Audi Sport says the R8 could be a hybrid, not electric. A third-generation R8 seems possible, and perhaps with the power of a V10 hybrid.

Audi Sport plans to double its sales by 2023. Much of that growth will come from branching out into new markets; the new RS6 Avant is available for the first time in the United States, for example. But what is the electrification plan? Where did the R8 go next? We sat down with managing director Oliver Hoffman to try and figure it out.

“No decision has been made regarding the next-generation R8 technology and platform. But with the next generation, we have to comply with all the regulations around the world. That means it will be a car with electrified parts. But the current model is the base model for our customers’ racing and we will have to meet that demand in the future.”

A few things to digest here. Most importantly, there will be a third-generation Audi R8. However, the current R8 hasn’t sold as well as the first-generation cars. There is more competition in the market, the higher the price point.

Sales have been hovering around the 1,200 mark every year in Europe. Slow sales have placed more emphasis on customer R8 GT3 and GT4 race cars, which use more than 50 percent of built-in parts and competed in more than 700 races last year.

What Hoffmann is suggesting is that the new R8 should honor that commitment to racing. Which likely means hybrid rather than full electric.

Audi is making the entry-level R8 V10 RWD a permanent fixture of its lineup for 2021, having previously offered it as a limited edition model.
