Starting at just $40,200, the IS300 comes standard with 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, dual-zone automatic climate control, faux-leather upholstery, and an 8-inch infotainment system. Pricing & Availability

The 2022 Lexus IS 500 F SPORT Performance is expected at dealerships later this fall. Lexus says pricing information, exterior, and interior color choices, and other optional features will be announced closer to that time.

It’s also worth noting how the forthcoming IS 500 is the first in what will become a new F SPORT Performance line. That said, it will be exciting to see where Lexus takes this new performance-inspired theme in the next few years.

Engine & Powertrain Specs

Under that raised hood is a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8 that cranks out 472 horsepower (7,100 rpm) and 395 lb-ft. of torque (4,800 rpm). The 5.0-liter plant is quite a jump from the top engine in the 2021 Lexus IS lineup, a 3.5-liter V6 with 311 horsepower and 280 lb-ft. of torque. Despite the larger engine, the 2022 Lexus IS 500 F SPORT Performance is only 143 lbs. heavier in terms of curb weight versus the current IS 350 F SPORT with the V6. Lexus lists the weight of the IS 500 F SPORT Performance at 3,891 lbs.

According to Lexus, the zero to 60 time of the IS 500 F Sport Performance is 4.5 seconds. Lexus also estimates the highway fuel economy at 24 mpg.

Attached to the 5.0-liter engine is the same eight-speed automatic found in the current IS 300 and IS 350 RWD. The Sport S and Sport S+ modes enhance performance by changing different vehicle systems accordingly (engine, transmission, steering assist, and damping force). Meanwhile, the Custom Mode offers different combos for the powertrain (Normal, Eco, and Power), chassis (Normal or Sport), and air conditioner (Normal or Eco).

The standard Dynamic Handling Package adds fun goodies like an Adaptive Variable Suspension and a Torsen limited-slip differential. Braking upgrades for the IS 500 F SPORT Performance include additional aerodynamic cooling measures and larger, 14-inch two-piece aluminum front rotors and 12.7-inch rear rotors.

When IS arrived in the US in 2001, it tried to get the Series 3 out of the Series 3, delivering sporty rear-drive dynamics in a compact sedan package with Lexus luxury and reliability. That’s the formula ISIS has followed since then.

After extensive updates for the 2021 model year, expect the sports sedan to remain largely unchanged until 2022 except for the muscular IS500 F Sport Performance model.

Here’s what we know about the car, and what you can expect from the rest of the Lexus IS 2022 lineup.

The top-of-the-line IS500 F Sport Performance model joins the lineup for 2022 and offers a 472 hp 5.0-liter V-8 engine and elements of a more aggressive exterior styling.

2022 Lexus IS 350 Engine

You will find plastic-type handles on the hood. The standard 3.5-liter V-6 is hidden under the hood. This engine has been used for many years to drive other Lexus products. The normally aspirated engine produces 306 horsepower and 277 lb-ft. So you will get a lot of torque. Bump up to the IS350 and you’ll get a 3.5-liter V6 that churns out 311-hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. Like the IS300, it can be had in rear or AWD configurations but unlike the IS300, the IS350 uses a six-speed automatic.

Finally, the IS500 comes with a 472-hp 5.0-liter V8 with 395 lb-ft of torque. Much like the IS300, it uses an eight-speed automatic but in this case, AWD is not available. That’s ok though because the charm of the V8 is that you can have even more fun behind the wheel. All-wheel-drive might nerf that opportunity.

Lexus IS 300 AWD 2022

The 2.0-liter engine is updated for 2021, featuring adaptive transmission control that helps determine the most appropriate gear for each driving situation based on driver input to achieve a linear response.

This engine is rated excellent for producing 241 horsepower, the rugged four-cylinder also produces a solid 258 lb-ft of torque in a flat torque range from 1,650 rpm to 4,400 rpm.

The output of this engine is not only powerful but also efficient which is supported by an advanced Intelligent Wide Variable Valve Timing (VVTi-W) system that allows the engine to switch between Otto and Atkinson combustion cycles to maximize efficiency. It is equipped with an eight-speed Sport Direct Shift (SPDS) automatic transmission.

For added traction in cold weather climates the 2022 Lexus IS 300 AWD Sedan is also available with all-wheel drive. The IS 300 AWD is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 260 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.

The electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system is designed to help improve traction and grip by automatically varying front-to-rear torque distribution.

On a dry road, the 2022 Lexus IS 300 AWD maintains a 30:70 front-to-rear torque distribution for maximum performance but is capable of delivering as much as 50% power to the front wheels under certain conditions.

For buyers who crave maximum power, there’s the IS 350 in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 311 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of peak torque.

The rear-wheel-drive model uses the same eight-speed Sport Direct Shift automatic transmission found on the IS 300 RWD, while the AWD version sends power via a six-speed automatic transmission.

If you have questions about the performance properties of each vehicle, just look at their 0-60 times, as the IS 350 RWD covers the ground in 5.6 seconds while the IS 350 AWD goes from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds.

The Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance 2022 revives the dormant IS F formula, bringing V8 power back to the compact luxury Japanese sports sedan for the first time since 2014 and confirming rumors of a new series of V8 (small p) powered performance cars from Lexus.

The hood of the IS 500 F SPORT Performance is raised by nearly two inches versus the standard IS. Similarly, the front and rear bumpers are elongated to give the F SPORT Performance a more muscular stance. The 19-inch, split-10-spoke Enkei alloy wheels further accentuate that muscular stance. 2022 Lexus IS Price

While we were most attracted to the high-performance IS500 model, we haven’t had the chance to test it out yet. Meanwhile, we recommend the mid-range IS350 F Sport with rear-wheel drive. The F Sport package not only offers a more aggressive exterior styling but is also equipped with unique 19-inch wheels with larger rear tires, a cool air intake system, a limited-slip rear differential, F Sport exhaust, and heated and ventilated sport seats. We also chose the Dynamic Handling package, which includes an adaptive suspension system.

2022 Lexus IS Tech

Like the 2021 model, 2022 IS should offer two infotainment display options: a standard 8.0-inch unit, and a 10.3-inch increment. Both are touch screens, but can also be controlled by the touchpad on the center console.

Standard connectivity features will likely include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth streaming, and two front-line USB ports. As before, there should be a reconfigurable gauge cluster display that can show the information and layout of the tachometer that changes depending on the driving mode.

Mark Levinson’s 17-speaker premium audio system will likely be offered as an upgrade from the standard setup.
