Huayra Roadster[]
After 2 years of development, the Huayra Roadster was officially unveiled in the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.
The over-all appearance of the car has changed, with the most obvious being the open top (hence the Roadster name). This part of the vehicle is also its key element. The design of the rear is also different, with new eyelid-like fixed flaps that continue with the design and eventually end on the rear lights. The rear engine cover also has a new shape to adapt to the roadster form and now has now has vents for efficient cooling. The wheels are unique and specifically constructed for the car. The car has conventional doors instead of the Gull-wing doors of the coupé as they are impossible to fit on an open top car.
The vehicle utilises the same twin-turbo M158 V12 engine as the coupé, but now has a total of 764 PS (562 kW; 754 hp) at 6200 rpm and 1,000 N⋅m (740 lb⋅ft) of torque at 2400 rpm. All of this power is delivered to the rear wheels via an all-new 7-speed automatic manual transmission by Xtrac. The car now uses a hydraulic and electronic activation system with carbon synchronizers. Bosch has also contributed in the construction of the car and the car uses their ECU system. The weight is now 70 kilograms lighter, for a total of 1,280 kg (2,820 lb), making it the first roadster lighter than the coupe version. Only 100 will be made, all of which have already been sold. The tyre supplier is Pirelli, with P-Zero tyres. The tyre have a white narrow outline, resembling those of an F1 race car. Pagani has also used a new material for the Roadster called carbon triax, which is a tri-axis fiberglass meshed with carbon-fibre power bands.
Pagani says that the car produces 820 kilograms (1,800 lb) of downforce or 1.8 lateral G-force. However, this figure is unproven, but if true, Pagani will have set a new record.
Drivetrain
There’s was no doubt that the Huayra Roadster would be using the same AMG-sourced, 6.0-liter V-12 as the coupe, but the output was a well kept secret until now. It was rumored that the revised V-12 would crank out 789 horsepower, but it turns out that the AMG-made unit was massaged to deliver 753 horsepower (764 PS) and 738 pound-feet of torque. That’s as much torque as the coupe, to go with 33 extra horses. It’s also more than the BC, which is rated at «only» 739 horsepower.
Needless to say, roadsters are rarely more powerful than coupes, but Pagani has its own ways of making dream come true. And the output pretty much confirms that the Roadster isn’t just a drop-top version of the Huayra, but a new evolution of the supercar.
Besides the extra oomph, the turbines have been developed to provide an immediate throttle response without delay. The dry sump lubrication allows for perfect engine response, even under the most extreme lateral acceleration conditions. What’s more, the V-12 engine is approved for the most restrictive EURO 6b and Carb environment regulations.
Performance figures aren’t yet available, but given the extra power and the lower curb weight, the Roadster should be quicker. And yes, you read that right, the Roadster is lighter than the coupe. Tipping the scales at 2,822 pounds, it’s 176 pounds lighter than the coupe. On the other hand, it’s some 160 pounds heavier than the Huayra BC, but it’s still impressive for a roadster.
All told, while the coupe needs three seconds to hit 60 mph from a standing start, the Roadster could reach the same benchmark in around 2.9 ticks or even less. I expect top speed to be lower than the coupe’s amazing 230 mph, but not by much.
The revised engine mates to the seven-speed automatic transmission developed for the BC model. Built by X-Track, it incorporates a hydraulic and electronic activation system and is combined with new carbon synchronizers, resulting in seamless precision when shifting, thanks also to the development of a new ECU together with Automac. The differential is electronic, with an advanced control system developed in conjunction with Bosch, ensuring the best results in all conditions, from from day to day drivability to track performance.
The weight of entire unit, including the electronic differential, is approximately 40% less than the standard dual-clutch gearbox. The gearbox itself is mounted in a transverse position. This results in a safe understeering response, enhanced comfort and safety for road driving and predictable behavior and control on the track.

COMPETING PERFORMANCE
Under the hood, the LaFerrari is somewhat similar to the Huayra, also using a naturally aspirated V-12 engine. However, the 6.3-liter V-12 is connected to the company’s HY-KERS system, with adds 161 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque and turns the supercar into a mild hybrid. Total output is rated at 950 horsepower and 664 pound-feet, which is a lot more than what the Huayra Roadster is expected to get, but the extra oomph doesn’t necessarily translate into significantly better performance. Specifically, the LaFerrari Aperta needs 2.8 seconds to hit 60 mph on the way to a top speed that is estimated at «over 217 mph,» which should put it on par with the Pagani supercar. There is one thing that sets the LaFerrari apart though, and that’s the ability to run on electricity alone. However, the battery’s capacity is very limited and thus the car’s electric range is only a few miles. Actually, Ferrari has yet to release official data about it.

More aggressive Design – Interior & Exterior
In terms of exterior design, the 2017 Pagani Huayra BC is going to feature a large fixed rear wing which will help it corner at higher speeds than the original. On top of that, the car will be quite a bit lighter due to the fact the rear wing will not need the complex hydraulic system of the previous model.
In the front, instead of the active bumper the car will likely receive an all new larger carbon fiber splitter which will work in tandem with the larger diffuser at the back. Some people also expect unique color combinations as well as new wheels and tires.
Authentic Interior
Inside the cabin, the usual Pagani quality is going to be retained to the BC as well. However, we are likely going to see more high tech features over the original such as a new infotainment unit that will be able to handle a lot more things such as lap times, GPS tracking for circuit usage and even a G-meter. The materials will be changes as well with the BC being expected to come with an Alcantara interior instead of the fully leather one of the Huayra.
Advanced Performance & Specs
Engine wise, the 2017 Pagani Huayra BC is likely going to make use of a newly developed AMG powertrain which will offer not only more power and torque but it will also be more efficient. While the details are still unknown, we expect a very similar 6 liter twin-turbocharged V12 to that found in the Huayra. However, this time around, AMG most likely worked quite a bit on the new engine in order to provide quite a bit more than the original so we do expect the car to offer up to 800 horsepower and 900 lb-ft of torque which would easily make it the most powerful non-hybrid car on the market today.
The engine would likely send all the power to the rear wheels and just like before, the gearbox would be a 7 speed sequential mounted right behind the engine in order to allow it to be mounted right in the middle of the car. There are no official performance numbers just yet but we are pretty sure that it will be faster to 60 MPH and it will have a similar top speed to its lesser sibling.
Also, on top of that, we expect the times on various race-tracks to be better than those posted by the LaFerrari, Porsche 918 or even the McLaren P1 simply because the Huayra BC will be built specifically to do that.

Interior
Pagani didn’t have much to say about the interior, but judging by the photos, it’s pretty much identical to the coupe. The lack of information is not surprising though. Because Pagani offers so many options and most of its customers are looking for a unique car, each example will have something to make it stand out, be it the color of the upholstery, the trim, or bespoke badges and inserts.
Still, most features remained unchanged in the Huayra Roadster, which sports the familiar dashboard with the massive center stack and aviation-inspired A/C vents, the «floating» instrument clusters, the thick, flat-bottom steering wheel, and the race-inspired seats with massive bolstering. As far as materials go, it boasts the best materials the automotive industry has to offer, ranging from the finest Italian leather and soft Alcantara to carbon-fiber trim and polished aluminum.
Upholstery color combinations should be endless and customers will be able to order just about any color they desire, including hues to match the flashiest exterior colors available. The removable top will provide the thrills of driving fast with the wind blowing through your hair, while also enjoying the roar of the massive V-12 engine behind the seats.
THE COMPETITION
Ferrari interiors are known to be among the most exquisite in the world and to some extent, the LaFerrari’s should be on par with the Huayra’s. Maranello uses the same fine Italian leathers, carefully selected Alcantara, and expensive trim made from aluminum and carbon-fiber in order to combine the traditional Ferrari luxury with race-inspired elements. The LaFerrari actually leans a bit more on the racing factor through its flat-bottom and flat-top steering wheel, extremely bolstered seats, and basic center console and stack are devoid of any unnecessary buttons and knobs. By comparison, the Huayra feels a bit more exotic and up-market. It’s not that the LaFerrari lacks something important — it’s also available with numerous customizable features — but the Huayra’s interior makes me think of luxury yachts, whereas the LaFerrari’s has racing written all over it.
Other Competitors
As mentioned earlier, although there are many supercar manufacturers making exclusive vehicles like the Huayra, almost all the examples that made headlines in recent years are no longer available. Supercars like the Ferrari LaFerrari, Porsche 918 Spyder, and McLaren P1 are sold out, while the Koenigsegg Agera was discontinued in 2016. This leaves us with very few options to discuss. But here goes…
Bugatti Chiron Grand Sport
While not yet confirmed for production, the Chiron Grand Sport will become reality by end of the decade. Essentially a targa version of the Chiron, the Grand Sport will replace the similar version of the iconic Veyron, most likely for the 2020 model. Much like the Huayra Roadster, the Chiron Grand Sport will be heavily based on the coupe and use the same exterior design save for the removable top and minor nips and tucks here and there. Although gifted with many new features, the Chiron bears a close resemblance to its predecessor on the outside. The same can’t be said about the cockpit, which has been redesigned from the ground up. However, Bugatti continues to offer the finest materials out there, infinite customization options, and a fit and finish that can be matched only by the most exclusive luxury automakers. Under the hood, the Grand Sport will be identical to the coupe, meaning it will get its juice from the upgraded, quad-turbo, 8.0-liter W-16 generating 1,479 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of torque. The 0 to 60 mph sprint is likely to be achieved in around 2.6 seconds, while top speed could be rated at around 240 mph. Granted, this will make the Grand Sport quicker and faster than the Huayra Roadster, but it will also be more expensive. With pricing for the Chiron set at €2.4 million (about $2.53 million) before options, the Grand Sport will most likely fetch in excess of €2.8 million (around $2.95 million).

Lamborghini Aventador S
The Aventador SV Roadster with its 740-horsepower engine and limited-edition status would make a great competitor for the Huayra Roadster, but just like the LaFerrari Aperta, it’s already sold out. So if you’re a big fan of the «raging bull,» you’re going to have to settle with the standard model, which was recently updated as the Aventador S. The bad news about this supercar is that it’s not as exotic and exclusive as the Huyara. However, this Lambo has everything it takes to give the Pagani a run for its money performance-wise. For starters, it’s also a supercar of the old-school variety under the hood, featuring a naturally aspirated, 6.5-liter V-12. Second, the mill cranks out no fewer than 730 horsepower, which enables it to hit 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and a top speed rated at 217 mph. It may turn up to be tad slower than the Huayra Roadster, but with a price below $500,000, it’s quite a bargain by comparison.

About the Pagani Huayra
The highlights include its acceleration (ludicrous), traction (amazing), steering (old school wonderful), braking (immense) and its grip mid corner. Arguably the most exclusive, best looking, best driving supercar there has ever been, Veyron included.
The body of the Huayra is once again a showcase of cutting edge automotive technology. The Huayra chassis has a new titanium laced secret. Already seen on the final Zondas, this ‘Carbon-Titanium’ tub is as strong as conventional carbon-fibre but the added titanium gives the structure some elasticity in one direction, making it less likely to crack on impact.
Just like the Zonda, the Huayra features an interior that is a pure work of art. It is a combination of the finest leathers and lightweight materials like carbon-fiber and brushed aluminum. Many of the details are exquisitely shaped, including the fact that ever nut and bolt on the Huayra has the Pagani insignia on it. You can see that the carbon weave runs in the same direction, even between the doors and body, that is just amazing. The cabin is a leather, carbon fiber and aluminum cocoon of obsession, just check out some of the images below for proof.
Thanks to the extensive use of lightweight materials and careful engineering, the completed Huayra tips the scales at just 1,350 kg and with over 750hp you are talking Veyron levels of performance and it is rear wheel drive, unlike the Veyron. The performance has been described by some automotive journalists as “violent is the best word to sum up a trip from 1500 to 6500 RPM” or “the engine is just phenomenally powerful, and when it’s delivering the full 737lp ft of torque, it scrambles your brain”. And the compliments keep coming; «Nothing will ever be the same again, not once you’ve experience the ferocious Pagani Huayra» and «a waver of turbo boost sneaks up from behind you, hooks its fingernails into your nostrils and pulls your head back hard».
The experts had a lot to say at the time: «The Huayra feels properly fast and engaging, yet it manages to deliver a stable, supple ride without feeling «old mannish.» The throttle response from the AMG-sourced 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 is excellent, but the seven-speed single-clutch flappy-paddle gearbox has its fair share of low-speed refinement issues and the steering is chastised for being a bit slow and heavy.» EVO Magazine (Jethro Bovingdon) and «Supreme performance and astonishing looks, there was only ever one contender for the Hypercar of the year award. It is not going to revolutionize personal transport, reinvent motorsport or solve the looming energy crisis. It is a machine so unlikely ever to be a real, material presence in most of our lives that it may as well be a unicorn. And there it is: the Pagani Huayra. Perhaps unicorn is the best way to describe it» Top Gear (Richard Hammond)
What did the original Pagani Huayra have to offer?
In 2011, Pagani introduced the original Huayra, which, according to Top Speed, was intended to replace its previous supercar, the Zonda. Featuring a motor designed for Pagani by Mercedes-Benz, the Huayra C9 offered a whopping 720 hp and 738 lb-ft. of torque.
The car also featured a seven-speed transmission and emissions levels acceptable even for European standards.
With all that engine power going for it, it wasn’t surprising that the Huayra could go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds. Not only that, but it could also reach speeds up to 220 mph. And yet, Pagani wasn’t content stopping there.
Pricing
Priced from $1.4 million, the Huyara coupe was already in the «if you have to ask, then you can’t afford it» category, but the sticker was just a fraction of what customers actually paid with all the extra features. With so many options on the table, a Huayra actually fetched close to or even more than $2 million. With that in mind, and given the fact that roadsters are usually more expensive, it’s no surprise that the Huayra drop-top costs €2.28 million before VAT and options, which converts to around $2.41 million as of February 2017. It might sound like a lot, but the fact that all 100 units of the Huayra Roaster are already accounted for proves that there’s a strong market for bespoke supercars.
COMPETING PRICES
The LaFerrari Aperta’s pricing is still a mystery several months after the car was unveiled, but with production limited to only 150 examples (versus the coupe’s 499-unit run), it’s safe to assume that it costs more than the standard model. Previous reports claimed that the Aperta would cost as much as two LaFerrari coupes, which means around $3.4 million, but Ferrari is likely asking less for one, before options of course. I’d say that the Aperta is priced anywhere between $2 million and $2.5 million, but the issue here isn’t if you can afford it or not. The supercar was sold out before Ferrari unveiled, which basically means you can’t buy one from the company even if you have the money.
2017 Pagani Huayra BC Price & Release date
There is still no official release date available for now but the car has been spied testing in numerous occasions and last time, it was wearing a rather tight camouflage and it looked to be production ready. Just like with the Huayra, the car is expected to cost well over one million dollars, most likely closer to $3 million for the BC which is only going to be built in 20 units.
All of these will receive some special attention from Pagani such as unique numbering, a lot of changes on the outside as well as a slightly sportier interior. The engine on the other hand is likely going to be identical to that found on the upcoming Cabriolet.
The major competitor is the upcoming Bugatti Chiron.

Pagani Huayra Engine
A glance at the spec sheet will amaze you. The Huayra specs include 720 hp and 737 lb-ft of torque along. A featherweight body of Carbotanium makes it a force to be reckoned with. The fact that the standard Huayra can nearly match the astonishing figures of its racing predecessor is proof that company founder Horacio Pagani has indeed advanced the game with this new model. He grew up watching Mercedes dominate tracks around the world, so he turned to their AMG division for a hand-built V12. The Pagani Huayra engine’s block and heads are Pagani’s own design, made thick enough to support the rear suspension, much like an F1 car. One man, one engine is what he demands, so one master engine builder is responsible for everything from the turbos to the oil pan. That is why the Pagani Huayra horsepower is consistent and composed.
Performance[]
The Huayra uses a twin-turbo, V12 engine developed by Mercedes-AMG specially for the Huayra. The Huayra’s 6.0-litre engine, the M158, produces 730 PS (720 hp, 539 kW) and 738 lb·ft (1,000 N·m) of torque. Its top speed is about 238 mph (383 km/h) and it has a 0-60 acceleration time of 2.8 seconds. Using Pirelli tires, the Pagani Huayra is capable of withstanding 1.66 g of lateral acceleration at speeds of up to 230 mph (370 km/h).
The Pagani Huayra uses a seven-speed sequential gearbox and a single disc clutch. The choice not to use a dual-clutch in an oil bath was due to the increase in weight of over 70 kg (154 lb), thus negating any advantage of the faster gear changes in a double-clutch transmission. As a result, the entire transmission weighs 96 kg (212 lb).
The car is equipped with Brembo brake calipers, rotors and pads. The calipers have four pistons in front and four in the rear. The rotors are drilled carbon ceramic, 380 mm (15.0 in) in diameter and 34 mm (1.3 in) thick.
Pagani Huayra has a power to weight ratio of 1.85 kg (4.08 lb) per horsepower.
Engine
Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division provides the engine of the Huayra which is hand-built. The 5,980 cc, twin-turbo, 60° AMG M158V12, has been designed at the request of Pagani to reduce turbo lag and improve response, realized with smaller turbos, a different intercooler configuration and re-programmed ECU settings.
Like many high-performance cars, the Huayra uses dry sump lubrication. This has several key benefits including guaranteeing oil flow even when the car is subjected to extreme lateral acceleration, preventing «oil surge» which allows the engine to operate more efficiently while the lack of an oil pan allows mounting the engine lower, lowering the car’s center of gravity and improving handling. The fuel consumption of the Huayra is 10 mpg (23 l/100 km) in city and 14 mpg (17 l/100 km) in highway (EPA testing).
A water / oil heat exchanger reduces engine warm-up times on cold days and helps maintain a stable temperature for refrigerants and lubricants.
To minimize the use of pipes and fittings (and the overall weight of the vehicle), the expansion tank is mounted directly on the engine. Intercooler fins act as an expansion tank circuit at low temperatures.
The titanium exhaust system was designed and built by MHG-Fahrzeugtechnik. Hydroformed joints were developed to reduce back pressure and ensure a free flow exhaust. Titanium reduces the weight of the exhaust system while the Inconel silencers improve reliability in the most exposed parts of the exhaust at high temperatures. The entire system weighs less than 10 kg (22 lb).

Pagani Huayra Design
While the performance specs are harder-edged, the styling is anything but. The Huayra exaggerates the best features of its predecessor, but the shape is far softer, more mature, and more feminine. The Huayra soothes with its gently contoured flanks and friendlier face. Where aerodynamics previously relied heavily on sharp creases and right angles, active aero measures now allow for a more organic shape that’s more modern and pleasing. Open the hood, doors, and the rear deck lid and move back. The Pagani Huayra has a design as beautiful as a lotus blossom, along with a clear view of all its formidable hardware. No matter if the Huayra is opened up or closed, it looks beautiful no matter what. If you see one in person, you’ll understand.
Pagani
