Zonda GR

Zonda.

4 Cinque — Not Actually The Last One

Via Tom Hartley Jnr

The Cinque was originally planned to be the last of the Zonda line, but exceptional customer demand meant it simply became another iteration of the ever-popular car. Developed at the request of a dealer in Hong Kong, the Cinque was designed as the road-legal version of the R, sharing many parts in common.

Via Tom Hartley Jnr

Improvements were made to make the car slightly better suited to the road, including three gearbox modes: Comfort, Sport and Race. Track suspension and bare-bones design meant even Comfort mode wasn’t exactly comfortable but it was a significant improvement over earlier models.

Zonda GR

A one of two race car Zonda that actually competed. It was an amazing car, based on a C12 but with 600BHP, and one of them competed in various championships, and even raced at the 2003 Le Mans 24 Hour, but retired just a few laps in with a gearbox fault. Then, it had a massive crash in a race at Most Circuit in Czech Republic. The car was pretty much destroyed in a crash in 2012, but the team have since fixed it and it apparently still competes in some championships. There were many iterations, each more extreme than the next. That wing is masssssivvveee. It “only” has 592bhp, but it weighs just 1100kg. What i’m trying to stay is it goes like stink.

Zonda R Evolución

The Zonda R Evolución is an updated version of the Zonda R. It features many changes over the previous Zonda R. Also the car takes many pieces and inspirations from the Zonda 760RS. It is finished in pearl white with exposed carbon-fibre on the nose. The 6.0L V12 engine is uprated to 800 PS. The body work is still the same, but has improved aerodynamics. It features a bigger air spliter above the two standard air spliter on the front bumper and a pair of small splitter on the sides of rear bumper. A bigger rear central fin — even bigger than the 760 series Zondas — and a small spoiler added below the standard Zonda R spoiler improves aerodynamics and increases down-force.

7 R — Built For The Track

Via Wikimedia Commons

The Zonda R was the first track-only iteration of the Zonda lineage. It uses a 6.0L V12 engine out of Mercedes’ CLK GTR, but power has been upgraded to 740hp. CEO Horacio Pagani hinted at the time of release that the R was a test bed for the Zonda’s eventual replacement, the Huayra.

Via Driving UK

Despite the design of the R looking similar to other Zonda editions, underneath it’s almost entirely new. In fact, it’s been reported that only 10% of regular Zonda components are shared with the R. The track special Zonda is one of the more common Zonda editions, with 15 sold through a three-year production run.

Zonda 760 PS MKII (PS MK3)

It was a cold, wet morning in October of 2017, and while Peter Saywell was driving the Zonda 760PS MKII to Goodwood for his trackday, he hit an oil slick and speared into a barrier, tearing off the nose (Peter was fine). Anyway, it went back to Pagani, and was first shown in its most recent form in May 2018. It’s been completely redone — it now has a full carbon body that varies between blue and “regular” carbon, being split up by tasteful yellow pinstripes. The Cinque style air intakes are gone, but apart from that the general body features are the same. The sequential gearbox has been replaced with a manual, for proper driving pleasure. Also, that’s not a Huayra seat, it’s just a cover. If you want to lay your eyes on this, head to any one of the Saywell Trackdays at Goodwood.

Exterior and Interior

Despite carrying the same «Zonda» name, only 10% of the components from the Zonda F will be carried over. This car is larger with the wheelbase getting an extra 47mm, the overall length getting an additional 394mm and the track increased by 50mm. Meanwhile, the bodywork and aerodynamics have been studied to offer maximum downforce.

The R version will be built from the same materials as the Zonda F: carbon fiber, avional, titanium, inconel, and other state of the art materials. The model will also receive a bespoke HiFi System that will allow the customer to listen to the sounds of this car at Le Mans and the Nurburgring.

The model will be further distinguished by a longer front bonnet with flaps, closed underbody, and a rear overhang with adjustable rear wing and race derived diffusor, which all translate into shattering aerodynamic efficiency.

Being a car developed for the track, the interior features bespoke Toora seats, FIA approved and compliant with the latest HANS standards, along with five-point safety belts and roll-cage. The Zonda R has also received a special Digitek instrumentation that provides the essential information and a sophisticated telemetry through a variety of sensors to monitor every single component of the car.

Specifications

From the very beginning, all Zonda vehicles, including the R version, were equipped with the Mercedes V12. The engine found its place on the chassis and was positioned behind the driver longitudinally, without reaching the rear axle. Probe P is equipped with a 48-valve V12 engine with a volume of 6 liters and an output of 750 hp and a thrust of 710 NM.

This powerful unit is paired with the XTRAC 672 6-speed sequential gearbox and magnesium alloy crankcase. Petal gearbox switches are located on the steering column. The entire Zonda range runs exclusively on the rear drive, although it is believed to be inferior to all-wheel drive models due to reduced stability.

However, with the rear-wheel drive the speed is gained more quickly and it is possible to reduce the weight of the car. It is possible to adjust the aerodynamics and suspension of the car. It is completely independent in the Probe P with double forged levers. Springs are screwed, adjustable shock absorbers installed by Ohlins.

Interior

In the interior, the designers are as smart as ever. All parts of the interior are standard quality and scrupulously designed. There is a certain racing mood and peak functionality. If you take the seats, here are installed branded Toora, which meet the new requirements of the FIA and are in harmony with the neck protection system HANS. The safety of the driver and passenger is ensured by five-point seat belts and an integrated chromium-molybdenum frame.

The air conditioning nozzles made of chromium are highlighted. The lower part of the steering wheel is “cut off”, which gives comfort and style to the interior, and does not “steal” free space in the cabin. It is worth noting that almost every interior was designed exclusively to suit the tastes of each individual customer. Finishing materials may differ.

Zonda R Evolución[]

A bigger rear central fin — even bigger than the 760 series Zondas — and a small spoiler added below the standard Zonda R spoiler improves aerodynamics and increases down-force. Announced production run of 15 cars.

Zonda Oliver Evolution

One of the coolest Zondas. Made for a Tokyo car collector (and named after his son), this is one of the more subtle Zonda 760s, if that’s even a thing. In terms of paint, you’ve got grey and carbon, with Italian flag stripes, which are amazing. It also has a completely MENTAL wing. I mean, look at it! There’s two wings on a wing! The wing is bigger than the car! MENTAL! This car can be found in the UK, as part of a collection that also includes an MC12 Corsa, Laf, F50 and the UK’s first Huayra Roadster.

Before I get onto the “R” line, it’s worth mentioning that there are few Zondas that were meant to happen but didn’t/ haven’t happened yet.

Exterior

At first glance, the Zonda F has a clear resemblance to the Zonda R, but in reality, these models have only 10% of the general details. Visually, it is possible to distinguish them by the air intake located on the roof. It serves to direct the oncoming air to the engine. The wheelbase of the Probe P was increased by 47 mm, and the track was expanded by 50 mm.

Length became 4,886 mm, width – 2,014 mm, and height – 1,147 mm. The body of the machine has a huge downforce. Taking into account its own weight – only 1070 kg, thanks to aerodynamics at high speeds the Probe is pressed with a force of up to 1 500 kg!

The housing is made with carbon and titanium. Thanks to this, the quality of rigidity has been increased when the weight is reduced. Rear and front frames are made of chromium-molybdenum alloy, the panels on the carbon fibre body of the MD System. All the details are made to the smallest detail, up to the screws, which were used only titanium, and made by the company Poggipolini.

It is impossible to ignore the external design of Pagani Zonda R. Massive bumper, wide air intakes, “small eyes of the headlights”, rearview mirrors, four exhaust system nozzles and everything else testifies to the uniqueness of the company Pagani.

Racing[]

Zonda GR

Pagani Zonda GR ——>

Development of the Zonda GR started in December 2002. At this stage the Zonda was nearly four years old, but had yet to be entered in major motorsports. Tom Weickardt, owner of American Viperacing, Toine Hezemans, owner of Carsport Holland, and Paul Kumpen, owner of GLPK Racing, created a new company, Carsport Zonda, to build a racing version. They secured exclusive rights to develop, build and sell competition Zondas from Horacio Pagani, and the first GR was completed at Carsport’s facility in Modena within months.

The Zonda GR is based on the Zonda S. It was built on the same carbon fiber chassis, with tube frames in front and back. The bodywork was modified to include front and rear diffusers and louvers for improved aerodynamics. The car was 2 meters (6.6 ft) wide, in accordance with the regulations of the FIA and ACO. The car’s weight was reduced to 1,100 kilograms (2,400 lb), and a new suspensionwas designed. New wheels and brakes were also specified. The engine was equipped with an enlarged radiator, and the engine and gearbox also had new oil coolers.

The performance of the Zonda GR is well beyond that of the stock car. The car sprints from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.3 seconds and the engine produces around 600 PS (440 kW; 590 hp) at 5,800 rpm and 580 lb⋅ft (786 N⋅m) of torque at 4,300 rpm with a redline increased to 7,500 rpm.

Special editions[]

Monza

Pagani Zonda Monza ——>

The Zonda Monza shown at the 2004 Paris Motor Show is a track-day version of the Zonda built for King Moka. Borrowing its appearance cues from the Zonda GR, the Monza included a dry sump version of the Zonda S 7.3 engine tuned to 600 PS (441 kW; 592 hp) and had improved cooling. Modified aerodynamics, including a different wing and front diffuser, allowed greater speed, as did optimized gearing. The car was lighter and fitted with polycarbonate side windows along with an unmuffled exhaust. The revised interior includes different pedals, steering wheel, and seats, as well as a reinforced roll cage. Larger brakes and a stiffer suspension also improve performance. Finally, an external fire extinguisher is included for safety.

Uno

Pagani Zonda Uno ——>

A special one-off built for Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Thani, a member of the royal family of Qatar, famous for his turquoise car collection. Originally, the car was a Zonda F Roadster that was crashed in Qatar and was sent back to the factory to be rebuilt. The car specifications are similar to those of a Cinque with the new carbon-titanium chassis. It also has the LEDs on the front of the car like the Tricolore. Unique to this car are the darkened rear lights and the rear exhaust; the four pipes are shorter than standard. Also, the black wheels with turquoise wheel-striping, and the dual-tone diffuser are eye-catchers, together with numerous black accents, like those on the exhaust system unit. Now the car belongs to a Chinese owner and he also added some unique logos that represent himself.

HH

The Zonda HH is a special one-off edition, in Monterey Blue, that features the engine from the Cinque and most of the bodywork from the Zonda F Roadster. The HH was commissioned by Danish programmer David Heinemeier Hansson.

750

The Zonda 750 was another special one-off edition Zonda for a member of the Al-Thani family. However the order for it was canceled due to a disagreement between the proposed owner and Pagani. The 750 is mainly based on the Cinque, but also features several custom parts. It was expected that it would be finished in a purple colour, but the project was left incomplete in orange with the front end left unpainted. It was later revealed that it was a Zonda Cinque development mule that appeared in the short film of Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit. It was upgraded to 750 bhp upon customer’s request. It is now known as the Zonda 760 La Nonna and upgraded to the 760 series specifications. «Nonna» is Italian for grandmother, because it was actually the prototype for the Zonda F model.

Absolute

Pagani Zonda Absolute ——>

The Pagani Zonda Absolute is a special one-off edition Zonda shipped to Hong Kong. It features a matte black carbon fiber body and the engine of the Pagani Zonda Cinque as well as right hand drive.

PS

A one-off special that was commissioned by Peter Saywell. It was finished in white with yellow striping on the side. The car is the only one with all four exhaust pipes placed in a row instead of a square. In January 2013 pictures surfaced of a redesigned Zonda PS. The PS has now been finished in bright blue and has the same rear-fin, air intakes, roof scoop and the spoiler as the 760RS & 760LH, but the exhaust pipes arranged in a row have now been replaced with the original layout. Also it features the same day-time LEDs as on the Tricolore, 760LH and the 760RS. What makes this Zonda unique is that its front arches are fitted with carbon-fibre fenders for improved down-force. Actually it’s not a formal member of Zonda 760 series because the engine remains the same as before. The car was involved in an accident in the UK in October 2017.

GJ

Pagani Zonda GJ ——>

The Zonda GJ was commissioned by a Scottish entrepreneur Gareth Jones whose Zonda S heavily crashed in 2009. He decided to get the car modified to a special edition exclusively made for him after the crash. The car was upgraded in both looks and performance, such as the addition of design elements from the Zonda F and Cinque along with a matte carbon exterior finish with red accents. The engine was upgraded to the specifications of the Zonda F clubsport.

Zonda F Roadster Final Edition

The last Zonda F Roadster was commissioned in 2010 and 2011 to commemorate the end of the Zonda F production. All of them were finished with a carbon-fibre body and the power was increased to 665 bhp.

Zonda R[]

The Zonda R debuted at the Geneva Motor Show 2007, using the 6.0 litre V12 M120 engine sourced from the race version of the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR. The Zonda R’s competition lies with track-based cars, such as the Ferrari FXX and Maserati MC12 Corsa rather than the original Zonda’s road competitors as it is not road-homologated.

Despite sharing much of the Zonda’s shape, the R is almost entirely new, sharing only 10% of the Zonda F’s components. It has been obliquely suggested by Horacio Pagani that this car is a testbed chassis for certain components of the Zonda’s replacement, the Pagani Huayra (in the same vein as the Ferrari 288 GTO Evoluzione and the successive F40) and that the Zonda R accurately reflects some of the Huayra’s features. Only 15 Zonda R were produced.

Performance

The Pagani Zonda R has a top speed of 218 mph (350.8 km/h), accelerates to 0 to 60 mph (0.0 to 96.6 km/h) in less than 2.7 seconds, can brake from 60 to 0 mph (96.6 to 0.0 km/h) in 96.0 ft (29.3 m), and corners at 1.62g.

Chassis

The central carbon chassis incorporates a roll cage and a rubber racing fuel cell with 4 fuel pumps and quick refuel filler cap, similar to GT race cars. The wheelbase has been increased by 47 mm (1.9 in) to increase stability. The front and rear subframes are brand-new, built to accommodate new suspension geometry, and produced in Avional. The slick-shod wheels are new forged-magnesium center-lock models, which in conjunction with on-board pneumatic airjacks (again, like the FXX) allow rapid change of the entire wheel assemblies.

The car senses, displays and logs information about the amount of down-force that is generated at each wheel at all times. It is thought that this system will enable owners to adjust set-up according to track conditions and to improve their cornering technique.

Bodywork

Pagani Zonda R ——>

In addition to the wheelbase increase (47 mm), overall length has increased by 394 mm (15.5 in) and track by 50 mm (2.0 in). The bodywork and aerodynamics have been altered to offer maximum down-force, featuring a longer front bonnet with flaps, a closed underbody and a new rear overhang with adjustable rear wing and race-derived diffuser. These are intended to translate into increased aerodynamic efficiency and down-force for maximum cornering speed. It is also noted that the car’s new rear bodywork is minimal in the extreme, being composed mostly of vent. This is thought to be symptomatic of the need to keep the engine cool enough, even under hard track use. Again, this is similar to the gutted bodywork of the Ferrari FXX Evoluzione.

Engine

Zonda R engine (Mercedes-Benz M120 AMG) ——>

Output has increased to 750 PS (552 kW; 740 hp) at 7500 rpm and 710 N⋅m (524 lb⋅ft) of torque. A lightweight carbon fibre high performance intake system, racing multiple disc centered clutch and Formula One-style exhaust system, hydroformed in Inconel 625 and ceramic coated for optimal heat dissipation, have been added. The AMG-built engine is mated to a 6-speed longitudinally-mounted manual sequential synchronized gearbox.

Interior

The car’s interior is spartan, reflecting the car’s racetrack aspirations and intended home, and features seats customized to the driver to offer maximum support. As before, the Digitek instrumentation provides essential information and the sophisticated telemetry allows a variety of sensors to monitor numerous aspects of the car.

Nürburgring

On 30 June 2010, Pagani claimed a new record for production-based cars using the Pagani Zonda R and completing the Nürburgring in 6:47, beating the Ferrari 599XX.

1 La Nonna — The Grandmother

Via Speedhunters

The La Nonna Zonda, aka «the Grandmother», is undoubtedly the most special Pagani in existence. It’s actually the test vehicle that development for every edition of the Zonda has been carried out on. Technically it’s a C12 prototype, but it’s been rebuilt so many times with new parts that it’s very much a separate beast.

Everything from new engines and gearboxes to new body parts were all tested first on this one car. Throughout its many test runs, it’s racked up an unbelievable number of miles. The car’s odometer is reported to be over 1,000,000km (621,371 miles), surely ranking it among the highest-mileage supercars ever.

Pagani unveiled the final version of the Zonda R, called Zonda Revolución to clients and family members during «Vanishing Point 2013», the International Pagani gathering. The central monocoque is carbon-titanium, the needle on the scale stops at 1070 kg. The Mercedes-AMG engine is an evolution of the Zonda R powerplant. The 6.0-liter V12 now develops an output of 800 PS (588 kW; 789 hp) and 730 N⋅m (540 lbf⋅ft) of torque, resulting in a power to weight ratio of 748 hp per tonne. The Xtrac 672 6-speed transversal and sequential gearbox changes gears in 20ms. The traction control developed by Bosch with 12 stage traction control and the renewed ABS system, allows the vehicle to further adapt to the driver’s driving style. The aerodynamics feature new and updated canards on the front, as well as a vertical stabilizer supporting the main rear wing. Beside using R Evolución’s body, the Zonda Revolución also features a DRS (Drag Reduction System) on the rear wing. The system has two different operating modes, both can be activated by the driver at any time. The manual system is controlled with the DRS button on the steering wheel. The rear wing changes between maximum and minimum down-force settings, at the occurrence of a lateral acceleration of 0.8 g and a minimum speed of 100 km/h (62 mph). Holding down the DRS for more than two seconds engages the DRS to work automatically according to the algorithms developed by the Pagani engineers during the development phase. The main rear wing also utilises mounts on the side of the vehicle alongside a smaller wing at the end of the vertical stabiliser. The Brembo braking system adopts new CCMR discs derived from F1 technology. With a weight saving of 15% compared to the previous CCM discs, the CCMR offer higher stiffness and lower operating temperatures on extreme track use. This contributes to the life of the disc which is increased by four times, with no sign of fading and a significant overall increase in braking power. Each Revolución, of which only five were built, was priced at €2.2 million before taxes.

Zonda HP Barchetta

The last of the “series” Zondas, these are some of the most insane Zondas out there. At the front, the Mileson-style splitter winglets are paired with F-style foglights, as well as Cinque-style canards and the MD-style bonnet. Cinque parts are prevalent throughout the back and the side — intakes from this can be seen, as well as the wing around the back, twinned with LM Style rear lights. The most obvious differences though are the wheel spats, new air intake and of course the chopped windscreen. Just 3 will be made, with the first car (seen here) going into Horacio’s personal collection. The price is rumoured to be around £15 million.

Engine

Under the hood of the Zonda R, Pagani has placed a V12 engine developed by the racing specialists at Mercedes AMG. The engine borrows the basic architecture including an ingenious dry sump allowing a low center of gravity from the CLK GTR. It features a lightweight carbon fiber high-performance intake system, a racing multiple disc sintered clutch, and a Formula 1 style exhaust system, hydroformed in Inconel 625 and ceramic coated for optimal heat dissipation.

The engine delivers a total of 750 HP at 8000 rpm and 523 lbs-ft of torque and is mated to a 6 speed transversal manual sequential synchronised gearbox. This will allow the Zonda R to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and up to a top speed of 217 mph.

The V12 engine is combined with a central carbon chassis, new front and rear subframes, a new suspension geometry, magnesium forged rims with central wheel nuts, and a quick pneumatic lifting system.
