The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the 2023 Hyundai Kona a five-star overall rating. The model also earns a slate of “Good” ratings in all crash testing categories from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but doesn’t get a Top Safety Pick rating.
Hyundai’s large suite of standard active safety features grows even longer this year as blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts and safe exit warnings become standard on all trims. They join forward automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane following assist with lane keep assist and a driver attention monitor. The automaker uses its own labels for many of these systems, but the array is comprehensive, and some of these items cost extra or aren’t available at all on certain competing vehicles.
Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go was optional on the N-Line last year but is now reserved for the Limited and standard on that trim. Kona Limiteds also get Hyundai’s Highway Driving Assist system, a Level 2 semi-autonomous system that uses GPS data to inform the vehicle on limited-access highways.
This isn’t a great back seat for tall people, but kids probably won’t mind and the Kona’s interior is handsome and functional. Alex Kwanten

Hyundai Kona Performance
2023 Hyundai Kona EV‘s all-new Kona crossover is a great option for those looking for a small, efficient and affordable vehicle. The Kona is available in both front- and all-wheel drive, and with two different engine options, there’s a perfect Kona for everyone. The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produces 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, providing plenty of power for getting around town or on the highway. Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go
Standard on Limited trim. While traveling at a speed set by you, it uses radar to help maintain a safe distance from the car ahead. After the system slows the vehicle to a stop, it will reactivate if the vehicle in front moves within 3 seconds.

Smart Cruise Control (SCC) is not a collision avoidance or warning device. SCC is for highway use only and should not be used in poor weather, heavy or varying traffic, or on winding or slippery roads. Fuel Economy: 14/15
Both Kona engines, in front-wheel drive models, return an EPA-estimate 32 mpg combined and 35 mpg highway, but the 1.6-liter turbo does slightly worse around town, 29 mpg city to the 2.0’s 30. In our real-world testing of the 2.0 we came closer to 30 mpg and in the 1.6 liter turbo, about 27 mpg. Both versions take regular gas, and while these numbers aren’t the best in class as returned by the Kicks and Corolla Cross, the Kona is just nicer to drive than those two vehicles, even with the base engine.
AWD Konas drop to 30 mpg combined with the 2.0 (28 city, 33 highway) and 29 mpg combined with the turbo (27 city, 32 highway). The Soul, Seltos and Taos return fuel economy that’s only 1 or 2 mpg shy of the Kona, as does the non-turbo CX-30. The Renegade and Mitsubishi Outlander Sport fall 3 to 5 mpg further back.
Is it Practical and Spacious?
When it comes to sheer size and practicality, the Hyundai Kona — like all of its rivals in the compact SUV market — won’t meet everyone’s needs. From the outset, it’s important to note that the Kona’s platform doesn’t offer the space that a midsize platform does, and as a result, it’s more suited to small families that don’t require too much from the rear seats.
Once you’re looking at it through the appropriate lens, though, the Kona begins to shine as a fun-loving and somewhat practical compact SUV in some key areas.
The driving position is familiar to that of the i30 hatchback, meaning there’s a comfortable set of seats benefiting from an ergonomic cabin design, with the benefit of added ride height that offers some more visibility over the road than the hatch it’s based on. The cabin feels somewhat narrow, but overall there’s a heap of adjustment in the driving position, adequate shoulder room and even head room for even the tallest of drivers.
Practical elements in the front of the cabin include a pair of cup holders, a two-tiered storage area behind the gear lever with a pad for your smartphone, storage inside the compact folding armrest and some sizable door bins either side.
All up, the front of the cabin is a great place for a couple to commute or enjoy a weekend adventure, however, things go south when you move to the rear of the cabin.
The Kona’s second row of seats can, in theory, accommodate adults, but the clear lack of head and legroom means this is only an option for extremely short journeys. Kids up to their early teenage years will be perfectly happy in the second row, which also features a pair of ISOFIX anchors for child seats.
In terms of boot space, the Hyundai Kona has a boot rated at 374L, which expands to 1,156L with the rear-seats folded down. In the real world, this translates to a pair of suitcases, or a large supermarket run in the boot, with the added ability to squeeze long, bulky objects thanks to the flat-folding seats.
Safety
Hyundai hasn’t introduced safety-related changes to the Kona Electric for the 2023 model year. The EV grew safer in MY2022 due to improvements in the driver assistance systems department. In the last update, Hyundai had introduced four new features: Highway Driving Assist, Lane Following Assist, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Moreover, the company made Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection standard. Both Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist became capable of applying brakes in addition to giving a warning.
What Features Does the Hyundai Kona Have?
The entry-level Kona 2.0 comes fitted with a set of 16-inch alloys, LED daytime running lamps, automatic headlights, an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Qi wireless smartphone charging, six-speaker sound system, air conditioning, adaptive cruise control system, tyre pressure monitoring, reversing camera and a 4.2-inch digital instrument cluster that displays trip information and economy figures.
Moving to the Kona 2.0 Active adds a set of 17-inch alloys, as well as a number of interior improvements like leather upholstery, a leather steering wheel and gear lever, power-folding mirrors, rear parking sensors, rear privacy glass and fold-down armrest in the rear of the cabin.
The 2.0 Elite Kona variant adds a larger 10.25-inch infotainment system with DAB+ radio and satellite navigation, climate control, fog lights, automatic wipers, keyless entry and start, upgraded Harman Kardon sound system, as well as some safety features like blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alerts.
Moving to the Kona Highlander variant adds a set of LED head and tail lights, a 10.25-inch digital driving display, panoramic sunroof, 18-inch alloys, heads-up display, front parking sensors, 10-way adjustable seats with lumbar support, ambient lighting, heated and ventilated seats, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel.
Finally, Hyundai’s flagship Kona, the N Line Premium gets a more powerful 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, multi-link sports suspension for the rear wheels, all-wheel drive system, as well as receiving the same features as the Highlander, with a two-tone roof replacing the sunroof.
Design and interior
Hyundai has promised a line of electric cars based on a dedicated platform, but for now, the Kona Electric shares its underpinnings with gasoline models. That means it has largely the same exterior styling as gasoline Kona models, with stacked headlights and daytime running lights, plastic body cladding, and a shape that’s somewhere between an SUV and a conventional hatchback. Gasoline or electric, the Kona looks like nothing else on the road.
Electric models are distinguished by a blanked-off grille (which also houses the charge port) and model-specific wheels that, Hyundai says, optimize aerodynamic efficiency. Styling tweaks for the 2022 model year include functional front-bumper vents, reworked lighting, and a new rear bumper. The changes are fairly subtle, however.
The interior is virtually identical to the gasoline Kona’s. The main difference is a set of buttons that replace the gasoline model’s shift lever. The interior design is clean and functional, with a handy storage tray below the center console. The only downside was material quality. Nearly everything was plain black plastic, and while that would be fine at the price point of a basic gasoline Kona, it didn’t seem appropriate given our test car’s roughly $43,000 MSRP.
Gasoline or electric, the Kona looks like nothing else on the road.
The Kona Electric has slightly less rear headroom and legroom than the already-cramped gasoline Kona. This vehicle’s tiny size and fairly low seating position don’t feel particularly SUV-like, but passenger space is similar to rival EVs. The Kia Niro EV and Chevrolet Bolt EV/EUV offer similar headroom, although the Chevys offer more legroom in both rows. The Volkswagen ID.4 offers more front and rear headroom, and more rear-seat legroom, but long-legged drivers won’t notice much of a difference.
At 19.2 cubic feet with the rear seats in place, and 45.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, cargo space is identical to gasoline Kona models. With its rear seats up, the Hyundai offers more cargo space than the Kia Niro EV and Chevy Bolt EV/EUV, but loses that advantage when you fold the rear seats. Conversely, the Nissan Leaf has more cargo space with its rear seats up, but less with the rear seats folded. Only the VW ID.4 offers more cargo space in both cases.

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) will not work under all circumstances. It operates above 40 mph and only when it is able to detect painted lane markings. It cannot function if the lane markings cannot be seen clearly. If the lines cannot be seen clearly due to poor road conditions, weather, or lighting conditions, it may not function. It also may not function on very rough roads, when walls, curbs or concrete barriers are close by, or if following another car too closely. Since it «sees» the lane markings using a camera in the upper windshield area, it is imperative this area be clear and free of blockage such as stickers, dirt, snow, tinting material, markings and labels. Lane Keeping Assist is not a substitute for safe driving practices, but is a supplemental assist only. The driver is responsible for always maintaining command and control of the vehicle and must keep hands on the wheel at all times. See Owner’s Manual for further details and limitations.
