2023 jaguar f-type – performance, price, and photos

Comfort & Room: 13/15

As a car built for two people, the F-Type is cozy but not cramped as some reviewers have claimed. It is wider than a Porsche Cayman and feels less confining than the C8 Corvette (especially since the cockpit is only partially divided by a grab handle instead of completely separated by the dashboard). Headroom and legroom are sufficient for six-foot-two individuals, even with the optional panoramic glass roof, but anyone taller is a statistical outlier that sports cars (and race cars) aren’t designed to accommodate.

We’d recommend the glass roof since it brightens up the standard black cabin tremendously and has a manual shade (which actually blocks light instead of sunlight burning through the thin mesh or no-shade designs trending on newer cars). The only downside: It doesn’t open.

The standard leather seats with microsuede inserts are supportive and comfortable but lack the adjustable side bolstering from previous F-Type models. They power adjust in only six ways so we recommend the 12-way Performance seats which offer more bolstering (and look spiffier with the patterned leather surrounding a silver neck cutout). Many sports cars and sports coupes come with cramped rear seats that owners rarely use. The F-Type doesn’t bother.

The 2023 Jaguar F-TYPE R COUPE overview

The Jaguar F-TYPE R is a stunner from any angle. Think baby Aston.

Machines With Souls. Surely you’re thinking that if any kind of car carries a soul, it is of the sports variety. And the Jaguar F-TYPE R fits the bill. It takes the supercharged V-8 engine from the F-PACE SVR and stuffs it into a small (but not light) coupe body. The result is a thing of absolute beauty.

The F-TYPE has been around for awhile now. Launched in 2014, it was meant to be the spiritual successor to the classic E-TYPE. There have been various updates to the car’s looks and powertrain since inception, and Jag has now streamlined the trims with the P450 or this R. Both feature the wonderful V-8, but only the R gets the fully juiced 575 horsepower version. No more turbo four, SVR (boo), or V-6 (yay). No more stick either.

A Jaguar F-TYPE before the current face lift.

It’s also one of the last kids left at the dance, which is why 2023 will be the F-TYPE’s final year. That’s a shame because there really isn’t anything else like it. The Porsche 911 might be a more popular choice, but it’s not quite the same car, is it? Small back seat, rear-engine. Same for the Corvette. Ditto anything at the BMW store. Maybe you’re eyeing the Mercedes AMG GT, but that has a base price that starts where the Jaguar F-TYPE’s ends.

That makes it a special car. How special?

Utility Score: 4. Enough to make a weekend of it.

It’s tight but functions well enough.

The 2023 F-TYPE is a two-seater, so that score should be kept in context of other sports cars. But you could do worse here.

Pop the hatch (and remove the privacy partition), and my camera case juuust fits in the trunk. You can use it to go food shopping easily.

Climb into the very comfortable seats, and you’ll find enough room for you, your honey, some sunglasses and a smile. Even the cup holders are in an awkward spot. You sit low, but ingress isn’t difficult; the Corvette was a lot harder to mount up. Speaking of, there’s a nice little grab handle on the passenger side of the F-TYPE, unlike the chastity wall of switches in the Vette’s cabin.

Also a nice surprise is visibility. It’s not hard to see out of the rear of the F-TYPE, and parking is no chore at all. In some low-slung cars, you need to dodge around mirrors and pillars to see, but not so here. Sit inside a Camaro to understand how bad a two-door can be to see out of.

There’s enough space here to keep you comfortable on the backroads, or for a weekend trip to the lake. Otherwise, grab the keys to your F-PACE.

My camera case fits!

2023 Jaguar F-Type Redesign

Exterior And Interior Design

The 2023 version of the Jaguar F-Type will be proportioned higher than the previous model due to the fact that the company will scratch away at the current platform. This will generally result in a more spacious interior. Regarding our exterior design, we were expecting the new model to get an update. Jag will likely improve the appearance of the car with a tweaked headlight design, and we can expect to see the most elegant 20-inch wheels made of alloy.

2023 Jaguar F-Type Exterior

In any case, the 2023 Jaguar F-Type offers a few wheel designs, featuring brake calipers in black or red. The adaptive suspension is included and allows you to switch between road trip ease and track-worthy precision. In addition, F-Type R will be offered, and is expected to get some tweaks in its appearance as well as a wide range of standard features for convertible and coupe models.

Inside, the earlier model was criticized for its small interior. The new 2023 Jaguar F-Type will definitively offer more space due to the platform that is stcrached. It’s true that this car is extremely athletic and not at all family-friendly. The trunk of the coupe should be 14.4 cubic feet based on the information we have gotten, this is sufficient to hold a couple of sets of golf club or two bags. Naturally, if you opt for the convertible trunk model will give you just 7.3 cubic inches.

2023 Jaguar F-Type Interior

On the technological side on the technology side, it’s a technological marvel. Jaguar F-Type comes with a leather/simulated suede seating, one-zone climate control that is automatic and 6-way power-adjustable seating. 12.3-inch customizable Digital Driver Information Display as well as an 10.1-inch touchscreen information system. We expect navigation, WiFi satellite radio, USB port and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone connectivity to be included as standard. A F-Type R version is on sale in addition and features 12 way power-adjustable seats, memory settings, and a steering column that can be adjusted with memory, as well as self-dimming mirrors.

Cargo Space & Storage: 11/15

A two-person cabin should free up cargo space, but in many sports cars like the Aston Martin Vantage or Nissan Z, they have awkward humps and intrusions. The F-Type, at least as a coupe, is smartly arranged on one level and compensates for the large double-wishbone suspension by carving out extra space in the fenders at the frontmost part of the cargo area.

Remove the cargo cover and there’s an ample 14 cubic feet of space, plus a hidden compartment underneath the cargo tray (there’s no spare tire). It won’t swallow a golf bag like a Corvette and doesn’t have two trunks like a Cayman, but the F-Type handles a weekend vacation or a grocery store run better than most two-seat sports cars. The convertible’s trunk, due to the soft top’s mechanism and storage, is barely five cubic feet, about even with a Mazda MX-5 Miata. It doesn’t power up or down like the coupe’s tailgate.

The two central cupholders, central cubby and door map pockets are more generously sized than in a 911. Older F-Type models had a small cubby on the parcel shelf between the seats, but more recent years have sealed it and have a net to secure phones. The glove box is a good size and deploys by an electric latch.

Is it still fast?

Since the 2023 Jaguar F-Type is mechanically unchanged from 2022, it’s only available with a supercharged V8 and eight-speed automatic. And enjoy it while it lasts. Based on what Jaguar Land Rover CEO Thierry Bolloré recently said, the F-Type will be the brand’s last gasoline-powered sports car. After this, it’s all EVs.

As before, the more powerful F-Type R is the faster version. And Car and Driver verified that Jaguar’s 3.5-second 0-60 claim for the R is accurate. Furthermore, its testing revealed that the 2023 F-Type R should run the ¼-mile in 11.7 seconds. That still makes it slower than the C8 Corvette, but it should keep up with a 911 Carrera.

Jaguar F-Type Review 2023

Jaguar F-Type is two-seater sports car manufactured by British automaker since 2013. Based on the XK convertible, it is a successor to the iconic E-Type. Initially, only a soft-top version was launched but later a coupe version was also introduced. This car was unveiled for the first time at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show followed by the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. Jaguar F-Type features cutting-edge technology, state-of-the-art design and an exhilarating performance. It is known for the Jaguar Alive DNA that includes Alive Performance, Alive Design and Alive Technology. In all, it can be considered as a true Jaguar sports car.

Safety & Driver Assistance Tech: 8/15

The F-Type has not been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or the European New Car Assessment Program. Six airbags come standard. So do forward emergency braking, lane keep assist, driver attention monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.

A unique feature among new cars is the adaptive speed limiter, which cuts the throttle at a preset speed (without using cruise control). Adaptive cruise control and a semi-automated highway function are unavailable.

Blind-spot monitoring is optional ($550 and highly recommended), but here again is a feature specific to Jaguar Land Rover: A closing-speed alert. When a vehicle approaches from behind the F-Type at a higher speed (10 mph or more), the system rapidly flashes an alert in the mirror seconds before the vehicle comes into the blind spot. That way, you have early warning and don’t even attempt to change lanes.

The F-Type may not be new, but its in-car tech has aged well, and the company also offers a fair number of active-safety assists, including some that aren’t available elsewhere.  Jaguar

Fuel Economy: 12/15

Fuel economy is EPA-rated at 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined for the P450 RWD. All other models with all-wheel drive are 16 mpg city, 24 mpg, and 18 mpg combined. Coupe and convertible models receive the same ratings.

This matches the Chevrolet Corvette and is just under the Porsche 911 Carrera (18, 24 and 20) or a Porsche 718 Cayman GTS (19, 24 and 21). A BMW M4 Competition returns 16 mpg city, 23 highway and 19 combined. An Aston Martin Vantage earns 18, 24 and 20. The Mercedes-AMG SL, equally glamorous but and faster more expensive, fares much worse at 16 mpg combined max. Considering the F-Type uses a large eight-cylinder engine while the Porsche models use smaller sixes, the efficiency is rather good for a car of this type.

performance-focused cabin

Inside, the cabin is dedicated to performance – all at the fingertips of the driver. There is a sense of theater as soon as the passengers sit in. A red start button draws the eye and begs to be pushed, as the engine roars to life, the 12.3-inch reconfigurable display is ignited, and the center air vents are deployed. The 1+1 cockpit uses the racing steering wheel and gearshift in the center console to contain all features needed to curate the drive.

designboom editor tim spears says au revoir to the Jaguar F-Type as we know it

Rich materials, such as the Windsor leather on the seats as standard, are expertly crafted to evoke a sportiness. The same unique silhouette motif from the exterior is continued inside, adorning the center console and treat plates. Lightweight slimline seats – available as sport or performance options – are ergonomically-optimized to deliver comfort no matter speed. A crafted monogram stitch pattern is repeated across the seats, door trims, and headrests to add a final touch of luxury to the otherwise sports-focused interior.

What kind of features does the 2023 Jaguar F-Type offer?

2023 Jaguar F-Type P450 Coupe interior | Jaguar

Although the P450 is the base 2023 Jaguar F-Type, its features list isn’t barren. Besides the supercharged V8, the P450 comes standard with an active exhaust, electronic limited-slip differential, and active rear spoiler. And it rides on adaptive shocks as well as 20” wheels.

Furthermore, it has six-way power-operated sports seats, all-LED lighting, a 10” center touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, and a 380-watt Meridian sound system. Plus, plenty of leather upholstery and chrome trim as well as rain-sensing wipers and heated exterior mirrors. Also, the F-Type P450 comes standard with lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic emergency braking.

These are the RWD 2023 Jaguar F-Type P450’s features, by the way. In addition to AWD, the R-Dynamic trim gets an aluminum center console, 12-way power-operated seats with memory, some gloss-black exterior trim, and unique wheels and pedals. And the range-topping F-Type R gets a power tailgate, keyless entry, Windsor leather performance seats, upgraded interior lighting, and some R-specific exterior and interior trim.

As for options, you can swap out the 2023 F-Type Coupe’s body-colored roof for a fixed panoramic glass one. Whether you get a Coupe or Convertible, though, you can spec it with a 770-watt Meridian Surround-Sound system, suede or leather headliner, and a knurled-aluminum center console. If you want a heated steering wheel, it’s part of the Climate Pack, which also adds a heated windshield and dual-zone climate control. Meanwhile, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert come with the Blind Spot Assist Pack.

Interior Quality & Technology

Jaguar

Interior shot of Jaguar F-Type with Sienna Tan leather upholstery

Step into the tight but cossetting high-quality cabin of the cabin and you’ll find an excellent choice of materials and tech on offer. Last year’s update saw the introduction of a new 12.0-inch fully digital gauge cluster. This is a highly configurable screen, and you can even have it serve you with a full map view. While the new gauge cluster is excellent, the central infotainment screen isn’t the latest PIVI Pro system found on more recent Jaguar Land Rover products. Thankfully, you do get Apple Car Play and Android Auto, but you will still need to use the system in order to control certain drive functions. A 12-speaker 770 watts optional Meridian Surround System ($900) is also available should ever get bored of that V8.

A highlight of the F-Type’s interior is the pop-up style central air-vents that sit atop the dash. It is theatrical and sure does offer a sense of occasion, every time you fire up the pulsating Start/Stop button and bring that V8 to life. The optional Fixed Panoramic Roof ($1,200) is a nice compromise and offers the best of both worlds, giving you some thrill of an open-top experience.

You have some snug-looking powered sports seats finished in a combination of suede and leather. You can choose from black or oyster themes. The top-spec R even gets you to contrast stitching at no extra cost. While seat heating and cooling are on offer, you don’t get the option of a heated steering wheel or an air scarf, on the convertible. As for practicality is not the best, but you still get a glove box, a central cubby, and a pair of cup holders. The trunk has a cargo capacity of 14.4 cubic feet which is just about right for a vehicle of this type.

Interior Dimensions
Seating Capacity 2
Headroom 36.8 in
Legroom 42.8 in
Cargo Room 14.4 cu-ft

Performance: 13/15

All F-Type models come with a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 with either 444 hp (base, R-Dynamic) or 575 hp (R). The base car comes exclusively in rear-wheel drive while the other two use variable-split all-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic is the only transmission.

The soundtrack is god-tier. At full throttle, the F-Type roars and off throttle, it pops and crackles like a Harley. You can thank (or curse) Jaguar for being one of the first manufacturers to offer a snap-crackle-pop burble-tune from the factory, on this very car, in 2014.

The latest model is quieter and calmer than previous years, in part due to customer feedback (the car now cold-starts with its exhaust flaps closed instead of wide open) and also due to more stringent noise regulations, particularly in Europe. Another reason, as we’ve discovered on the F-Type forums: Earlier V8 cars tend to burn out their oxygen sensors and catalytic converters (the pops happen downstream due to excess fuel sent to the exhaust). The car still sounds great, but it’s not quite as comically loud as it was.

In any driving mode, the F-Type shifts quickly—especially on the highway in eighth gear when the car is putting along and instantly engages third—and the paddle shifters respond just as well. There’s no getting around a large V8 with a supercharger. It pulls hard, linearly, and doesn’t let go until you do. Handling isn’t as balanced or precise as a 911 and the grip levels can’t match the Corvette.

Despite the all-aluminum chassis, the F-Type is rather heavy (nearly 4,000 pounds), especially in the nose due to that big engine. But the tuning of the double-wishbone suspension and the road feedback from the electric-assisted steering feel natural and completely settled. An F-Type will carve corners in haste without beating you up with a stiff ride on long cruises. It’s very good. Just know it’s not an unbeatable time-attack machine like a Cayman GTS.

Is the 2023 Jaguar F-Type Worth it? Which F-Type is the Best Value?

The best value is the base, rear-wheel drive F-Type coupe. That wasn’t always the case, but since Jaguar has ditched the smaller engines for an all-V8 lineup, the 2023 model delivers a lot more car for the money at the lower end of its lineup.

The P450 starts at $74,675 (including an $1,150 destination fee) with more power and all the features of the previous P380 R-Dynamic trim (which had a V6) at a lower price. It comes with 20-inch wheels, adaptive dampers, limited-slip differential and the throaty V8 with the loud active exhaust that made the F-Type famous.

The P450 R-Dynamic adds all-wheel drive, 12-way power seats, and a few other niceties for $85,175 while the R, at $109,775, throws down the max power. Still, like any European car, it pays to check the right options (keyless entry isn’t standard on lower trims and dual-zone climate is extra even on the R). But try getting a Porsche with soft leather sun visors and leather stitched into the pillars. A fully-loaded F-Type R touches $125,000, which is the cost of a sparsely equipped 911 Carrera S.

Compared to a Corvette or an M4, the F-Type seems expensive for the performance it delivers. It’s slower in acceleration and grips less tenaciously. But if race track stats don’t matter to you, the F-Type is a value. It looks like it costs twice the price.

When can I buy the new Jag F-Type? And when does it go off sale?

The final model year Jaguar F-Type cars go on sale in January 2023. A fitting start to the year when the big cat will celebrate 75 years since its first sports car – the XK120 of 1948.

Sadly, it’s on countdown to retirement. Matthew Beaven, Jaguar Land Rover chief exterior designer, said: ‘For 75 years Jaguar has been renowned for producing extraordinary sports cars that deliver performance, agility and maximum driver reward. The F-Type special editions hold true to these principles, adding unique interior and exterior design details to celebrate this lineage before Jaguar becomes an all-electric brand from 2025.’

Main Competition

When it comes to choosing a V8-powered sports car these days, the choices are now fewer and far between. Strangely one of the Jaguar F-Type’s main competitors comes from Japan in the form of the Lexus LC500. Just like the Jag, the Lexus too, is available as a coupe or a convertible along with a V8 under the hood. While the LC500 costs $94,300 and carries a $20,000 price premium over the F-Type, it does offer more power at 471 horsepower from the 5.0 liter V-8. For similar money, you could get into an F-Type R-Dynamic convertible.

If we’re talking two-seater convertible though, you could also bring in models like the excellent BMW Z4 and the Audi TT Roadster. However, neither car offers a V8. Then you’ve got the Porsche Boxter which has a totally different dynamic altogether, considering that it’s mid-engined. This neatly brings us back to the Jaguar F-Type which continues to offer the more traditional front-engined rare wheel drive layout married to V8 power, the right ingredients of what makes for an excellent sportscar.

Jaguar

2023 Jaguar F-Type Offers More Power Under the Hood

Jaguar is dropping the aging four and six-cylinder engines in favor of a V-8-only. As we mentioned, the upcoming sports car will now consist of two models, a new P450 and the R model. The F-Type P450 should continue to be available in coupe or convertible with either rear or all-wheel drive. Interestingly, this time, the manufacturer added a new supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 that produces 444 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque. Jaguar claims that this model will reach 60 mph in 4.4 seconds with a 177-mph top speed.

The F-Type R is a more powerful engine. It also uses a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8, but it delivers 575-hp. Unlike the P450 model, this one comes standard with an all-wheel drive. Jaguar also stated that and R model can reach 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

Technology Inside

Inside, the previous model has been criticized for having a small cabin. However, the new 2023 Jaguar F-Type will definitively offer more room, thanks to the stcrached platform. After all, this car is sporty and is not family-friendly at all. The coupe’s luggage area should measure 14.4 cubic feet from the information we got, which is enough for a couple of sets of golf clubs or bags for two. Naturally, choosing the convertible model trunk, you’ll get only 7.3 cubic feet.

On the technology side, the Jaguar F-Type comes with a leather/simulated suede upholstery, single-zone automatic climate control, 6-way power-adjustable seats, 12.3-inch configurable digital driver information display, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system. We expect navigation, Wi-Fi, satellite radio, USB port, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration to come also as standard. The F-Type R model is available as well, and it includes 12-way power-adjustable seats with memory settings, a power-adjustable steering column with memory, and self-dimming mirrors.

Features and comfort: 6. The pastures are calling.

Let’s first remember that the F-TYPE came out nearly ten years ago, and while it’s had plenty of updates, the car is nevertheless starting to show its age. That’s a problem when you consider the $121,780 as-tested price.

Let’s start with good things first. Sit inside, and you’re surrounded by the softest, highest-quality leather this side of an Aston. The seats, steering wheel, doors and dash are all swathed in it. And those seats are all-day comfortable. They hug you in just the right spots.

The gigantic sunroof fills the entire top of the car and makes you feel like you’re in a fighter jet. The glass actually comes forward of your field of view, so you’re getting a full panoramic experience. And since we’re talking jets, the old-school toggle switches on the dash look awesome, while the center stack air vents that rise out of the dash on startup are a nice “cool!” moment.

There are a few toys. A ducktail spoiler motors up at highway speeds, with a button on the dash to control it. A nice Meridian sound system complete with subwoofer is here, but went to waste for me because supercharger soundtracks are better. Beautiful SVO Ultra Metallic Gloss paint is a $4,550 option.

Ultra-soft leather feels great to grip everywhere in the cabin.
The large sunroof doesn’t open, but provides a great view. It’s a must-have $1,200 option.
The door handles retract when locked.

Hello, computer

I can picture it already. The bean counters at Jag HQ saying “no, we can’t update the F-TYPE’s infotainment system. We sell five a month, and it’s going away soon.”

Fine. But because I’ve been in the F-PACE, I know what the company is capable of, and it’s hard not to feel a little let down by what can only be described as an outdated unit. Plug your phone into the USB port so you can use Apple CarPlay, nothing over the air. Ignore the washed out look of the second-rate center display. And though the digital dash offers easy-to-read dials, it’s carried over from the F-PACE and feels tacked on as an after thought. No Heads-up display is offered.

The seats are all-day comfortable, with multiple adjustable points and a nice long bottom cushion.
Looks great, but the nav is an eye sore.

Cars like this need to feel special in every way, especially where you most interact with it.

Overall, the interior feels a bit on the cheap side considering the price point. Nice leather can only hide so much. It might make more sense at the F-TYPE’s base price of $74,675, but that’s for the slower P450 model. In fact, the F-TYPE itself might make more sense at that level. The $50,000 gap is a lot for the extra power, shiny paint and all-wheel drive.

But then you drive the R, rev the V-8, and honestly who the hell cares about plugging in a phone, or the bad day you just had, or anything else in your life that doesn’t make your insides vibrate.

The Jaguar F-TYPE R features LED lights and curves as standard. Yum.
