How Much does the 2020 AMG C63 S Cost?

The 2020 AMG C63 S has a starting price of $76,695, including destination charge. For that money you get a wide range of performance and luxury features, including a 10.25-inch widescreen display above the dash, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry and keyless start, AMG-illuminated door sills, dual-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, LED headlights and taillights and power-folding exterior mirrors.

The C63 Sâ carbon ceramic brakes offer fade-free stopping power…but they arenât a cheap … option.

Karl Brauer

However, our 2020 AMG C63 S Sedan was priced at $94,540. Where did that extra $18,000 go? It included a $5,450 carbon ceramic brake package, $2,500 AMG performance seats, $1,750 19-inch AMG forged wheels, a $1,700 driver assistance package (smart cruise control, active steering assist, active lane change assist, active lane keeping assist, active blind spot assist, active brake assist, etc.), a $1,250 multimedia package (navigation, 3 years of LiveTraffic and Weather services, voice control and a touchpad), $1,100 parking assist package, $975 carbon fiber trim package, $900 adaptive lighting, $750 digital instrument cluster, $750 night package (high gloss black exterior trim and door sills) and $720 Selenite Grey Metallic paint.

What starts as a Mercedes-Benz C-Class becomes an entirely different car via AMG’s skilled artisans.

Karl Brauer

If you find yourself thinking it’s crazy to pay $95,000 for a Mercedes-Benz C-Class, regardless of what it’s called and how much performance it offers, you’re not off base. But it’s also likely you haven’t felt the pull of the twin-turbo V8, heard the roar of its exhaust note, or given close inspection to the exterior and interior build quality of the 2020 AMG C63 S. Do all of those things and see if the price still seems out of line with your expectations. Whether you think of it as a luxury car offering top-tier performance or a performance car offering top-tier luxury, the AMG C63 S offers a lot of car for the money.

How I’d spec it

As much as I like the optional wheels, gloss black and carbon fiber exterior parts, the added cost is steep. This car wears a hefty $106,440 price tag, including $995 for destination. I’d exercise a little more restraint for my ideal car, still splurging on some visual enhancements like a $2,020 Selenite Gray matte paint job and $900 carbon fiber interior trim. I’ll also go for the $5,450 carbon ceramic brakes and $2,500 AMG performance seats to make it more trackworthy, and the $200 wireless charge pad is an added bit of convenience. All in, my perfectly spec’d AMG coupe rings in at $88,645, which isn’t too high of a climb from the $78,495 base price.

How Fast is the 2020 AMG C63 S Sedan?

That’s right, the words “Mercedes-Benz” don’t even appear on this car’s widow sticker, though the three-pointed star is proudly displayed on it, right next to “2020 AMG C63 S Sedan” in bold print. Bold is the operative word for this luxury sedan, because the AMG C63, in “S” trim, is powered by a hand-built, 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 making 503 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The engine powers the rear wheels through a 9-speed automatic and electronic limited slip differential. The “S” trim also adds dynamic engine mounts and a specific AMG traction control system to better manage those 500 horses.

The AMG C63 S’ exhaust note is among the most enthralling offered on a modern performance car.

Karl Brauer

The AMG engineers seem to know what they’re doing, because if you mash the throttle on the AMG C63 S it will hit 60 mph in around 3.8 seconds and cover the quarter mile in less than 12 seconds. Even more rewarding than the car’s forward thrust is the glorious music emitted by its quad exhaust tips at full throttle. V8 engines have a natural advantage when it comes to beautiful exhaust notes, but this particular 4.0-liter V8 sounds as good, or better, than any six-figure exotic car on the market.

The letters “AMG” appear throughout the C63 S, but “Mercedes-Benz” is harder to locate.

Karl Brauer

For those annoying times when all-out acceleration isn’t appropriate, the C63 S Sedan provides as much daily-driven luxury and comfort as you’d expect from a Mercedes-Benz (even if those words make no appearance on the car’s exterior). The C63’s four-wheel independent suspension is supplemented by an AMG sport suspension with three settings. Some luxury buyers might feel the softest setting is still a bit firm for their tastes, but we had zero issues with the C63 S’ ride quality under normal driving conditions. And we were genuinely surprised by its rapid, agile response while aggressively navigating twisting canyon roads.

Forged, 19-inch black wheels and black exterior trim were among our AMG C63 S test carâs options.

2019 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe Chassis And Handling

— Independent suspension- Adaptive components as standard- Variable speed-sensitive steering

In the handling department, the C 63 offers further upgraded “dynamics,” courtesy of the boffins at AMG. The basics include a four-link front axle and a multi-link independent rear, both of which get techy adaptive components as standard.

Like the variable exhaust note, the suspension looks to offer the best of both worlds, including “sporty driving dynamics and brand-typical comfort on long journeys.” This dual personality is created by the onboard AMG Ride Control system, which combines steel components and adaptive dampers. Together, they create an electronically controlled system that automatically makes the appropriate adjustments on a wheel-per-wheel basis as it reads inputs from the current driving style, road conditions, and selected suspension mode.

Drivers can choose from a variety of damper settings, each of which is labeled as “Comfort,” “Sport,” and “Sport+.”

Helping to make the turns is an AMG speed-sensitive power steering system with a variable ratio. This set-up offers more assistance at low speeds, which is great for maneuvering through a parking lot, and more feedback at higher speeds, with both a “Comfort” and “Sport” mode to choose from.

2019 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe Prices

Following its debut at the 2018 New York Auto Show, the AMG C63 Coupe will go on sale early in 2019. Official pricing has not yet been announced, but it’ll likely remain more or less identical to that of the outgoing model, which currently starts at $67,500 for the base model C 63 Coupe and $75,500 for the C 63 S.

Audi RS5

As goes Mercedes and BMW, so goes Audi. Going tit for tat against AMG and the M Division is Audi’s line of RS models, which includes this two-door called the RS5. Rocking a cabin space dripping in luxury, including an optional digital cockpit display, the Audi certainly has the goods in the luxury department, and it’s got some stylish exterior bits to match. As for motivation, the Audi is powered by a turbocharged 2.9-liter V-6, which makes as much as 444 ponies and 443 pound-feet of torque at full chat, enabling a run to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds thanks to its quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro AWD grip. Pricing starts at $69,900.

Conclusion

With a history of posting solid sales numbers and a reputation for top-shelf speed and luxury, the AMG C 63 is a tough machine to beat. That said, both the Bavarian and Four-Ring competition listed above ain’t no slouch either, which means Merc has to stay on its toes if it wants to stay competitive. Luckily for Mercedes fans, the Affalterbach company knows this, and the latest C 63 refresh brings exactly what we’d expect.

“The AMG C-Class is our best-selling model series and therefore a key cornerstone of our company’s success of recent years,” explains Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers. “We have therefore increasingly expanded our C-Class offer: customers can now choose between twelve models from the C-Class family globally.”

Not too shabby, if you ask us. While it isn’t perfect, the C 63 is still an extremely potent combination of opulence, style, and speed, and that doesn’t look like it’ll change any time soon.

What’s new for 2019?

How impressive is that new grille?

The 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbocharged engine remains unchanged, but it’s not a deal-breaker by any stretch of the imagination – it’s a superb motor. Not only does it deliver a class-leading power output, it’s one of the best-sounding engines of all time. For the record, it delivers 375 kW and 700 Nm. The good news is that the older 7-speed transmission has been replaced by a new, fast-shifting 9-speed ‘box with a wet start-off clutch. Gearshift times have been reduced and the new clutch setup replaces the torque converter, which in turn, saves weight and is a tad more responsive.

Other nice additions are the new electronically-controlled rear differential, as well as a trick 9-stage traction control system similar to that first seen in the AMG GT R supercar. Visually, there’s the flamboyant Panamericana grille dominating the front end, some new-look tail lights, redesigned alloy wheels and some new exhaust tips at the rear. Inside, the vehicle gains a neat digital dashboard, as well as the latest updated steering wheel. You’ll notice 2 new features on the steering wheel: towards the middle are 2 controllers, which remove the need to fiddle with the centre console.

You can now easily switch between drive modes using the rotary controller on the right and it’s a cinch to scroll through vehicle settings such as those that pertain to manual gear changes, traction control on/off and auto start/stop… there’s even a mode to make the exhaust louder.

The updated steering wheel features a pair of rotary selector switches. Change driving modes, gearbox settings and more here.

2020 Mercedes C 63 AMG Engine

Driving the most recent 2020, Mercedes C 63 AMG is really a 4. liter dual-turbo V8 powerplant. The actual two-turbo is going to be acquired in 2 choices, the primary solution producing 469 horsepower while the S product will create 503 hp. The 1st will endure 479 lb-ft of torque as the, later on, will stand up to 516 lb-ft . of torque. It requires this car engine 3.9 secs, hitting a 60mph tag within the primary product in addition to 3.8 mere seconds from the S design.

2020 Mercedes C 63 AMG Engine

The best pace achievable is 155, along with 180 miles per hour for your primary and S types correspondingly. Both in the engine possibilities, the ability is passed on employing a 7 velocity creative production process that has enhanced comfort, specific, competition, and sport settings. The competition set is the one which brings about the best level of gasoline ingestion amongst the 4. The revocation in this particular auto is likewise improved to make the absolute best performance.

Summary

The changes are small, but significant and those who venture down this route will find a thoroughly modern and digitally connected cabin.

With the Mercedes-AMG C63 S in the latter half of its product cycle, it needed some updates to keep pace with developments in the marketplace. There are new rivals on the horizon: the next BMW M3 is due to be revealed soon and Audi has just bolstered its RS4/RS5 range in South Africa.

There’s just something so alluring about the brutish C63 S, which is quite likely to be AMG’s final exclusively rear-wheel-drive performance business class sedan/coupe/cabriolet. Not only is it tremendously powerful, it sounds absolutely wicked and offers a veritable smorgasbord of driving thrills.

The cabin sees the biggest changes. The new-look steering wheel is beautiful both to look at and wield, and the digital dashboard is a big leap forward. It’s no MBUX, but we’re likely to see that in the next-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class which should make an appearance in 2020.

While our time with the new Mercedes-AMG C63 S was fleeting and limited to just some track excursions, we’re eagerly looking forward to seeing if Affalterbach’s road rocket is now a little easier to live with on a daily basis. Some will hope it won’t be, but be that as it may, roll on the road test!

BMW M4

If it’s high-end two-door German luxury and performance that you’re after, then the Bavarians have a pretty stout competitor to consider — the venerable M4. Lightened thanks to copious use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic and packing 425 horsepower thanks to a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, the M4 can stampede up to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, all while coddling passengers in superlative comfort. More serious speed seekers can opt into upgrades like the Competition Package, which adds an extra 19 horses, race-tuned adaptive suspension, and stylish 20-inch wheels. Pricing starts at $68,700.

What’s it like to drive?

Our time with the updated Mercedes-AMG C63 S was limited to on-track testing. The best thing about being on track is you can really open the taps and thoroughly evaluate the vehicle in a safe environment. Given the tremendous grunt and performance on offer, this was a good thing. We did a few quick laps to test the vehicle’s handling and acceleration and conducted an interesting exercise to experience the 9-stage traction control.

One thing that’s always impressed us about the C63 S is its adaptability. Thanks to its multitude of driving modes, you can live with the vehicle on a day-to-day basis without fear of falling foul of its tremendous performance potential (it’d take a brave person to try to drive a C63 S on a wet road in its most aggressive mode). When in Comfort mode, the Benz behaves quite politely; the quad exhaust system emits just a subtle audible hint of the fire-breathing V8 lurking beneath its bonnet. But seeing that we were on a racetrack, we duly engaged Race mode, which put all the systems into maximum performance mode. The adaptive dampers firm up, the steering sharpens and the exhaust valves open fully – cue mechanical mayhem.

Kyalami: the safest and most logical place to test a V8-powered rear-wheel-drive super sedan.

As we departed the pits and headed out onto the circuit, the first thing that made a positive impression was the C63 S’ responsive new transmission. Not only does the vehicle change swiftly, but each shift produces a satisfying thud. With the new trick differential doing its thing, the Benz will mostly behave and not wag its tail, but if you’re too eager and generous with the throttle pedal, 700 Nm to the rear wheels will induce glorious oversteer.

Now, about that 9-stage traction control. Having experienced numerous rear-wheel-drive AMG products over the years, we’ve learnt that they have the potential to bite hard (misbehave) if you’re not circumspect with the throttle pedal – in fact, the traction control light can resemble a disco strobe as the car’s electronics struggle to maintain traction while trying to accelerate the car as quickly as possible. If you switch the C63 S’ traction to a Sport setting, you’re very likely to get some wheelspin; in fact, the V8’s outright grunt can easily overwhelm its rear tyres. But now, if you switch it off completely, you’ll see the new rotary dial on the steering wheel light up with a submenu. Here, the traction control can be programmed to allow some degree of slip. There are 9 settings: 1 will allow minimal amounts of silliness before intervening; 9 is off completely and you’re on your own.

With its new 9-speed gearbox, the C63 S feels eager off the line, with AMG claiming a 3.9-second sprint from 0 to 100 kph.

Mercedes-AMG set up a special course where could experiment with the various settings (we’d say numbers 7 and 8 represent about the most fun you can have safely). The functions allow you to properly hang the tail out while countersteering, while the V8 engine bellows at full volume and converts the rear tyres to smoke. Fun? Absolutely. Necessary? Probably not for your average driver. It’s a bit of a gimmick, much like the drift modes of some all-wheel-driven cars, but it’s a great talking point. The cool factor of saying, «Well, I do have a 9-stage traction control system» is off the charts and while the vast majority of C63 S owners won’t be taking their cars to the track, those who do will have a terrific time «finding their limits».

Does the new transmission help with acceleration? While initial urge will always be a battle for grip, Mercedes-AMG claims its new C63 S will sprint from 0 to 100 kph in just 3.9 seconds (for the sedan) and reach a top speed of 290 kph. We think the additional ratios are mostly for fuel economy.

Twin-turbo V8 heart

Things get interesting from the moment you push the C63’s engine start button and the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine roars to life. Its low, rumbly exhaust note at idle lets you know that 503 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque are wide awake and ready to party. That’s in the S model, anyway, which has a nice increase over the 469 hp and 479 lb-ft in the regular C63. AMG says the S can hit 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and top out an electronically limited speed of 180 mph. The non-S is a tenth slower to 60 mph and tops out at 155.

Put the C63’s engine to work and it doesn’t take long to realize it’s a special piece. It’s muscle-car strong with thrust everywhere in the rev range. Peak torque arrives at just 1,750 rpm and it continues to pull hard to the 7,000-rpm redline, making fantastic sounds all the while.

Delivering power to the C63’s rear wheels is a nine-speed dual-clutch transmission. With the car in Dynamic or Race modes, manually selecting gears using the metal steering wheel-mounted paddles is worth doing. Responses to shift commands are nearly immediate, which makes it easy to keep the engine boiling during acceleration and rapidly drop a cog or two while braking.

When you aren’t wringing it out, the C63’s drivetrain is happy to just chill with a Comfort setting. This dials things back some — the power delivery isn’t quite as hyperactive and the gearbox provides smooth launches and swaps. If you can keep your right foot in check, the EPA estimates a fuel economy return of 17 miles per gallon in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Not too shabby considering the engine’s output.

G-Class

AMG Driver‘s package.
