Style & Design: 7/10

The 2022 Jeep Cherokee distinguishes itself from other compact SUVs with its more rugged appearance and off-road capabilities. This is especially true for the Trailhawk model with its all-terrain tires, off-road suspension, wheel-arch extensions and red recovery hooks. It’s a welcome change from the more family-oriented SUVs. The interior is more conventional and in line with rivals, but points are deducted for some hard plastic elements.

The Cherokee’s rivals are diverse in their interpretation of SUV style, with the Honda CR-V being the most conventional. The Mazda CX-5 brings a sleeker style and near-luxury interior while the Subaru Forester sort of splits the difference between the Honda and Jeep.

For most SUV shoppers, who will rarely if ever leave the pavement, it’s difficult to recommend the Jeep Cherokee. For those who will, there are few direct analogs. Jeep

Infotainment: 10/15

With the elimination of the old base model’s 7-inch infotainment touchscreen, all displays are now the 8.4-inch version. A native navigation system is only available on the Trailhawk and Limited trims as an option. It’s unlikely most shoppers would complain about this availability since Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the board and offer their own navigation options. Also standard is a free trial of the built-in wifi hotspot, satellite radio and Sirius XM traffic services, if you have built-in navigation.

The standard audio system comes with six speakers, but shoppers can upgrade any trim to the premium nine-speaker Alpine system that comes standard on the Limited trim. The infotainment system is intuitive and easy to use, thanks to logical menus and appropriately-sized on-screen buttons. There are also standard voice controls for features such as climate, radio and navigation.

Shoppers seeking practicality and convenience should be aware that the Cherokee’s cargo capacity is small for the class.  Jeep

Comfort & Room: 11/15

The Jeep Cherokee provides ample room for adults up front as well as in the rear seats. The front seats are cushioned for long-distance comfort, but don’t offer much lateral support when cornering. Ruts and bumps in the road are smoothed over quite well, eliminating any harsh impacts, but some uneven undulations do tend to cause some noticeable side-to-side jostling. Road and wind noises are present but not intrusive, even in the off-road specific trims.

Rear-seat legroom is generous for the class while headroom is about average. With 40.3 inches of legroom and 38.5 inches of headroom, the Cherokee is right up there with the Honda CR-V’s 40.4 inches of legroom and 39.2 inches of headroom. The Mazda CX-5 offers 39.6 inches of legroom and 39 inches of headroom, while the Subaru Forester measures 39.4 inches of legroom and 37.6 inches of headroom.

2023 Jeep Cherokee Design

Design-wise, we have no doubt that the 2023 Jeep Cherokee will come with significant changes. First of all, it will ride on a new platform. We still don’t know which one, but we know that there are two possibilities for the next-generation Cherokee. The first one is, of course, the Giorgio platform. This architecture underpins the new Grand Cherokee. This would mean an RWD layout, while the other benefits would be significant weight reduction, improved handling etc.

Also, keep in mind that Jeep is now part of Stellantis, which includes PSA Group as well. So, we wouldn’t be surprised if the 2023 Jeep Cherokee comes with a design that has a lot in common with some of Peugeot’s models, particularly the 3008 model. In that case, the new Cherokee would keep the FWD layout, though it would come with plenty of new possibilities regarding electrification and other technologies.

Exterior

Since the officials are still quiet, and there is no test mule yet, the 2023 Jeep Cherokee’s styling is still a mystery. At this point, we can only speculate about the look and what comes to mind is the brand’s new design language, introduced with new Wagoneer and Grand Cherokee models. So, we may presume that the new Cherokee would come with a pretty similar front-end design, which would mean an evolutionary design approach.

When it comes to dimensions, we don’t expect significant changes compared to the current model. The current model features 106.3 inches in wheelbase and 182 inches in total length, which are typical dimensions for the segment of compact crossovers.

Interior

The cabin design is probably the weakest point of the current generation. Rivals offer nicer materials, better build quality, more tech features etc. Simply, the current Cherokee lags behind the competition in this aspect. So, we expect to see some big changes in the upcoming redesign. Of course, the focus would be on interior quality and tech features, while we count on new aesthetics as well.

Besides the new cabin look, we also expect slight improvements regarding interior space. The current model stands pretty well in this aspect, offering two adult-friendly rows of seats. The 2023 Jeep Cherokee shouldn’t be any different, though we would like to see a little bit more cargo space in the new model.

Price & Release Date

Made at the new Detroit Assembly Complex – Mack plant, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has started reaching U.S. dealerships. Availability looks limited at the moment, though. We’ve seen Sam Leman Chrysler Jeep Dodge Bloomington in Bloomington, Illinois, Jersey City, New Jersey-based Hudson Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM, and a few other dealers who have begun receiving stock list it online.

Prices of the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe start at USD 60,360 and go up to approximately USD 77,570. A destination charge of USD 1,795 is applicable to all grades.

Configuration Price
Grand Cherokee 4xe USD 60,360
Grand Cherokee 30th Anniversary 4xe USD 65,060
Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe USD 65,755
Grand Cherokee Overland 4xe USD 68,375
Grand Cherokee Summit 4xe USD 73,090
Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve 4xe USD 77,570

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe prices in the U.S. excluding the USD 1,795 destination charge

The Grand Cherokee is the best-selling Jeep in the U.S. In 2022, it recorded 223,345 units in annual sales, marking a 16% year-over-year decline (2022: 264,444 units). The 4xe variant went on sale in the fourth quarter and accounted for 11% of the model’s sales (5,813 of 50,800 units) during that period.

2023 Jeep Cherokee Engines

When it comes to the powertrain, there are several possibilities for the next generation. Most likely, the company will get rid of the older-generation units, such as a 2.4-liter inline-four and the 3.3-liter V6. On the other hand, the current 2.0-liter turbo-four will remain on the offer. This engine puts out 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which is enough power to ensure respectable driving dynamics. Also, we count on a new transmission, which will probably be an 8-speed automatic.

Considering the possibility of tight cooperation with Peugeot, we shouldn’t exclude the possibility to see a couple of hybrid versions as well. This particularly refers to the new PHEV system from the French company, which is based on a 1.6-liter turbo-four engine and comes in two different versions. The standard one comes with the electric motor at the front and puts out around 225 horsepower. There is also a version with the additional electric motor on the rear axle, which increases the max output to 300 horsepower.

Cargo Space & Storage: 6/15

The Cherokee can accommodate up to 25.8 cubic-feet of cargo behind the rear seats, which is small for these SUVs. The class-leading CR-V can hold 39.2 cubic-feet while the Mazda CX-5 maxes out at 30.8. Even the Subaru Forester has it beat with 26.9. Folding the Cherokee’s rear seats expands the capacity to 54.7 cubic-feet, which still trails the CR-V’s 75.8, the CX-5’s below-average 59.3, and the Forester’s 69.1.

The Cherokee is helped slightly by its low liftover height and adjustable load floor, but these features are also found in rivals. Interior storage for your personal items is adequate, with moderately-sized cupholders and door pockets that are boosted by a deep center armrest bin. There’s a narrow tray behind the cupholders that can hold a phone, but there’s no wireless charging.

Grades & Features

The features of the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe 30th Anniversary edition from the 2022 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS 2022) are available with an optional package costing USD 4,700. The 30th Anniversary edition package is available to order for a limited time, and deliveries of the 2023 Grand Cherokee 4xe units specified with it will start soon.

With its blackened exterior, the 30th Anniversary edition package gives the 2023 Grand Cherokee a unique appearance. It includes a modified front fascia, special-edition badging, new 20-inch black wheels, dual exhaust, body-colored rear fascia, lower moldings, wheel flares, and sill claddings, a dual-pane sunroof, and blue tow hooks. Inside, the 2023 Grand Cherokee equipped with the 30th Anniversary edition package has black Capri leather seats.

Interior

The interior of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe recycles the 2022 model’s design. The plug-in hybrid SUV features a sumptuous interior with a sleek dashboard and AC vents, a compact steering wheel, a 10.1-inch floating central display, a 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster, and a waterfall-like center console with a rotary selector and a wireless charger among others. Open-pore Waxed Walnut wood trim, memory and massage front seats, suede pillars and headliner, and a rear-seat entertainment system consisting of dual 10.1-inch touchscreens allow the occupants to travel luxuriously.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe continues featuring the segment-first 10.25-inch front passenger screen. Image Source: Stellantis

A talking point of the Grand Cherokee 4xe is the 10.25-inch front passenger screen integrated into the dashboard. The additional screen offers co-pilot assistance with navigation, camera viewing, and visual entertainment, making the journey for the front passenger nearly as engaging as the driver. Other changes inside the two-row model include updated switches, increased storage space in the front bin, and a new HD rear-seat entertainment system with FireTV built-in.

Safety & Driver Assistance Tech: 10/15

The National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) gives the Cherokee Prime five out of five stars overall, with four stars for frontal and rollover crash protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the Cherokee its best score of “Good” across all crash tests.

Standard safety features for all Cherokees include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keep assist. Adaptive cruise control and a semi-automated parking system are exclusive to the top Limited trim.

Unlike many off-road-capable vehicles, the Cherokee doesn’t sacrifice comfort. It rides about as nice as other SUVs and there’s plenty of space in every seat.  Jeep

Jeep Cherokee Review 2023

Introduction

Jeep, the wholly owned subsidiary of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was incepted in the year 1941. The American all-terrain expertise were known for producing military vehicles and now the company is widely acclaimed for its high end off-roader and 4X4 beasts. Jeep is a name which actually represents the rugged models since many decades. The brand started manufacturing civilian models in 1945 and came out shining with the Jeep Cherokee in 1974. The latest facelift was unveiled for the first time at the 2013 New York International Auto Show and created a huge uproar in the automobile market. Now, the Jeep is quite enthusiastic to enter Cherokee in Malaysian market with same zeal.

Engine, mileage and variants

Jeep Cherokee comes to Malaysia in two vivid trim levels namely Longitude and Trailhawk. The off-roader is powered by the contemporary 2.4-litre Tigershark I4 and 3.2-litre Pentastar V6, and a 2.0-litre turbo diesel potent powerhouse beneath the hood. The Cherokee churns out maximum power range of 174 hp to 270 hp between 6400 rpm to 6500 rpm. The American car maker also offers the car with a 350 Nm torque machine to challenge the rugged off-road tracks. Owing to its 9-speed transmission mated with the powerhouse of the car allows it to hit 0-100 kmph in 9.5 seconds, and reaches out to a top speed of 180 kmph. The Cherokee is introduced with latest gaining economies from the start/stop technology which allows the vehicle to deliver a decent mileage of 10.4 kmpl.

Exterior

Cherokee is designed with the traditional rugged look along with the elegance of a luxury SUV. The front fascia of the car features a chrome tinted wide radiator grille which also enhances the performance by drawing ample air to the engine bay. The car features sleekly designed high intensity head lamps incorporated with LED daytime lights that enhances the visibility along with the elegance of the car. Apart from this the Cherokee has a broad wheel arch and reinforced front bumpers, which imparts an aggressive persona to the front. The body dimensions of the Cherokee measures out to be 4622 mm X 1859 -1902 mm X 1688- 1722 mm (L X W X H), which suits nicely to the masculine silhouette of the car. Besides this, the alloy sizes of 17 and 18-inch are wrapped by all season tyre, with standard size of 225/55 R18.

Interior

Climb up the Jeep Cherokee and rejuvenate your senses with luxury. Cherokee on the inside is contrary to its off roader image on the outside. The Cherokee is meticulously crafted with comfort and generous trims that spreads an aura of plushness all around. The leather upholstered sports seats of the car has comfort adjustment parameters which allows the seats to alter its position automatically. The off-roader becomes a treat for the audiophile owing to the Alpine Premium sound system implanted to it. The central console embedded with Hi-resolution 8.4-inch touch screen comprises navigation system and audio controls that takes the Cherokee to another level of ergonomics. With ample space for the occupants, the Cherokee comes with a decent boot space of 696-litres, thus settling your load of luggage.

Safety, Braking and Miscellaneous

Jeep Cherokee can be cruised around all tough terrains without being formidable of the safety as the American maker has loaded the off-roader with many safety technologies. The Cherokee is employed with efficient disc brakes coupled with the anti-lock braking system that eliminates skidding by preventing the wheel lock condition during instant braking. The car also features Blind Spot Monitoring system which alerts the driver if there is any vehicle propelling in the blind spot area. Apart from it the ParkView rear backup camera with a display unit affixed to the centre allows it to escape from tight parking lots. The car also features forward collision warning alerts if there is any obstacle in the direction of propulsion.

Verdict

Jeep Cherokee can be summed up as well-crafted marvel in exterior loaded with impressively perceptible interior and purely controlled ride. The vehicle will surely prove to be a strong contender in the off roading segment.

Specifications

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe employs a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and two electric motors, one in place of a conventional alternator and the other replacing the torque converter in the transmission. The transmission is the 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic unit. A 400-volt, 17.3 kWh traction battery pack residing under the floor, an Integrated Dual Charging Module (ICDM) that clubs a charger and a DC/DC converter, and a Power Inverter Module (PIM) are the main components of the 4xe plug-in hybrid system.

Drive Modes

The driver can select from three different drive modes, namely Hybrid, Electric, and eSave. The first two are self-explanatory, while in the eSave mode, the vehicle drives using only gas, saving the electricity in the battery pack for later. This mode also offers the option of choosing between Battery Save and Battery Charge. Irrespective of the mode, the vehicle operates as a hybrid when the battery pack nears depletion. Here, the driver can select the level of regenerative braking.

With the battery pack fully charged and the gas tank full, it’s possible to cover a distance of 470 miles (EPA-est.). None of these figures are different from the previous model year.

Charging

The 2023 Grand Cherokee 4xe supports Level 1 (120V AC) and Level 2 (240V AC) charging, and 7.2 kW is its maximum charging rate. Like in the previous model, Level 1 charging could be a time-consuming process of 12 hours. The Jeep Level II (240V) home charger, which Mopar offers in normal and hardwired versions at the same price of USD 619, can charge the plug-in hybrid SUV’s traction battery pack up to six times faster than a typical Level I (120V) charger, in just over two hours.
