like it has been refreshed, which is what the car needed. One of the biggest rumors doing the rounds is that there will be an addition of new colors to the 2023 Honda Pilot palette options. This is an exciting rumor because it means that you will get more choices other than the black, white, and neutral colors.
What’s New for the 2023 Honda Pilot?
Honda is always trying to keep its vehicle modern. Designers are always after interesting ideas. For example, the new model for 2021 brought the Special Edition. Also, the company included a unique shade of white color for the Black Edition(?!).
Heavily camouflaged test mules were caught several times. However, none of the previous versions of Pilot SUV haven’t brought major changes. Well, we might have been tricked with the Passport, a slightly smaller SUV with the same styling like Pilot. But now, it is definitely time for big updates, in and out.
Again, prototypes were on the streets, but the last spy photos are pretty old. It seems like the company paused the development of the vehicle due to the coronavirus. That makes us thinking of the 2023 Honda Pilot, rather than the 2022 YM. The redesign is certain, although the SUV had two minor facelifts, in 2017 and 2019.
Predictions for the 2023 Honda Pilot
Critics are anticipating the 2023 Honda Pilot to adopt a squared-off profile, similar to the company’s Ridgeline model, which was redesigned in 2021. The rugged exterior will shift away from the outdated high-riding, minivan-like design, as described by Kelley Blue Book.
The roof line will slope down toward the rear of the vehicle where the back hatch is less upright. The flatter roof will allow for easier tie-downs of equipment. Elongated, with more distance between the base of the A-pillar and the front wheels, signifies larger dimensions for the 2023 Honda Pilot. Rumored additional color options complete the SUV’s necessary modern exterior refresh.
Meanwhile, the already well-equipped and luxurious interior will most likely get a refreshed infotainment system. Reviewers are hopeful for more convenience-based standard features. Due to the longer wheelbase, extra legroom for the second and third-row seating is probable.
The 2023 Honda Pilot is expected to have the latest in safety technology. This includes tire pressure monitoring, LED daytime running lights, lane departure warning, and a collision mitigation braking system. Advanced driver assistance aid is a potential.
The vehicle’s fuel economy should be improved in order to maintain its competitive advantage. A plug-in hybrid model should be making a future appearance.

Interior
The interior of the 2024 Honda Pilot continues embodying the design philosophy that debuted in the new Civic – Simplicity and Something. It has a clean interior styling with a slimmer and simplified dashboard that frees the cabin of visual clutter. It’s roomier than the third-gen model, offering 2.4 in. more legroom in the second row and 0.6 in. more legroom in the third row.

The steering wheel and the center console have a neat design and are in line with the minimalist theme of the interior. A configurable 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make the midsize SUV attractive for tech-savvy customers.
Honda Pilot 2023

2023 Honda Pilot Redesign
We expect a lot of changes to come with this redesign. At this point, the Japanese company tries to keep details about the new model a secret, but some things are pretty easy to predict. Of course, one of them is the platform, which will be shared with the recently-redesigned Acura MDX. The two models will once again ride on the same chassis and there is no doubt that the new model will benefit a lot in terms of the ride quality.
Of course, some of the biggest changes will come in terms of suspension setup. The current model is very comfortable but we expect that the new model will bring a bit of athleticism to the table. Once again, base models will come with front-wheel drive, while the all-wheel-drive will be offered as an option.
Exterior Design
The test model has been spotted on the road and even though it still wears complete camouflage, some things are easy to see. The new generation seems to feature a more rugged styling and bigger dimensions. That’s not a surprise if we consider that the new Acura MDX came with 2.8 inches more in wheelbase than before. The 2023 Honda Pilot will come with the same increase, while we expect growth in other dimensions as well.
Naturally, we count on the new styling as well. At this point, it’s hard to talk about specifics but we presume that Honda is about to implement the latest design language, which will characterize other models in the lineup as well, starting from the company’s best-seller, the CR-V. More details will be known once the test model takes a bit of its cover. That should happen in the next few months.
Interior
The 2023 Honda Pilot interior will also come completely new. First of all, we count on a new dashboard design. The current model looks nice and features very good build quality. However, younger rivals look fancier, so we may presume that Honda will go in the same direction. This means we are about to see more attractive aesthetics, more tech features and even nicer materials.
On the other hand, the overall layout won’t change significantly, though the longer wheelbase will definitely bring benefits in terms of the passenger space. Of course, three rows of seats will be standard, while we have no doubt that the new model will also feature tremendous cargo volume. For reference, the current model is good for about 18.5 cubic feet behind the third row, 55.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 109.2 cubic feet of the total cargo volume. That’s impressive for a mid-size SUV.
2023 Honda Pilot Engines
Unlike the rest of the vehicle, this aspect won’t bring too many changes. The 2023 Honda Pilot will continue with the well-known 3.5-liter V6, which will feature a max output of 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. The engine will come coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission and we have no doubt that this setup will provide more than satisfying performance. Also, we presume that mpg ratings will be pretty similar to the outgoing generation, which would mean around 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
Also, there is a chance to see a plug-in hybrid version one day. At this point, the officials are still quiet about this powertrain and we are pretty sure that we will have to wait for another year or two to see such a model in Honda’s portfolio.
