О машине – Mazda RX-7 Turbo II

Машина, появившаяся в продаже в 1985 году, создавалась на волне успеха предыдущей RX-7 (SA22C/FC), которая отлично продавалась и была любима прессой и энтузиастами. Задача, стоявшая перед главным инженером проекта Акио Учиямой, была уже даже не в том, чтобы превзойти удачную машину-предшественника, а перейти на новый уровень – дотянуться до технически совершенных Porsche 924/944 и, возможно, превзойти их за счет применения роторного двигателя.

Ощущения из 90-х

Забираясь внутрь любого спортивного автомобиля той эпохи, особенно после чего-то современного, вы почувствуете себя как в пещере, тут скромно и не очень приятно пахнет. Ведь даже во времена своего расцвета RX-7 имел репутацию грубого и очень простого автомобиля, и в наше время это ощущение усиливается в десять раз.

Когда пытаешься залезть в тонкое ковшеобразное сиденье, одного из автомобилей мечты детства, ударяешься головой о низкую, выпуклую крышу. Приходится отодвигать сиденье назад, на максимум, чтобы найти удобное сидячее положение. Кроме того, оно не регулируется по высоте, но как только вы пристегнулись, сидеть в нем в принципе удобно.

Салон RX-7 не намного просторнее нынешней Mazda MX-5, все черное, функциональное, без всякой ерунды и изобилует хрупким японским пластиком той эпохи. Руль невозможно отрегулировать, поэтому он располагается у вас на коленях, заставляя нажимать на педали, раскинув ноги по сторонам.Запускается роторный двигатель физическим ключом. Чтобы не ударить лицом в грязь, пришлось замахнуться на большее. Предок выступал в классе GTU (мотор до 3х литров), новую машину было решено выставлять в старший класс GTO. Кузов силуэта RX-7 GTO только внешне напоминал серийную машину, а в качестве силового агрегата разработали 600 сильный четырёхроторный двигатель 13J, развивающий 529 Нм момента.

В своём дебютном сезоне 1990 года команде удалось заработать 3 победы (включая 100ю для Р-Икс-7), а уже в 1991 Пит Халсмер стал Чемпионом серии IMSA GTO.

В 1994 году специально доподготовленная RX-7 GTO сражалась в ЛеМане в группе GTS, но заняла 2е место, проиграв своему вечному сопернику Nissan 300ZX и 15 место в абсолюте.

Характеристики

Конечно, Мазда РИкс-7 выглядит и управляется отменно, да и собрана она с должным качеством и, всё же, её главное отличие, которое с лёгкостью перекрывает другие характерные черты машины, находится у неё под капотом.

Это – роторный двигатель Ванкеля.

Трёхлопастной ротор двигается в зацеплении с зубчатым колесом статора по сложной траектории, позволяющей отсекать такты. 4 такта: впуск, сжатие, зажигание, выхлоп, умещаются в одном обороте ротора в отличие от двух оборотов, которые требуются для полного цикла коленвалу поршневого двигателя. Кроме того, в течение одного оборота 2 лопасти ротора совершают полезную работу, а у четырёхцилиндрового поршневого этим занят лишь 1 цилиндр.

Вот откуда взялись 6 цилиндров и 2600 см3 в технических данных вкладыша! Лопастей у ротора 3, объём пространства между лопастями и стенкой ~650 см3. 2 цилиндра одновременно в работе и 2 цикла за 2 оборота (а не 1 за 2) – умножаем 650 х 2 х 2 = 2600. А 6 цилиндров – это 3 лопасти, которые дважды работают за 2 оборота.

Логика кривая, но она есть. Особенно если сравнивать мощностные характеристики роторного мотора с поршневым.

Турбированный двигатель 13B-T, которому соответствуют данные вкладыша развивает 185 л.с. при 6500 об/мин и 248 Нм при 3500 об/мин. Такой же двигатель на машинах пятой серии (1989-1991) развивал уже 200 л.с.

The ultimate expression of Mazda’s rotary prowess

Yes, in a word—the last chapter in the RX-7 saga to date, the FD was also the best by far. Now transformed from a GT into a no-compromise sports car, the FD looks as timelessly modern today as it did when it was first shown to the world back in 1991. With a stunningly fluid design language that is all its own, this RX-7 didn’t even attempt to challenge the competition. It offered such a unique blend of style and performance that it was in its own niche from the start.

That doesn’t mean it deserted any of the original car’s concept of balance, precision, and efficiency in all areas. The cabin is still the same basic layout as the original FC car with, yes, the fixed steering column, just the instruments you need, and a manual gearbox/rear-drive drivetrain.

But it does mean the FD was seriously upgraded in every other area important to making the car go and handle more quickly. The twin-rotor 13B-REW rotary engine was now turbocharged by not one, but two turbos arranged in sequence specifically to boost low-end torque and top-end thrust. This boosted max power to 255 hp, which was on a par with similar-sized sports cars of the day. But the FD’s greatest strength was still its balance and lack of weight.

At just 2,850 lbs, this car was still significantly lighter, giving it performance figures and handling characteristics even the German factories envied. Tests done on the car around its launch claimed it was one of the best handling cars of all time—a fact that is still hard to deny today.

Slashing through the southern Californian canyons in this white car, you still thrill at its instant responses to all the controls. Sequences of corners are dispatched with mere flicks of the wrist and the subtlest changes in pedal pressures. The tactile three-spoke wheel telegraphs the car’s light and playful character, the almost spookily smooth engine softly sings its siren song.

This is a car at the very top of its game, a no-compromise sports machine for people who wanted that and nothing more. There are no buttons on the steering wheel, no unnecessary knobs or switches anywhere else. Just the distilled purity of an innovative machine designed for the passionate driving enthusiast. You could question what isn’t there, but you can only love what is.

How does the RX-7 FD’s 13B-REW Rotary Work?

The 13B has stood the test of time and is certainly one of the most incredible engines ever built. As it reinvented itself over the years, it eventually evolved into the much-loved 13B-REW, which was released in the FD in 1992. This immediately changed the game.

Gone were the valves, pistons and connecting rods of your everyday engine, and in its place was a spinning twin-turbocharged Dorito of destiny.

Originally designed by Felix Wankel back in 1951, this incredible feat of engineering has been given very little opportunity in the modern-day automotive world, but Mazda is determined to use it to its full potential.

You really do need to understand how a rotary works to appreciate just how truly amazing, yet simple it really is.

As you’ve probably guessed, explaining exactly how a rotary works is far easier in video than text, and Engineering Explained come to the rescue to explain everything you could possibly need to know about the RX-7 rotary.

So, you now hopefully understand that in a piston engine, the cylinder does four different jobs by handling the intake, compression, combustion and exhaust gases. Where the rotary is different is that it divides these into their own specific areas.

Think of it as a 4-cylinder engine, where each cylinder has its own specific task, with the piston continually moving between each cylinder. This is done within two spinning ‘Doritos’ (rotors) as opposed to the typical pistons and rod setup.

Rotary engines are capable of producing more power when compared to a relative piston-based engine due to combustion occurring twice as frequently. It’s incredibly smooth, and it’s also capable of spinning at far higher revolutions than a camshaft and valve setup.

This allows for a lightweight and extremely compact engine which is also capable of withstanding huge power to make for the ultimate package.

Mazda went on to continue using the rotary engine in their RX-8, and later featured in 2012 during Mazda2 testing, using the rotary technology as a range extender when combined with an electric setup.

Since then, patent drawings have also surfaced which prove that Mazda is still determined to continue with it, but little is known about their intentions. All we do know is that there is a small, hard-working team working at Mazda to ensure that they do their best to keep the rotary dream alive.

What To Know About The New Mazda RX7

Mazda’s newest vehicle, the RX7, has been making headlines lately, with many wondering if the new model will be powered by a rotary engine like the previous RX7 models were before they were discontinued in 2002.

Though Mazda has not confirmed whether or not this will be the case, there are many who believe that it’s true. Here’s what we know about the new Mazda RX7 and its potential rotary engine.

A Little Bit About The History of Mazda

The company started in 1920 as a producer of grinding equipment. In Hiroshima, Japan, there was a young man named Jujiro Matsuda who studied automotive engineering and eventually started working for Toyo Cork Kogyo.

The company would change its name several times over the next couple of decades (Matsuda Motor Company and Toyo Kogyo) before finally settling on Mazda Miata 1995. It wasn’t until 1991 that Mazda introduced its first-ever car produced outside of Japan.

Manufactured in South Africa by Delta Motors. When it came time to design a sports car, Mazda opted for an in-house solution over outsourced production again.

What Does The Word Mazda Mean?

The word Mazda is a transliteration of an Old Persian word meaning possessing free will. It’s also a play on Ahura Mazda, one of two deities in Zoroastrianism, a 6th-century B.C. religion that was widely practiced across much of Persia (modern Iran).

Mazda was called Ahura Mazda, meaning Wise Lord, while his brother was named Angra Mainyu (or Ahriman), which means Destructive Spirit.

In fact, Zoroastrianism is well known for its dualistic view of good versus evil, followers believe that all things are part of an eternal cosmic struggle between those forces.

Where is Mazda Originally From?

Mazda is actually a Japanese company. The name Mazda comes from Ahura Mazda, who was an omniscient, mythical figure in Zoroastrianism.

This is not particularly relevant to their cars, however, that doesn’t mean they aren’t American at heart.

For example, founder Jujiro Matsuda lived with Henry Ford for a year in Dearborn and then shipped components for his car back to Japan.

And as far as current relations are concerned, Mazda has been producing vehicles for General Motors since 2002.

How Much Will It Cost

The cost of the new Mazda RX7 is one of the biggest sticking points for most buyers. The current models range from about $35,000 for a base model up to about $40,000 for a top-end version with all of its bells and whistles.

It may seem like a lot but considering that most luxury cars cost nearly as much, the big difference is that luxury car owners usually want what they pay for.

But since you’re getting an entry-level sports car from Mazda when you buy an RX7, you get more bang for your buck without sacrificing quality.

Second Generation RX-7 (FC series)

The 4th series RX-7 was launched in 1985; it went down the same path as the first generation but with some minor differences. This series was more of a softer sport-tourer compared to the previous which was considered a pure sports car.

To improve the handling and reduce oversteering Mazda upgraded the rear suspension by fitting an independent rear suspension setup. On the steering part, Mazda opted to use rack and pinion, replacing the recirculating ball used in the previous model which improved the steering precision.

Mazda also made disc brakes as standard, with the introduction of the Dynamic Tracking Suspension System (DTSS) as well. The rear suspensions were revised, Mazda incorporated the special toe control hubs that were capable of introducing a certain degree of passive rear steering under cornering loads.

Under the hood, Mazda introduced the fuel-injected 13B-VDEI engine. It was a naturally aspirated engine that produced 146 HP and later a turbocharged model was introduced in 1987 which produced 182 HP and clocked 7.0 seconds from 0-100 KPH (0-60 MPH) time. These engines were coupled to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The 5th series saw an increase in power for both the naturally aspirated and turbocharged RX-7 models. The naturally aspirated produced 160 HP, while the turbocharged model produced 200 HP with some exceptions reaching 215 HP.

Third Generation RX-7 (FD Series)

In 1992 Mazda released the Series 6 of the RX-7. It was strikingly one of the best-designed cars from Japan at the time of release. It had a small ground clearance, the bodywork was curvy, flawless, and featured an elegantly organic style, unlike the previous boxy FC series. The total weight of the Series 6 RX-7 was significantly reduced to under 1300kg compared to the FC series whose weight was 1500kg, the center of gravity was lowered, power increased, and improved driving dynamics made this FD series RX-7 the best car on the market at the time.

Under the hood, this Series 6 RX-7 came with a 1.3-liter 13B-REW twin-turbocharged and twin-rotor engine that produced 255 HP. This RX-7 had very little turbo lag and due to that, it clocked 0-100 KPH (0-60 MPH) in 5.0 seconds.

In 1996 Series 7 of the RX-7 was released with some slight modifications. Some of the changes were an improved intake system, a simplified vacuum routing manifold that gave rise to a 10 HP increase in power, and a 16-bit ECU. This power increase was only evident on the manual transmission model as it came to effect at above 7000 rpm which was the redline for automatic RX-7. The RZ trim came with 17 inch BBS wheels and larger brake rotors.

In 1998 the Series 8 RX-7 was released as the final model. In this final series, Mazda improved the intercooler, radiator cooling performance by fitting a new front panel and installed more efficient turbos. The interior didn’t go untouched as the seats, instrument cluster, and steering wheel were changed. Some models were also fitted with an adjustable rear spoiler and the antilock braking system also received some improvements to improve cornering ability while braking.

The automatic transmission Series 8 RX-7 model was fitted with an engine that produced 251 HP, while the RB trim came with an engine that produced 261 HP and the high-end trims had an engine that produced 276 HP. The RS trim came fitted with 17-inch wheels and Bilstein suspension, while the RZ trim was almost similar to the RS, the major difference being curb weight, but also came with BBS wheels and featured custom red racing-themed interior.

First Generation RX-7

The first series RX-7 commonly referred to as the “SA22C” was powered by a Wankel engine positioned behind the front axle. This version came with two engines, one producing 105 HP and the other 115 HP. The drive option was rear-wheel-drive and the 5-speed manual transmission was standard, although there were also 4-speed manual/automatic and 3-speed automatic as options. Underneath the RX-7 featured 4-link rear suspension at the rear with Watt linkage and 50/50 weight ratio.

Mazda went on to release series 2 between 1981 and 1983, and series 3 between 1984 and 1985. All these series came with some engine tune-ups and bodies as well. 

Mazda boosted sales of 470,000 cars on this first model.

This run out in the first RX-7 feels just as fun today as it must have done way back then.
