Renault alpine a110 2018

Alpine a110 premiere edition review – wow!

More details

However, Alpine is now back at it and they received funding and a green flag from Renault to develop another great two-door sports car. After a few prototypes and test mules, the 2018 Alpine A110 has finally been revealed and it is far more impressive than we first thought. This is their first production car in more than 2 decades and we hope it is not the only one.

The A110 is a mid-engine sports car which only weighs 2,500 pounds. This means that it is far lighter than some of its rivals which is very impressive. The price has been set at a rather impressive €58,500 which is actually higher than expected. However, this is for the Premiere Edition so it will likely go down a bit soon after launch.

2018 Renault Alpine A110 MORE DETAILS

For more info, we’ll have to wait for an official debut in Geneva, but sadly, already we have one detail that kind of spoils the whole picture. 2018 Renault Alpine A110 is about to be priced at £48,500 ($60k) which is around £10k ($12,5k) pricier than Cayman. Yes, it should be quicker to 60 mph, but lightweight will take its toll on luxury and comfort, as it did with Alfa 4C, and we hardly believe that it could match Porsche’s dynamic abilities.

Also, the badge could be more than just a slight problem in that price area, so this could end up as Vel Satis, respectively as a reminder that French could do it too, and they can do all, expect from great sales part.

What’s the A110 like to drive?

In a word, fantastic. This is an unintimidating yet thrilling sports car to chuck down a sinuous road, and the best possible advertisement for reducing weight instead of increasing power. You sit very low down in bucket seats with high levels of both comfort and support; those well over six-feet tall have both ample legroom, and headroom, even when wearing a helmet on track.

Early on, you notice how eagerly and precisely the nose responds to steering inputs, much like a Toyota GT86. The brake pedal is firm and easy to modulate, the steering quick-witted and nicely weighted with decent feel, throttle response is keen, and there’s a fruity burble from the exhaust that in itself suggests a certain playfulness. So straight away there’s an energy to the way the A110 goes about its business.

With the three-model range introduced in 2022, there’s a predictable trio of characters on offer. Alpine suggest that the A110 and A110 GT share the same compliant chassis tune, with just the additional power and larger brakes to differentiate them, but in our tests, the feedback and ability to cope with poor road surfaces put the GT last, with the hard-edged S remarkably able to absorb real-world roads despite a distinctly firmer setup. Resist the optional 18-inch wheels on our test A110 and the difference would be clearer still.

It also rides nicely, its body staying spookily flat on even rougher surfaces as it soaks up bumps with a great deal of sophistication. This isn’t a complete magic carpet ride experience and tyre roar gets intrusive on harsher tarmac surfaces, but the overwhelming feeling is one of calm composure, of a car that doesn’t tug around on cambers – like the Alfa 4C – nor threaten to bounce you off a bumpy road when you press on. And yet it feels intimately connected to the surface all the same.

You could drive everywhere at quite modest speed in the A110 and still get a lot of enjoyment out of what is a very tactile sports car. It’s like a more grown-up, more serious MX-5 in that respect.

What are the specs?

The spec sounds as promising as those evocative new Alpine looks: a mid-engined aluminium sports car that’s a little over four metres long, produces 249bhp and weighs just 1100kg.

Its most obvious rivals include the Porsche 718 Cayman, Alfa 4C, Lotus Elise/Exige and the four-cylinder Jaguar F-type. But Alpine has also taken a look at the Toyota GT86 and toppy Audi TTs during development. Many of those rivals are no-longer offered, or cost considerably more, leaving the A110 in an enviable position.

The Alpine gets an all-new, bonded and riveted aluminium platform, a mid-mounted 1.8-litre turbocharged engine shared with the latest Renault Sport Megane and a seven-speed Getrag dual-clutch gearbox too. The latter is a wet-clutch unit with – unusually – bespoke ratios, and it’s different to both the disappointing dry-clutch unit in the Clio, and the wet clutch unit in that new Megane RS hot hatch.

If you’re thinking that a manual gearbox would be lighter, the A110’s chief engineer David Twohig (who’s since departed to join Byton) argues that isn’t necessarily the case – having no clutch pedal and being able to engineer a floating centre console that didn’t need to house a manual transmission clawed back the kilos. It means this A110 will never be offered with a manual gearbox.

Once you’ve driven it, you’ll realise the DCT (dual-clutch transmission) suits this lithe two-seater well. The changes are near-instant, never leaving you waiting for the cogs to mesh. And the ability to relax and drive it in Auto about town only adds to the breadth of talents.

A mechanical limited-slip differential isn’t included. Instead, the ESC-based braking helps to juggle torque between the rear wheels. Four-piston Brembo calipers take care of stopping duties.

The suspension is by aluminium double wishbones all round, which keeps the Michelin Pilot Sport 4s in better contact with the road – in fact, Renault says the harder you go, the better the grip. This is why the springs can be relatively soft, and the anti-roll bars not particularly chunky – there’s no need to resist the roll of the car in the same way you do with a heavier car using strut-type front suspension.

The space required by double wishbones at the rear also means that only a four-cylinder engine will fit. Dreaming of a Clio V6 style multi-cylinder A110? Dream on…

There are no adaptive dampers, but you do have Normal, Sport and Track modes. These adjust the weight of the – electrically assisted – steering, throttle response, stability control settings, engine sound and gear shifts. You can turn the stability control all the way off and the instrument pack changes colour and design as you crank through the different modes.

A flat underfloor and rear diffuser removes the need for a rear spoiler, and even the cooling vents at the rear are neatly hidden away next to the rear side windows and at the bottom of the rear screen.

Weight has been chased away wherever possible. Sabelt seats weigh 13kg each – half those of the outgoing Megane RS – clips for the ABS sensor cables are made from aluminium, and the parking brake element of the rear brake caliper has been integrated into the main calliper. We applaud the anal attention to detail of the diet.

Passenger & boot space

How it copes with people and clutter

Don’t be fooled by the Alpine A110’s diminutive dimensions. We promise that even if you’re well over six feet tall, you’ll fit without feeling hemmed in. That’s because the seat is mounted low, there are humps in the roof to aid head room, and the front seats slide back a long way.

Storage space is a much weaker point, though. There are no door bins or glovebox – all you have is a centre console between the seats with a tray for a smartphone, a wallet and a few other odds and ends. On top of the console is a slot that’s perfect for the car’s card-shaped key fob (or a phone on charge), but the single cupholder at the other end is rather shallow. Drive with care if you’ve stopped to grab a hot takeaway coffee.

What’s the price and what’s in the range?

This year, the Alpine A110 will arrive Down Under as a Premiere Edition, loaded with kit, but then two other versions arrive with more choices, the Pure and Legende. The Pure will be priced from $97,000+ORC while the Legende will list from $103,500+ORC.

The Pure is the track-day special of the range running the same bucket seats as the limited-run variant arriving this year. It runs 18-inch wheels and gets the Alpine driving mode selector which offers Normal, Sport and Track driving modes. It’ll have front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera as standard.

The Legende has a full leather interior with the driver’s seat a six-way adjustable ‘comfort’ seat. Among other things, the Legende is standard with climate control, sat-nav and LED lights, it can also be had with a Focal sound system (cost-option).

The Premiere edition ($106,500+ORC) will be limited to just 60 vehicles and will be standard in Alpine Blue metallic paint it will feature Brembo bi-material brakes, an active-valve sports exhaust and Sabelt one-piece bucket seats weighing just 13.1kg each. It will also offer 18-inch Fuchs forged wheels, rear parking sensors, blue Alpine logo on the steering wheel, blue brake calipers, aluminium pedals and a Focal sound system. Each of the 60 vehicles will be numbered.

Technology

This isn’t a tech laden car, because that would mean weight. Even the Focal audio system has been designed to keep the kg’s to a minimum. There is a basic 7-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation. Plus, if you’re into Telematics there’s a range of data such as lap times and g-force figures you can dive into.

Just don’t expect Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. However, there is what they call Alpine MYSPIN which will mirror iOS and Android phones via a dedicated app. But to be honest it’s not worth the hassle.

Both I and our Dictator Trevor Long spent some quality Alpine Premiere Edition A110 here’s our summation in one sentence.

Alpine A110 2023: Prices

Alpine’s massive, and admirable, commitment to driver focus and weight that means some serious compromises if you’re buying an A110 as a daily driver, which significantly limits its potential audience. With a starting price just a few pounds shy of £50,000 for the Pure model it’s at the upper end of the marketplace, too.

Indeed, that is around £14,000 more than an entry-level Audi TT, or £10,000 more than a TT of similar power, and you’ll not need to explain what the Audi is every time anyone asks about it. More significantly is that £50,000 is enough to buy you a Porsche Cayman. That’s a seriously tough rival, with huge brand cachet.

The drive needs to be exemplary, then, as the quality of the materials, and the operation of the infotainment just isn’t in the same league as its potential rivals, and that’s at the entry-level Pure price point. Three other trims are offered, the Legende, the GT and that more powerful A110S, which gets more power to help justify its £60,000 list price. There’s also various special editions commanding even more.

Pure model buyers are likely to add a number of options to their cars, too, with things like an Active Sports Exhaust requiring nearly £1400 extra, any colour other than white being a cost option, while it’d be a shame not to have the excellent carbon-backed Sabelt bucket seats, for £1650.

Legende gains a Focal audio system, larger alloy wheels, aluminium pedals and desirable front and rear parking sensors with a reversing camera over the Pure for £4,000 more.

The A110S gains not just more power for its inflated price, but improved brakes, that switchable sports exhaust and Alpine Telematics. Oddly, though, the range-topping S only gets front and rear parking sensors, the reversing camera of the Legende not even being available optionally.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=MQk5iESeEVo

Specifications Alpine A110 2018

Unlike the exterior and interior, the specifications of the Renault Alpine A110 2018 are not very diverse. At the moment, the buyer will have access to only one version of a gasoline turbocharged engine with a volume of 1.8 liters per 4 cylinders. This is a completely new unit, jointly developed by Renault-Nissan specifically for the new Alpine A110 2018 model.

Also, together with the engine, a completely new, unique exhaust system was developed. The maximum engine power of the Renault Alpine A110 2018 is 252 hp and the maximum torque is 320 Nm. Considering the low weight of 1080 kg, up to the first hundred on the speedometer, the car can accelerate in 4.5 seconds. The engine is paired with a seven-speed DCT automatic transmission with dual wet clutch.

The closed bottom of the sports car Renault Alpine A110 2018 gives good performance not only in aerodynamics, but also in fuel economy. For better braking, Renault engineers used aluminum brake pads specially designed for the 2018 Alpine A110.

Renault representatives say that after the official start of sales of the car, the buyer will be offered several more engine options. Perhaps it will be a modified six-cylinder V6, which is now being installed on the Clio, or a completely new, more powerful engine.

Alpine A110 2023: Running Costs

With a small engine working not very hard to power it, the fuel economy on the official combined consumption cycle, tested to the newer, tougher WLTP regulations, is 39.2mpg for the Pure and Legende, and 38.6mpg for the A110S.

The reality will be a bit less, as it’s a car that begs to be driven pretty enthusiastically, but if you were to be mixing some mundane motoring with the fun, it’ll be surprisingly economical.

CO2 emissions of 162g/km for the lower power models is good, too, while the S’s additional power only adds 1g/km to that, so you’ll pay the same annual road tax, regardless of which model you pick.

All will sit in group 44 and above for insurance, which is comparable to its rivals, so depending on your driving record, and where you live/park it, it’s not going to be punitively expensive.

It’s too new to get a real handle on long-term reliability, but servicing shouldn’t be too expensive, particularly given the majority of the parts are Renault sourced, and being light things like brakes and tyres should wear slower than its weightier rivals

Alpine A110 Models and Specs

A110 Pure, A110 Legende (now GT) and A110 S make up the available range, the Premiere Edition models that introduced it being built in limited numbers and they’re all gone. There’s also various special editions.

The Alpine A110 Pure makes the most sense, as it has all the performance you need, and the headline-grabbing lightest weight, but that Legende (just try saying that without affecting a French lilt) model does add some kit that’s desirable.

The Alpine A110 Legende/GT includes a reversing camera, better standard audio, larger 18-inch wheels (the Pure having 17-inch alloy wheels) and some trim improvements inside, too. A Pure with the carbon backed bucket seats and a Sports Exhaust would do very nicely though, thank you.

What’s trickier to recommend is the Alpine A110S, Alpine’s revisions making for a very slightly quicker car, but one that slightly robs the standard A110 of its core appeal – that being the supple, fine ride and detailed feel. Yes, it’s the flagship, with lower, stiffer suspension, more power, bigger brakes and more standard equipment, but it loses some of its finesse because of it.

Buying & owning

Everyday costs, plus how reliable and safe it is

The entry-level Alpine A110 trim is the one to go for – this sports coupé is more about the driving experience than the fripperies. It comes with part-suede and part-leather-trimmed seats, cruise control and climate control, and can be identified by the 17in alloy wheels and grey brake calipers.

A sports exhaust, 18in wheels and upgraded brakes are available from the options list. It’s not cheap, but it is priced pretty close to the entry-level Porsche 718 Cayman and is predicted to have even better resale values.

GT trim brings some extra power along with the added convenience of the parking aids and extra seat adjustments that we mentioned earlier. It also adds 18in alloy wheels, blue brake calipers, brown leather seats and dashboard, power-folding door mirrors, ambient lighting, a suede headlining, a sports exhaust and aluminium pedals.

The hardcore S has stiffer suspension, suede roof-lining, part-leather seat trim with contrasting orange stitching, black 18in alloy wheels and uprated Brembo brakes with orange calipers. The range-topping R has carbonfibre body panels, carbonfibre wheels, carbonfibre bucket seats and adjustable suspension.

All A110s get a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty. The Cayman has no mileage limit, but the A110 should be more affordable to run because its low weight is great for fuel consumption. Even the S managed to average 34.3mpg in our test, which is very respectable for a sports car.

There isn’t a Euro NCAP safety rating for the A110, although you could argue that its fine handling is enough to get you out of trouble. It’s still a shame that a modern car comes without automatic emergency braking (AEB) and lane-keep assistance – although the same is true of the Cayman. The A110 only lists a driver and passenger airbag, whereas the Cayman has a tally of six.
