It’s amazing how a few small, relatively inexpensive additions to the exterior have transformed the visual character of the S5 Sportback. What was once an understated, elegant sleeper sedan is now more extroverted than ever, almost to the level of Audi’s RS models. This Turbo Blue paint shade is certainly a big contributor, but what also helps are the new LED signatures on the headlamps and tail-lamps, the pointier bumpers with swollen brushed silver accents, and a grille that’s now accented with silver ‘studs’ rather than traditional horizontal slats.

Updated styling brings more aggressive looks to what was an understated sleeper sedan.

Furthering this sporty cause are the aggressive-looking set of five-spoke, 19-inch alloys, a size up on the 18-inchers of before, which fill out the wheel arches nicely, and the S models’ trademark silver wing mirrors and quad tailpipes. Moreover, since this is a CBU import, the ride height hasn’t been raised for India, and what you get is a nice wide stance (the S5’s shape was always inherently muscular) but still enough ground clearance for our roads.

Audi was an early pioneer in the fully digital dashboard and continues this tradition here. 

With both phone-mirroring Apple CarPlay/Android Auto software in the central screen and a head-up display that projects information like speed and navigation directions, the pretty color LCD screen in front of the driver isn’t as useful as it once was, but it still looks good. Unfortunately, unlike other Audis such as the R8 and TT, this instrument panel display doesn’t also integrate with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. 

Strangely less useful, as well, is the absence of a key meter in the instrument panel cluster: there is no gas gauge. The S5 Sportback will tell you how many more miles you can drive until the tank is empty, but it takes a number of button presses to get the traditional E-to-F meter to appear. 

Perhaps Audi is trying to soft-pedal us into our EV future? I cannot think of any other reason why the company would make this choice.

Still, I’m an optimist, so I’m willing to see the tank as half full. The S5 Sportback is a full package: a sporty, sharp-suited all-arounder worthy of consideration by anyone who thinks only an SUV can provide utility.

The whole point of buying the S5 over the A5 is for the improved performance and track handling. So how big is that performance gap? Let’s compare the specs of the 2021 Coupes (the sportbacks are very similar, but a tiny bit slower because of the additional weight).

The A5 features a four cylinder 2.0-liter 261-hp turbocharged TFSI engine that can take it from 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds.

By comparison, the S5 features a much more powerful 3.0-liter TFSI 349-hp V6 which takes it from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

Although you won’t get to legally be allowed to drive either car at their top speed, the A5 maxes out at 130 mph whereas the S5 can reach 155 mph.

While the similar BMW system I tried recently failed to yield from pulverizing, even in the most comfortable setting, the S5 Sportback in Comfort mode became appropriately cushy for the sciatic posterior of this middle-aged gentleman. And when I wanted some German dynamism, the Dynamic setting provided just the proper soupcon of sportif. 

Adaptive dampers, available on the $2,500 S-Sport package, might enhance this differential even further (it also includes a torque-vectoring rear differential that puts power to the grippiest tire even more accurately) but alas, our tester didn’t include that option. 

It did have a host of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that kept it in its lane, at a set speed, and in avoidance of obstacles front, side, and rear. Its brakes, like most modern brakes, felt uncannily mysterious to me: sometimes eminently grabby, sometimes imminently lackadaisical. 

But when I had to stomp them to avoid a collision with one of our local cervine projectiles upstate, they ground us to an immediate halt. Some Drama ensued as the ADAS lit up the dash like a roller disco. But, aside from a bit of breathlessness, we and the deer escaped unscathed.

With 21.8 cubic-feet o storage space behind the rear seats, the S5 Sportback offers more useful cargo room than most sports sedan rivals. The advantage shrinks relative to the competition with the seats folded, but this is a hugely practical machine. Audi

Everything I love about the RS5 Sportback carries over to the S5. It looks good, it’s quiet, it’s comfortable, the technology is really good and you can throw a lot of stuff behind thanks to the hatch.

The S5’s 3.0-liter turbo V6 produces 349 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque, which is a lot, and with Quattro all-wheel drive and a fast eight-speed automatic transmission, the S5 will hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Yes, the RS5 Sportback will do 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, but unless you regularly bring your luxury four-door hatchback to the track (you don’t), that 0.7-second difference means the next. become meaningless in the real world.

Also, one of my main complaints about the perfect RS5 is that it’s somewhat sterile – like sure, fast, but no raw emotion. The S5 is like this too, but it fits a little better in what is supposed to be a mid-performance car. There’s a big difference between the Mercedes-AMG C43 and C63, but the S5 and RS5 always feel very similar.

The 3.0 liter V6 S5 is a fine machine. There’s plenty of low-end torque and the double scroll turbocharger spins quickly to provide an on-demand boost. Having fun with the engine also doesn’t completely save you fuel.

I earned 23 miles per gallon for a week of playing in the canyon and running errands around Los Angeles, matching the combined EPA estimates.

Replacing the 3.0 liter, turbo V-6 is more powerful and torquier than the supercharged engine that came on the last generation S5. It accelerates quickly from stopping and overtakes other drivers on the highway with ease. Despite following the Mercedes-AMG C43’s 4.1-second zero-to-60 mph time, the last S5 model we tested still managed an impressive 4.3-second sprint.

The eight-speed automatic performed admirably, but a preference for second gear began when Comfort mode exacerbated the engine’s initial turbo lag and made the S5 drowsy.

Tap the Drive Select switch from Comfort mode and into Dynamic or Auto mode, however, and the S5 Sportback comes to life, excitedly leaving a line in first gear. Likewise, the transmission is reluctant to lower the Comfort mode.

Again, switching to Dynamic or Automatic mostly fixes this problem. Our test car is equipped with optional 19-inch performance tires and the S Sport package, which includes a torque vector rear differential and adaptive dampers.

These parts together give the S5 Sportback a sturdy yet forgiving ride and lots of grips when cornering.

The coupe is a two door car with a sloped rear roofline, whereas the sportback has four doors. Unlike a typical four-door sedan, the sportback has a more sloped rear roofline, giving it a sportier, more aerodynamic appearance. Think of it as a 4-door coupe.
