Not the Fastest, But The 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse Is No Snail

via consumer guide

The 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse had a manual transmission with 195 horsepower and all-wheel drive. The GS Turbo and GSX were also equipped with turbocharged engines. The Eclipse GSX regularly won magazine comparison tests and landed on best-of lists. The model also accelerates rest to 60 mph in 9.3 seconds and a quarter-mile in a time of 17 seconds. Dimension-wise, the model is 172.4 inches long, 66.9 inches wide and 52 inches high.

According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that had won 26 races. Notably, the 2014 model of the car held the record for the world’s fastest four-cylinder. Also, while the 1990 design was not a convertible, but was still a sports car, a convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.

Origins[]

Mitsubishi’s experience with sports cars starts in the early 1980s with the development and sale of the Mitsubishi Starion. Up until this point, Mitsubishi Motors had sold cars to the American market rebadged as Chryslers, Dodges and Plymouths. The Starion, similarly sold as the Chrysler Conquest, offered performance and features on-par with sports cars offered by Japanese makers with more experience in performance motoring. The Starion’s main competitors were among the largest of the Japanese sports cars: the Toyota Supra and the Nissan 300ZX.

During the Starion’s production run (1982-1990), Mitsubishi had no other true sports car offerings for the American market. At the same time (specifically in 1986), Chrysler was discontinuing their Laser sports coupe, which was a rebadged Dodge Daytona.

Mitsubishi Motors and Chrysler founded a new production division, Diamond Star Motors (DSM) in October 1985. The DSM plant was situated in Normal, Illinois and eventually produced cars bound primarily for the American market. The first cars to roll off the lines at this facility were the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, and the Plymouth Laser.

Criticisms[]

  • «The liftover height, while not much higher than that of the average trunk, presents a fairly thick rear bulkhead, requiring a back-straining lean to heft items up, over and into the cargo area.» — New Car Test Drive
  • » barely there. Even average-height riders will sit tall enough to bump the hatchback glass.» — USA Today
  • «The Eclipse also burns more Exxon and Arco. After 300 miles our fuel card reported 15 mpg.» — Car and Driver
  • «If you are a dyed-in-the-wool performance addict who demands the most precise handling possible accompanied by 300 horsepower under the hood, this car may not deliver on your dream.» — Kelley Blue Book
  • «I’m no physics major, but all that weight — distributed 61 percent front/39 percent rear — along with front-wheel drive, soft springs, too much body roll and all-season tires (that start squealing in protest long before they should) do not a sports car make.» — Yoda

The Mitsubishi Eclipse: Witness A Four-Generation Wonder

via Japanese Nostalgic Car

Built in the United States at a factory in Illinois, designed at Mitsubishi Motors North America Design Studio, and introduced in 1990, the Mitsubishi Eclipse is a two-door front-wheel-drive sports coupe that came in four different generations from 1989 to 2011. It is noteworthy that each generation was a modification or improvement of the past.

The first-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse, of which the 1990 design is a part, ranks as one of the best values among small sports coupes. Another in the category is the 1995 BMW M3. The first generation Eclipse was marketed as an entry to mid-level four-cylinder sports coupe segment. It was available in four trim levels: Eclipse, Eclipse GS, Eclipse GS-T (Turbo), and Eclipse GSX.

The 1990 Eclipse is the first generation and was undoubtedly or most likely (depending on one’s perspective) the most loved by enthusiasts.

It underwent minor styling changes during its production; the 1992–1994 models have updated sheet metal and are easily distinguishable from earlier model years. The most notable is that the 1990-1991 models have pop-up headlights, whereas 1992-1994 models have exposed aerodynamic headlights. The Eclipse was revised for the 1995 model year as the second generation.

Mitsubishi Eclipse

Details of the fourth generation Eclipse were revealed during late 2003 and 2004, and the car was shown at the 2005 Detroit Auto Show. Features of the new model include a 263 hp (193.9 kW) 3.8 L MIVEC V6 and a 165 hp (123 kW) 2.4 L I4, both derived from the 2004+ Mitsubishi PS platform family, with which the Eclipse shares many mechanical components. Like the 2004 Galant, the new Eclipse is FWD only, although a concept model has been produced by Mitsubishi and Ralliart with an AWD platform, the 4G63 engine from the Lancer Evolution, and more aggressive body styling with carbon fibre. The V6 produces 263 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.

The fourth-generation Spyder (convertible) Eclipse will be released for the 2006 model year at the North American International Auto Show.
