Noble m600 prototype (2009) review

2011 noble m600 specs, pictures & engine review

Noble M600 Specifications, Photo Gallery, & History

At the 2009 Goodwood Rivival, Noble will unveil the M600 Supercar. This mid engine design uses a steel tube chassis to support a 4.4-liter V8. The body is made from carbon fibre and is an evolution of previous styles from Noble.

The M600 engine uses a 4439 cc 60-degree Yamaha-derived Volvo B8444S V8 engine which is also used in the Volvo XC90 and S80, but with twin Garrett turbochargers equipped with variable boost. This allows the occupants to choose from 450 bhp (336 kW; 456 PS) (Road setting, 0.6 bar pressure), 550 bhp (410 kW; 558 PS) (Track setting, 0.8 bar) and 650 bhp (485 kW; 659 PS) (Race setting, 1.0 bar) through the use of a switch in the interior. The engine also features electronic fuel injection via a Motec M600 and Injector Dynamics ID725’s. It has a compression ratio of 9.50:1. It uses an Oerlikon Graziano transaxle six-speed manual gearbox and has the RPM redline set at 7,000.

Noble Intended The M600 To Rival Cars Like The Ferrari F40

Via: Noble

«This is a car meant to deliver a clean and unfiltered driving experience in which you are completely in control,» Noble managing director Peter Boutwood stated. The driving sensation the M600 aimed for is more akin to a Ferrari F40 or a McLaren F1 than to more current, ‘civilized’ supercars.

The M600 provides nothing for the driver but the results of his own skills.

The M600 features fixed-rate dampers, a fixed-ratio steering system, Alcon brakes with iron discs that have minimal servo assistance so that they have plenty of feel and are simple to modulate. The car also has 60/40 rear weight distribution for the best possible handling performance.

The M600 is a true driver’s car thanks to a switchable traction control system and the lack of driver assistance features like ESP and ABS. The package also includes a standard six-speed manual gearbox without a semi-automatic option.

And when you put your foot firmly to the floor?

You’ll laugh out loud. There’s the briefest of pauses if you’re low down in the rev range as the two turbos gather themselves together, then the M600 hurls you at the horizon. At low speeds it’ll accelerate with the same venom as a lightweight like a Caterham or Ariel, but keep going and it’ll leave them behind. Gaps in the traffic that would be suicidal in anything else suddenly become utterly feasible, and double the speed limit is easily obtainable after a few seconds of sustained acceleration.

It only lacks a little aural drama: there’s a deep-chested V8 rumble, lots of turbo whoosh and then wastegate chatter when you lift off, but it doesn’t make your spine tingle like a flat-plane crank V8 or singing V12.

The other downsides are that the M600’s pedals are slightly offset to the left and set within a snug footwell, and the brakes need a serious shove to get working. Blame the minute amount of servo assistance on the latter – though there’s still immense stopping power and lots of feel on offer – but Noble is aiming the M600 at owners who don’t want electronic nannies taking car of everything so it might be part of the appeal. As will the lack of ABS.

Nevertheless, our test drive in the Noble was only brief, and conducted on tight and twisty Leicestershire country roads, but it was enough to discover that the M600 has brilliant steering, a beautifully composed ride and the performance to leave everything else on the road behind.

So how does the Noble M600 drive?

Brilliantly. The clutch is relatively light and the mountain of torque makes pulling away from standstill easy. The ‘box – a manual six-speed unit from Italian transmission company Graziano – isn’t Civic-slick but it’s not obtrusive either, and is as smooth as you can expect when you remember it’s been built to deal with 604lb ft.

Short shift to second and the M600 will happily pootle along at under 2000rpm, while you take in the wonderfully communicative steering and compliant ride. The tiny leather wheel provides lovely, direct feedback from the front wheels, letting you place the M600 accurately and easily. There’s no kickback either, and although it won’t jiggle and chatter in your hands like a Lotus’s helm, the lack of constant fidgeting actually makes it a less tiring drive than Hethel’s finest.

The ride is smooth too; less harsh than something like an Aston DBS in Sport mode, and with the compliance needed to deal with bumpy British roads. There’s also lots of grip, thanks to huge 19in (front) and 20in (rear) Michelin Pilot Sports.

From Autocar Noble M600 Review

Noble M600 is an excellent machine, but is it enough to tempt McLaren, Lamborghini or Ferrari buyers? There are so many adjectives that can be used to describe the Noble M600’s astounding performance that it would be easy to get completely carried away. So instead we’re going to let the numbers do most of the talking.

See Full Noble M600 Image Gallery

Take, for example, what it can do in fourth gear, and from as little as 40mph. In most supercars you need to wind many more revs into the crank before anything interesting happens, but in the M600 it takes just 2.2sec to go from 40-60mph in cog four. Even in a McLaren F1, which has no turbochargers to spin up, it takes 2.3sec.

Its surprising ABS isn’t offered. Noble says it would rob the brakes of feel. Drop to third and the M600 is closer to full boost, which is why it’ll cover the same increment in a mere 1.4sec. But if you really want to feel the full effects, hook second. That’s when the M600 feels at its most wild, generating just enough traction to catapult itself from 40-60mph in an incredible 1.1sec.

More impressive is the Noble’s lack of off-boost lethargy in the higher gears. Even when pottering along in sixth, the M600 is well mannered enough to pull cleanly from under 1000rpm. Its cause is helped further by the light clutch and a swift, precise gearchange.

From a standing start the M600 is actually quicker than the F1 to 30mph (1.6sec vs 1.8sec), but due to the fact that during the two gearchanges needed to reach 100mph, you have to lift slightly to avoid lighting up the rear tyres, it’s slightly slower to 100mph. The Noble is still only 1.8sec behind at 200mph (29.8sec). This is perhaps the clearest indication of all as to how rapid the M600 really is.

And what of the brakes? Apart from the system’s lack of anti-lock, they’re excellent, not just in their outright power but also for feel from high speeds. On the road, a touch too much pedal effort is required at lower speeds, but the trade-off comes when you’re going for it, when the feel is fantastic. A big black mark for the lack of ABS, however, which would give the driver a welcome safety net.

The Interior Of The Noble M600 Is Modifiable To Satisfy The Needs Of Its Buyers

Via: Noble

As standard features, the car’s cabin includes twin hide upholstery and gloss carbon-fiber trim. Customers have the option to choose upholstery made of leather, suede, or Alcantara, as well as knurled wood trim and wool carpeting.

Although the M600 shares some parts with Jaguar and Aston Martin cars, the switches and instrumentation are unique to the M600. The vehicle has a steering wheel and driver’s seat that one can adjust, and the pedals are offset to the left. To ensure a comfortable driving position, Noble modifies the pedals to the owner’s preferences.

The engine power control knob, which resembles Ferrari’s Manettino dial (Road, Track, and Race) and also allows the driver to select between various engine power outputs and associated turboboost pressure, is a feature found in the cabin.

On the dashboard, one can locate the main knob in front of the shifter knob. The restricted traction control system, which is there to prevent oversteer, is turned on by a traction control switch. Noble designed the cabin with the driver in mind and is based on the Ferrari F40. As a result, it does away with climate control and modern infotainment systems.

2011 Noble M600

The Noble M600 gained notoriety before it was released because of the lengthy time before it was built. Its first edition Noble M600 is the only supercar that was not designed to follow the trend of supercars by having a futuristic or noticeable looks. It has a simple design which proves to people that simplicity could be trendy. Through that, this car gained a lot of respect to many car lovers.

History

The M600 debuted on June 23, 2011. Despite the hype from people, it maintained a low key profile. After all, its manufacturer is not known for extravagant reveals of its products. Although it started obscure, the Noble M600 sale is growing constantly because of the increase in number of positive ratings it gets from most of its users.

Exterior & Interior

The exterior of this supercar is a completely laminated carbon body. Its shape and design will remind a person looking at it with the styles of some of the common cars of today. This type of style along with fully furnished black color of the Noble M600 is what convinced people that it is truly on the level of high class cars.

Moreover, the interior of the M600 is very surprising unlike its outer looks. This interior is fully covered with carbon fiber which surrounds the driver. This inside, with its great classic appearance, is said to be the most awesome deal in everything that is in the car. The interior also has Alcantara leather trims that have classy red stitching and soft carpeting. It also has a satellite on-board navigation system of the car and a traction control system. Those devices give the driver all the help that he needs while driving the car.

Performance

In terms of its performance, the Noble M600 has under its hood, a 4.4 liter V8 engine and optional couple of superchargers. This engine gives the Noble three variants of machine strength which are 450 hp, 550 hp, and a maximum of 650 hp. Through those strengths, Noble M600 hits 60 miles per hour in less than 3 seconds and has a maximum speed of 225 miles per hour. These speeds will certainly beat out a lot of other cars.

One of the things that deter people from getting this car maybe is its anonymity. It is not the most powerful and fastest supercar available, and it took a month for it to be built and delivered. On the other hand, what people love about this car is its luxurious interior and exterior design, it could have 650 hp that can make a person tingle, and it has a lower price compared to other supercars.

The Noble M600 is a supercar that is perfect for people looking for a land vehicle that is affordable and has a certain uniqueness.

£200k? Wow – so what’s the Noble M600’s interior like?

Very nice, though a little awkward for a tall chap like me to clamber in and out of. But once you’re over the wide sill (covered in carbonfibre) and sat snug within the comfortable Sparco seat everything seems special. The steering wheel is a tiny, tactile, leather-covered item, and there’s a little button hidden behind it that lets you switch between a track day-friendly exhaust note and one that’s (ahem) a little bit louder.

Ahead of the driver are the rev counter and 240mph speedo, while unique-to-Noble toggle switches and dials look after the air-con and other interior systems. They – along with the aftermarket hi-fi – are set within an immaculately finished carbonfibre centre console. The only off-the-shelf parts that you’re able to spot are the air vents, the Audi-sourced interior lights and the same Ford group stalks that you’ll find in an Aston Martin.

And there are other nice touches too, like the fuel and oil filler caps hidden beneath the intakes that sit just behind the side windows. It’s a huge step beyond Nobles of old (the M15 prototype had the steering wheel from a Mk1 Focus), and it only lacks the ultimate sense of occasion that other supercars carry off because there’s isn’t a Prancing Horse on the steering wheel boss or 50 years of racing history.

The Noble M600’s Exterior Applies Two Main Attributes Of A Sports Car: Practicality And Beauty

Via: Noble

Design is obviously a matter of taste, and beauty is undoubtedly relative. However, there are some design requirements that manufacturers must follow in order to achieve maximum aerodynamic and cooling efficiency. This is especially true when designing a supercar with such enormous power and performance.

Noble has worked to keep the design as simple as possible while still offering the best aerodynamic and cooling efficiency by using comprehensive wind tunnel testing. Nothing about the shape and design is merely aesthetic; they all contribute to the performance’s efficacy.

From Top Gear Noble M600 Review

One of the more surprising facts about the M600 is where its engine comes from: a Volvo XC90. The Yamaha-designed 4.4-litre V8 has been transformed though, picking up two turbochargers along the way to see it produce a hefty 650bhp. With a kerb weight of around 1,250kg, this gives a power to weight ratio of 530bhp per tonne. Cue the inevitable reference to something Bugatti-shaped and fast.

And boy, is it fast. Noble reckons it’ll hit 60mph from rest in three seconds, 120mph in 8.9 seconds, and then go on to 225mph. Acceleration from 40-60mph takes one second; 100-120mph takes two seconds. It is fearsomely rapid: genuine hypercar territory. However, with no ABS and no stability control, it takes no prisoners. The sole electronic aid is traction control: to make sure you don’t accidentally turn it off, the button is covered by a genuine flip-up cover from a Tornado fighter jet.

Noble also wisely offers three modes of engine power: ‘road’ gives a relatively sane 450bhp, ‘track’ bumps it up to 550bhp, with ‘race’ releasing the full 650bhp.

Verdict

There are no dynamic issues with the M600 – it’s brilliant to drive – plus the build quality and interior detailing are all spot on. The only minor gripes with the M600 are the small boot (mounted in the nose), the aforementioned cramped footwells and the lack of cabin storage space – there’s no glovebox or door bins, for instance.

Instead, the more major problems are all those that any start-up sports car manufacturer will face. We already know Noble from the exceptional M12 and M400, but the M600 is over twice the price. At £200k it’s more expensive than the forthcoming F458 or P11, and although the Murcielago isn’t a carbonfibre car, it’s only £12k more. Which would you rather see in your garage, and which key fob would you rather fumble in your pocket and show off to friends with?  Even Noble itself expects to have to hand back some of the deposits on the 80 or so orders it holds when potential customers baulk at the newly escalated price.

Noble is also currently restricting sales to the UK, and hopes to find 50 buyers each year in Blighty. By comparison, Arash – which is currently preparing its AF-10 – is only aiming for a dozen worldwide sales. Only time will tell if there are enough rich Brits ready to cough up the cash in the midst of a recession.

Is the Noble M600’s V8 engine special enough to justify the price?

Essentially the base unit is the ultra-compact, Yamaha-designed, 4.4-litre V8 that you’ll find under the bonnet of a big-lump Volvo XC90, but you won’t recognise any Swedish SUV origins now thanks to the addition of twin Garrett turbos and a complete rebuild by American company Motorkraft. In testing Noble has seen 800bhp from the engine, and a reliable 750bhp, but in production guise they’ve detuned it to 650bhp (along with 604lb ft), which means the new outputs are almost double that of the 311bhp/324lb ft Volvo original.

If 650bhp sounds like too much for you then a dial on the dashboard will let you switch between Road (450bhp), Track (550bhp) and Race modes (the full 650bhp). Decisions, decisions…
