Двигатель
количество цилиндров
8
Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition (2014)
Stop-Start
Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition (2014)
Interior Highlights
Tundra’s seats are big and roomy, but we thought they could use a bit more cushioning. Controls are large, logically arranged, and easy to figure out. We could even change the radio station without the owner’s manual. The center console is huge and perfect for working in the field because it can easily hold a laptop. A laptop computer will fit perfectly on the console as well.
This 1794 Edition came with brown leather seats with cream-colored stitching, and wood trim on the dash, door panels, steering wheel, and gear shifter. It also featured special 1794 floor mats front and back.
The big CrewMax offers seating for five with leg space for taller riders in every seat. The backseats fold up easily with one pull of the handle, opening up to a large cargo area that’s ready to carry those bigger work items. Toyota listened and opted for the folding seats over the tilt and recline feature. Now you can carry tools or other valuable items you’d prefer to have inside and not leave exposed in the open bed.
BBQ Sushi
On paper, the 1794 looks like it could belong with the Fords and the Rams. It features woodgrain accents on the steering wheel, door panels and centre console, saddle tan leather seats with suede inserts and unique badging, chrome-clad 20-inch alloy wheels, a huge chromed front grille and bumper caps as well as an available Sunset Bronze Mica paint job, which my test vehicle came with.
Unlike its competitors, the 1794 Tundra only comes in one body style, the 4×4 CrewMax with the shortest bed available, which measures 5.5 feet (1695 mm). Drivetrain-wise, the 1794 Tundra still packs Toyota’s 5.7-litre V8 as well as a six-speed automatic. This combo works well enough, with more than enough power to accelerate sprightly and can tow up to 9490 lbs. (4305 kg). Fuel consumption is abysmal, but that’s to be expected in a Tundra.

The Toyota Tundra Platinum 1794 Edition starts at $57,785 before freight and delivery charges, less than the Ford F-150 King Ranch ($66,199) and the Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn ($62,495).
So is it worth the price? Well…
1794 Edition Features
At the top of the heap, the CrewMax 1794 Edition comes with distinctive styling elements, LED daytime running lights, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, heated and ventilated front seats, driver-seat memory functions, and a 12-speaker JBL sound system.
Our 1794 Edition tester came with the optional TRD Off-Road package adding 18-inch TRD wheels, off-road tires, trail-tuned shock absorbers, skid plates, and tow hooks (included with 1794 Edition). Other features included the power moonroof ($850), TRD performance exhaust ($1,100), and TRD rear sway bar ($299). Total MSRP including destination: $54,892.
“I Like Big Trucks, and I Cannot Lie!”
I couldn’t resist making a parody of the old rap song but it’s the first thing that popped into my mind when I first saw the 2017 Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition Crew Max in person. The Tundra is a luxury truck with a huge personality and presence and this 1794 special edition is impressive on the road. It’s definitely a head turner.
And, this edition was built with Texas in mind. Toyota moved its North American headquarters to Plano, Texas recently and is putting more Lone Star State in everything they do. Including the name of this truck: it’s built in San Antonio in an assembly plant on the site of a former ranch that was founded in 1794, which became the name of this Texas-themed pick up.
And if you’re thinking of the Toyota Tundra as a used truck, make sure to check out our rundown at the end, where we evaluate how it fares as it grows older.

Fuel economy | 4/10 Good fuel consumption numbers are not the reason why you’d buy a Tundra. |

Infotainment | 6/10 Toyota’s infotainment system isn’t the best in the business, but does a decent job. |
Driving | 7/10 I must admit I enjoyed the noise and the size of the Tundra, and it received quite a few positive comments on its looks. |
Overall | 5/10 If you want a Texas-themed truck, you may need to look somewhere else. The 1794 Edition might be built in the Lone Star state, but it won’t make you feel like a Gentleman Farmer. |

I have to admit my family wanted me to keep the Tundra after my test drive. But there are two things/features I’d love to see added at this price point. I love to see a heads up display (that shows your speed and/or navigation) and push-button-start added. I know, I know pickups don’t normally have these two features but at $51,000, that’s a serious investment and it should have all the bells and whistles (in my opinion).

If you or the family business needs a new pickup truck for daily hauls and or towing, you should strongly consider the Toyota Tundra 1794 Crew Max edition. You’ll love the comfortable and luxurious interior and the rugged durability the Tundra offers. You’ll also love that it’s sporty and elegant enough to drive to a special event. After all, it’s a good looking truck!
This Luxury Truck Is Not Dad’s Old Pick-up Truck
At first glance you instantly think, is that really a Toyota?! Yes, this big boy is a Toyota and it’s a luxury pickup truck. I know ‘luxury’ and ‘pickup truck’ aren’t usually synonymous but Toyota has changed that forever with the Tundra 1794 Edition Crew Max. It has all the luxury you’d expect in a high end sedan coupled with the rugged durability you need in a pickup.
THE TUNDRA’S STRONG GRILL SAYS HEAVY DUTY PICKUP FOR SURE. PHOTO: KIRSTIN FULLER
The exterior is your normal rugged, durable pickup truck, while the interior is all luxury sedan. The 1794 edition comes with a beautiful brown, more bronze/copper leather interior with suede accents. Yes, suede! The front seats are 12-way heated and vented (cooled in the summer) power seats. Another favorite feature borrowed from luxury sedans is the dual climate control which comes in handy for those blistering hot days.

The overall impression is of comfort and more agility than you have any right to expect from a vehicle that weighs 2.6 tonnes. The twin-turbo produces a peak 389 horsepower, 479 lb-ft of torque, and does so with virtually no turbo-lag.
Transmitted seamlessly through a smooth 10-speed transmission and that i-FORCE hybrid boost, the Tundra’s V6 enables you to pass with confidence, and tow up to 4,940 kilograms. Ventilated brakes ensure there is fade-free stopping power.
Its drive modes include AWD low and AWD high ranges. In the relatively fuel-saving 2WD mode, we were able to average fuel consumption in the 12 l/100 km range.
WHAT IS THE MAX TONGUE LOAD OF A TUNDRA?
The tongue load is the amount of weight that can be exerted on a trailer hitch.
This value is 10-15% of the total trailer weight for most trailers.
Toyota specifies that for all of their engines, a tongue weight of 11% should not be exceeded. That means a max towing capacity of 10,200 lbs can only have a tongue weight of 1,122 lbs.
In addition, you should not tow above 1000 lbs on any 2019 Tundra without a trailer with a braking system.
Similarly, a trailer weight over 5,000 lbs requires a weight-distributing hitch.
How can you make sure you don’t exceed this value?
You can ensure this by weighing your trailer’s tongue weight. There are multiple ways to do this, which I outlined in the article: What is trailer tongue weight? & How to Measure It
Driving Dynamics
The first thing we noticed after getting behind the wheel was the throaty exhaust note. The optional TRD performance dual exhaust system brings the 5.7-liter V8 to life. We found ourselves jumping hard on the accelerator this week just to hear the sound inside the cabin. The 5.7-liter V8 impresses, thanks its generous torque output and smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission.
We had a snow storm hit the mountains this week and shifted from 2H to 4H with the knob on the Tundra’s dash. The 4W Demand 4WD system instantly shifted into action and we never lost traction as we moved from dry pavement to a snow-covered highway in less than a few miles. On the open road, Tundra gives the driver a feeling of confidence and security in the extreme elements with its size, commanding view of the road, and all-terrain winter tires. We had no problem passing slower traffic that was having more difficulty with the slick roads.
Ride quality is reasonably comfortable, though rough pavement and the dirt roads leading to our house produced impacts beyond the normal range. During our urban driving, the Tundra handled well in heavy city traffic. The rear backup camera came in handy as we parked the long CrewMax in a tight parking space.
HOW TO DETERMINE HOW MUCH YOUR TUNDRA CAN ACTUALLY TOW
Toyota states that the 2019 Tundra can tow between 6,500 and 10,200 lbs under the right conditions and is adequately equipped. However, the exact amount you can tow at any given time is slightly different.
Max towing capacity is calculated by subtracting the curb weight from the GCWR, which is essentially what is reported by Toyota. However, there may be other factors that will limit your capacity even more.
This means that the total weight of a truck plus a trailer at any point cannot exceed the GCWR (found in the owner’s manual). The e-brochure lists that the GCWR is between 14,000 – 16,000 lbs for all trim levels, but the manual shows varying ratings.
If you add any passenger or cargo weight, you will need to subtract this from the towing capacity to determine the actual towing load allowed.
Don’t forget that you will need to consider whether or not your truck has exceeded its payload capacity with this load.
Does this confuse you? I run through an explicit example of how you need to know both the payload and towing capacity to determine if you have safe driving conditions in the following article: How to Calculate Towing Capacity.
Here lies the problem
When you actually sit inside the 2016 Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition, the presentation is underwhelming, and that woodgrain trim is unconvincing. The plastics are flimsy, as are some of the knobs. I get that a truck’s interior isn’t everything, but when Ford and Ram’s offerings are much better looking and feel much more upscale, you start wondering why somebody that wants a Western-themed truck would go to a Toyota dealership.
Driving the Tundra isn’t exactly a revelation, either: the steering is very light (even for a pickup) and the rear suspension is harsh, causing the truck to bounce around on bumpy gravel roads. Again, you can’t fault a pickup truck for not having sports-car handling, but both the F-150 and the Ram 1500 are miles ahead.
The Toyota Tundra isn’t a bad vehicle, but I think the 1794 Edition tries to step into a segment where it has no business being; the next iteration of this Japanese pickup might cure some of its problems, but for now, there is simply better elsewhere.

Cool Convenience Features
The Tundra 1794 edition had two convenience features (that’s what we call them) that were pretty cool. Mirrors are an important fixture on a car and people are always knocking them off/cracking them while parking. I’m always pushing mine in manually to save them. The Tundra doesn’t have an app for that but it does have a button! The Tundra sits up high so it really didn’t need a button to move the mirrors, but I loved the option and hitting that button to pull in/extending my mirrors quickly was fun.
CONVENIENCE AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON, WELL, 2 BUTTONS. PHOTO: KIRSTIN FULLER
The other convenience feature I absolutely loved was that the rear window could be lowered. Now the Tundra 1794 edition had a power sunroof but if you wanted the breeze to hit the back of your neck, well there’s a switch for that too. You gotta love convenience!
Spacious and Tech Filled Cabin
As mentioned, I fell head over heels in love with this pickup’s luxurious interior but I also loved its technology and convenience features.

For buyers who will also need this vehicle for a road trip, there’s definitely enough room in the Tundra for a family of four to ride comfortably. The 1794 edition comes with the usual technology package you’d expect. This package includes touch screen, back-up camera and a state-of-the-art navigation system. Another feature borrowed from the luxury car scene (that we love) is the fabulous JBL audio system. You’ll love listening to your favorite tunes on these premium speakers.

Features & Options
The 2018 Toyota Tundra Crewmax 1794 Edition ($50,130) comes loaded with standard features like foglights, variable intermittent windshield wipers, and an upgraded tech interface that includes a 7-inch touchscreen, HD and satellite radio, traffic information, and navigation. The CrewMax adds a power-opening rear window and an overhead console.
Up front it gets bucket seats, leather upholstery, an upgraded power driver’s seat, a power-adjustable passenger seat, a center console (with storage and console shifter), and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Our tester came with an auto-dimming rearview mirror, 20-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, movable tie-down cleats, and dual-zone climate control.

This Texas-themed version includes semi-aniline leather upholstery, a digital rear-view mirror, head up display, ambient lighting, active noise control, memory steering wheel, triple beam LED headlamps, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, a panoramic view monitor, a 12-speaker JBL audio system, a five-setting Drive Mode Select system, rain sensing wipers, and a trailer backup guide system.
The cabin is rich in saddle-coloured leather and woodgrain trim. The power-adjustable front seats offer the firm support needed for long journeys, and the massive rear seat in the Crewcab enables even the tallest passengers to stretch out in total comfort.

The instrument layout features a massive 36-centimetre infotainment screen, head-up speed display, generous 32-cm instrument cluster with an endless menu-driven variety of useful information. HVAC and safety switches are banked together under that huge infotainment screen and are relatively intuitive, especially if you’re already familiar with Toyotas.
Toyota’s Star Safety System includes ABS, stability control, traction control, lane departure alert and radar cruise. Its new multimedia information and entertainment system is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also features new touchscreens and a Human Machine Interface that employs sight, touch, and voice activation.
Here’s a full look inside the 2022 Tundra interior, without the Texas flair.
THE BEST WAY TO CHECK TUNDRA TOWING AND PAYLOAD CAPACITY!
The information here should be used as a guide to finding the towing capacity of your vehicle.
To do so, you will need to find the GVWR and GCWR of your vehicle.
The GVWR will be located on the vehicle certification label on the inside of the driver’s side door.
The GCWR can also be found in this document but you must know:
- your engine
- your cab size
- your bed size
- the drive (4×2 or 4×4)
Your engine can be found by looking under the hood. There should be some type of label identifying the name.
You also can use the VIN decoder on this site: driving-tests.org to identify the specs of your vehicle.
After you have these numbers, you can then calculate the towing and payload capacity.
I walk through how to do this in How is Towing Capacity Calculated? And there’s even a calculator!
