What’s it like to drive?

The 5.2-litre quad-cam twin-turbo V12 beast has 705hp and a 0-62mph time of less than 3.5 seconds. In short, it’s glorious. The engine howls its way past 5,000rpm in an unbroken rage of revolutions that leaves you tingling. Theoretically you might crack 25mpg on a run, but you should expect it to be more like 15. Maybe even 10. Maybe even single figures if you’re really enjoying yourself.

9
Aston’s DBX SUV is actually faster 0-62mph thanks to its four-wheel drive system.

Turn in is sensational for something so large. The steering is firm and easy to place and the feedback through the steering wheel is decidedly old school, full of vibrations to let you know how it’s all going down there.

There are different drive modes, accessed via easy to use buttons on the steering wheel. The most ferocious suspension setting is mostly aimed at track work and is not well suited to the UK’s rubbish roads. The middle setting offers a bit more firmness and control, but it’s still bearable. But the softest setting is where most people will keep it. This is very different from the Ferrari 812 Superfast, which is almost unusable on real roads in anything other than its softest setting

The eight speed gearbox can be a bit lethargic when left to its own devices, but you’ll most likely want to drive it in manual mode where you select gears via the paddles.

9
The DBS really comes into its own above 60mph.

It’s surprisingly amenable at low speeds as it copes with speed bumps and potholes well and the steering isn’t overly heavy either.

The Porsche 911 will keep up with a DBS on a long winding road and it’s broadly as comfortable and as easy to use. But its engine character and note is very different and not as operatic as the Aston’s.

And what’s it like to drive?

Even the regular DBS is a little intimidating at first. The offside front wing is utterly out of sight and the bonnet disappears from view before the vents begin, so there’s acres of precious carbon out front you just can’t place without fear of clipping something.

That aside – and it becomes less of an issue over time – the DBS is no more intimidating to drive than a DB11. There is some tyre roar and a faint rumble from the engine, but with eight gears to choose from it never need get near the point when it starts to really make itself heard. The DBS isolates and filters with aplomb too, and despite the 21-inch wheels doesn’t crash into potholes or fidget over expansion joints.

On fast, sweeping roads, or on the autobahn, the regular DBS is a monster with relentless mid-range urge. That 664lb ft torque total is around from 1800 all the to 5000rpm, and in fourth Aston reckons it’ll do 50 to 100mph in 4.2 seconds. Make sure it’s at least in Sport mode too, as then the engine becomes vocal at 3000 rather than 4000rpm, and pops and bangs on the overrun. Sport+ gives you lower gears, and even more exhaust theatrics.

The most significant change between the regular DBS and the 770 surprisingly has nothing to do with the additional power or added stiffness. It’s about the engine calibration and torque shaping.

There’s a different engine map that shuffles mechanical torque around to make acceleration more linear and more naturally-aspirated feeling. Peak torque for a regular DBS drops like the anchor on an oil tanker at 1,800rpm. But for the 770 there’s technically not a specific number as it changes from gear to gear. It sounds bizarre, but you need to work all 5204ccs to get the most out of it.

It’s glorious. Listening to that V12 howl its way past 5,000rpm is special and the unbroken rage of revolutions leave you tingling. One of the other benefits – appreciated on a pissing wet day in Oxfordshire – is that it makes it easier to drive as that hammer of torque comes later in the rev range. We only felt the guiding hands of the T/C god four times in two hours.

The 0-62mph time of 3.4seconds isn’t spectacular for something with supercar pace these days. A chap in a Tesla Model 3 even caught up while we were blasting along the A424. There’s no doubt that he was keeping up, but was he having fun? Three blips down the ‘box in Sport mode while approaching Stow-on-the-Wold to hear the delicious overrun is enough to answer that question.

Turn in for the 770 is slightly crisper, sweeter and more defined than the OG DBS. Those used to non-electrically controlled steering might find there’s a degree of magic missing, but for those used to modern setups it is sensational for something this big and heavy.

The rear end feels soft, unless you switch it to the hardest suspension setting, where it feels decidedly un-soft on broken asphalt.

Sure, the eight speed can be a bit lethargic when left to its own devices, but you’ll most likely want to drive it in manual mode.

Male Fantasy

There are no photos that can communicate the majesty of the DBS Volante. It is a beautiful object, isolated from the fact that it is a car. The classic Aston Martin grille shape is pushed to the outer edges of the fascia, with twin intakes exposing pronounced heat exchangers flanking either side. Subtle openings in the hood let casual observers in on exactly what it takes to make 715 hp.

Ekaterina Gorbacheva

Graceful details accentuate the DBS, enhancing the strong base shapes and volumes that make the car up but never stealing the show. Even the act of opening the hood is pure theater thanks to its forward-opening clamshell design, with an exploded view that’s almost as good as seeing the car in its regular, closed form. It was only once I opened the hood that I realized that there was aero detailing all over the DBS, the most pronounced of which were the fender vents which were actually air directors extracting and conditioning turbulent air from the wheel well.

The way the DBS presents you to the world is a big part of its second mission in life: make you feel hot. It’s excess, but it’s beautiful gluttony. It makes no concessions for others in proportion and size, taking up as much space as it needs to be as gorgeous as possible. When you park it, you have no choice but to turn around and marvel at it. For that fleeting moment of wonder, it also fulfills item one: make you feel like a million dollars.

Because the top comes down, the interior effectively becomes the exterior of the car. As specced, my DBS Volante’s Phantom Grey and Ivory interior was gorgeous, though clearly of a different art style than the graceful exterior. If it were my $400,000, I’d skip the Chopped Carbon trim for some wood and go for more earthy-toned leather. But also, if it were my $400,000 I’d sure like Apple CarPlay, a feature the DBS glaringly omits. Also, the center stack is nonsensical to use, with a haptic slider for volume and buttons that work only if they’ve had a good night’s sleep.

That exterior beauty translates to an exceptionally high beltline. I sat low in the DBS. Low enough that my eyes just about crested the tops of the doors, and the top of the steering wheel sat just below the center of my vision, the acreage of hood laying just beyond. Even if the rest of the car is nonsense, the start button is front and center. I sunk in deep, doing my best impression of the Maxell Blown Away Guy, and keyed the V12 into life.

What’s it like inside?

As with anything at this price range, the interior can change wildly depending on how deep your pockets are.

Saying that, the DBS is older than many of its rivals and the interior feels ancient in comparison. For this kind of money we’d expect a lot more.

9
Lots of customisation options, sadly none of them free up any more room.

For one, it’s tight. Despite being wider than a Land Rover Defender, the driver and passenger will most likely be bumping elbows if they’re in any way larger than average. The rear two seats are essentially only for storage and while the boot is wide, it’s not awfully deep.

The materials you see and touch are mostly sublime. There’s no escaping the poshness of the car, but the buttons on the steering wheel require a really firm shove. There’s nowhere to stick the key, the centre console is a bit of a mess and the infotainment screen (not a touchscreen by the way) looks a bit like a knock-off iPad from Camden market.

Certainly a Bentley Continental GT is night and day, not only in terms of comfort but in layout too.

Engine, Performance, Top Speed

The 2022 edition Aston Martin DBS comes with a improved 5.2 Litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine which boasts a power of 715 horses and can go from no to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds and can go at its maximum speeds upto 211 mph, it’s strange that the convertible model has the same top speed making the DBS one of the most monstrously quick touring car from the company ever. Paired with an eight speed automatic transmission, you just put your foot on, accelerate and this car would take you off like a rocket. You throw in some good twisty roads and feel and experience the rewarding DBS making your ride compliant, grippier and full of thrill. But remember that’s an Aston Martin DBS not the Mercedes Benz S-Class, just to let you know if ever thought you DBS should have the same level of refinement as the German cars.

Talk to us about the 770

It’s the balls-out last-in the line final hurrah for the DBS. Only 499 770 Ultimates will be built, split between 300 Coupes and 199 Volante roadsters. Rest assured, they’re already accounted for.

Cosmetic alterations include a little nip and tuck in the form of a ‘horseshoe’ vent in the bonnet and a larger diffuser at the rear. Loads of carbonfibre too. Maybe even too much carbonfibre. The new 21-inch wheels have caused a stir on the internet but to these eyes, they add to the car’s glow up.

The 5.2-litre quad-cam twin-turbo V12 beast has been upped to 759bhp (from 715bhp) thanks to a new air intake and increased boost pressure, and there’s a revised calibration for the adaptive damping system.

The Interior Of The 2023 Aston Martin DBS

Aston Martin

One of those things is a custom-made Bang & Olufson sound system that consists of seven speakers, 13-channels, two-woofers, a 250-watt sub and pumps out a full 1000-watts of sound, if for whatever reason, the music from the engine and exhaust is not enough. That system is also Apple CarPlay compatible and sports things like Bluetooth and phone streaming, and of course has GPS built in as well. In terms of safety, the DBS sports eight airbags, tire-pressure monitoring, a 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring, traction control, emergency brake assist, as well as dynamic stability control and dynamic torque vectoring.

Video game appearances

Quantum of Solace (2008)

In its first video game appearance the DBS was used by Bond to capture Mr. White at his estate. Used in the car chase of the opening credits and in a flashback to Casino Royale was used by Bond to save himself from being poisoned. It is damaged (off screen) during Bond’s pursuit of Le Chiffre. Finally the last flashback was when Bond used it to track down Mr. White.

Blood Stone (2010)

Bond chasing the bomb-rigged car.

The DBS appears in Blood Stone, along with the DB5. It is first used to chase and stop a car planning to bomb the G-20 Summit. Later in Siberia, Bond and Nicole pursue Stefan Pomerov’s train, in which they end up crashing into the train. Lastly in Monaco, Bond chases Nicole, trying to get her to stop.

007 Legends (2012)

Bond and Jinx being chased by Zao.

The DBS made it’s third video game appearance in 007 Legends. It is first seen in the Goldfinger mission when Bond exits Goldfinger’s headquarters to escape, only for him to be held at gunpoint in the car by Mr. Ling. He manages to get rid of Ling by ejecting his seat and sending him flying out of the car. The DBS was then blown up by a missile from a jet. It appeared again at the end of the On Her Majesty’s Secret Service mission with Bond and Tracy driving it before she is killed. It appeared for the final time in the Die Another Day mission, driven by Bond and Jinx with the goal of pursuing Gustav Graves’ plane. Zao interferes, with Bond using his traction and missiles to send him into an Icarus beam.

Rocket League (2022)

To coincide with the 60th anniversary of James Bond, Rocket League released the Aston Martin DBS along with the «James Bond Player Anthem», in-game for a short time in the Item Shop, from July 13 to July 19, with the DB5 and Valhalla returning also.

What Was I Made For?

Elegance gave way to brutish aggression quite quickly thereafter. The V12 barks to life with an almost antisocial growl, idling loudly for 30 seconds before settling into a quieter, neighbor-friendly idle. Though, of course, if you have a DBS, you probably won’t have many neighbors close enough to bother you.

Two buttons on the wheel control the character of the DBS. One switches between GT, Sport, and Sport Plus for the engine and drivetrain—essentially a volume knob for the V12. The other controls the adaptive dampers independent of the engine, letting you have soft dampers with a loud motor or any combination of the two. But the most important switch is hidden in a menu, and that is the stability control.

Ekaterina Gorbacheva

My first miles with the DBS were fraught—the car did not put its power down with any sort of effectiveness. Even if I felt there was more, the car would restrict torque severely in the name of not flinging billionaires into Beverly Hills hedges. It was much too restrictive, even though it might have good reason to be. It was only around fourth gear that the DBS released the reigns and gave me 715 hp. The turbos finally spooled and whistled into a high-pitched frenetic battle with the baritone confidence of the exhaust. It is unbelievably quick, almost McLaren quick.

But still, the restrictions bothered me. I searched, with an amount of fear and acceptance that I would likely turn it back on, for a traction and stability control defeat just to see what the car would do without reigns. Hidden in a menu in the gauge cluster, I found three modes to the stability control program (ESP): On, Off, and Track. Recognizing the proximity of death, I gave Track a try. Turns out, it is the single most important thing to toggle if you care to drive the DBS on a twisting canyon road.

Suddenly, instead of restricting power, the DBS would harness the horsepower and use it to adjust the attitude of the car to your desired path of travel. It would still throttle back, but only just after the tires began to slip in any direction, be it in a straight line or exiting a turn. This put the car in a reliable, consistent yaw that could be modulated with the throttle. That is not a luxury GT trait. It’s a sports car trait.

Power wasn’t its only trick; the chassis is supremely well-developed. All 4,107 pounds are accounted for during turn-in, but the DBS quickly settled and carved, carefully managing its immense weight to maximize grip. Without rear-wheel steering, the DBS will always feel a hint heavy initially, but once Newton’s first law is surmounted, it’s unbelievably composed. Brutish aggression gave way to elegance.

Ekaterina Gorbacheva

It flowed delicately, simultaneously settling its immense weight while staying light on its feet. Information about the front tires traveled up the steering column, reassuringly weighing and lightening as it dispatched undulations and bumps, always looping me into how much was left in the car. It also nudged back as the car rotated, finding that wonderful, impossible place where the car is steering itself in the midcorner and you control cornering through rotation rather than steering input.

What was truly supernatural was that this wasn’t just a spirited driving behavior, the car always felt this way. Low-speed canyon cruising offered the same experience as a good, hard drive. But even for the most spirited of drivers, Track ESP wasn’t anything nearing dangerous or unrestricted. It was optimized; clearly the mode that the DBS was meant to be driven in but still preventing any powerslides, protecting you from the very real danger of 715 hp and 4,107 pounds. It’s a rare case of a stability control system developed to enhance driving feel rather than hide weight or defeat physics.

В России начались продажи кроссоверов Aston Martin DBX

А Lamborghini Urus (650 л.с.) дороже — не менее 21 миллиона рублей.

Overview

Just like the next gen Aston Martin DB11, Aston Martin is all set with a With a roaring, 715 hp V12 monster for the 2022. We’re talking about the new Aston Martin DBS 2022 ! The people might get a hard time looking for this car and appreciate it. One would just get amazed by its speeds, as it rockets and just vanishes from the eyes. The company claims that the car can reach a top speed of mind boggling 211 mph. It’s Customers would love it to cruise on the infamous Monte Carlo Coast or any illigal speed roads as it has everything to satisfy the driver’s fantasy with a track ready capability, posh interior, sharp handling, Bond-esque styling, compared to it’s rivals such as Ferrari 812 Superfast and McLaren 765LT which haven’t got it all making this DBS a perfect car.

No Time to Die

The 2023 Aston Martin DBS Volante was a real surprise. The big, red convertible only really needed to be an excessive toy for someone with too much money, but it went star systems beyond what it needed to be.

Ekaterina Gorbacheva

It isn’t as nice inside as a comparably priced Bentley Continental GTC, nor is it as functional, nor is it as well-featured. On top of its perplexing lack of Apple CarPlay, the DBS also doesn’t get adaptive cruise control, meaningful ambient lighting, or an infotainment system made in this decade. On paper, the DBS is extremely barebones compared to the Bentley.

In practice, it’s a different car for a different kind of person. It’s for someone who wants less gimmicks and more genuine theater, and a car that has a true heart of gold. While the Conti handles well but joylessly, the DBS Volante is a truly great driver’s car. It’s a shame, then, that Aston Martin says the DBS will die with this generation. Canceled, after the release of the DBS 770 Ultimate and V8-powered DB12.

The DBS Volante does three things, then. It definitely makes you feel hot, and certainly makes you feel rich. The third thing it makes you feel is real, genuine, non-cynical driving joy. Anybody could love this car. And I’ll be sad to see it go.

5.2-Liter V12 715-Horsepower Powertrain

via Aston Martin

Once you catch your breath and come to grips with just how visually stunning the DBS is, there is even more to take your breath away. Aston Martins have never had a rep for being slow cars by any means, heavy perhaps, but slow, never. And the new DBS is no exception to either of those historical associations. Power comes from a front-mid mounted, direct-injected, twin-turbocharged, all-aluminum 5.2-liter DOHC V12 that creates a ridiculous 715-horsepower at 6,500 RPM and an equally impressive 663 pound-feet of torque that begins at an incredibly low 1,800 RPM and stays at that peak all the way to 5,000 RPM. That engine comes with enough engineering ingenuity as anything Bond ever got from M, and it isn’t even the hybrid monster the Valkyrie uses. Dual-variable camshaft timing, fully CNC machined combustion chambers, stainless steel exhaust with crossover pipe, and let’s not forget the water-to-air intercooler to keep things performing at max. Though we are sad to report, there are still no rocket launchers or ejector seats on the production models.

That power is then funneled through a paddle-shifted, rear mid-mounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission through an aluminum torque tube and viscous-coupling differential, ultimately ending at the forged aluminum 21-inch rear wheels. Those huge rims are shod in Pirelli PZero 265/35 ZR-21 front and even bigger 305/30 ZR-21 rear rubber, and do their very best to keep all 4,107 pounds of DBS planted to the tarmac. Also fighting with that 4000-plus curb weight are massive 16.1-inch front and 14.1-inch rear carbon-ceramic ventilated disc brakes.

History

Casino Royale (2006)

The Aston Martin DBS V12 was first seen in Casino Royale. In the film, the car only features a spare gun and a defibrillator. The car was later destroyed during Bond’s pursuit of Le Chiffre.

Aston Martin delivered two working ‘hero’ cars to the film. As well as the two ‘hero’ cars, Aston Martin had to prepare three former development DB9’s for use as DBS look-a-like stunt cars. Also a white prototype DB9 manual was supplied to the film crew so that the stunt drivers had something to practice with.

Due to the low centre of gravity of the vehicle, an 18-inch (450 mm) ramp had to be implemented on the road tarmac at Millbrook Proving Grounds and Adam Kirley, the stunt driver who performed the stunt, had to use an air cannon located behind the driver’s seat to propel the car into a roll at the precise moment of impact. At a speed exceeding 70 mph (113 km/h), the car rotated seven times while being filmed, and was confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records on 5 November 2006 as a new world record.

Quantum of Solace (2008)

The DBS briefly returns in Quantum of Solace. Set directly after Casino Royale, Bond is speeding to the MI6 safehouse with Mr. White to interrogate him, while being chased by White’s henchmen.

Quantum of Solace was the last in Ford Motor’s three-film deal that began with 2002’s Die Another Day. Although Ford sold over 90% of the Aston Martin company in 2007, the Aston Martin DBS V12 returned for the film’s pre-title car chase around Lake Garda;Dan Bradley was hired as second unit director because of his work on the second and third Bourne films, so the film would continue the gritty action style begun in Casino Royale. He had intended to use Ford GTs for the opening chase, but it was replaced by the Alfa Romeo 159. After location filming in Italy, further close-ups of Craig, the cars and the truck were shot at Pinewood against a bluescreen. Originally three Alfa Romeos were in the sequence: but Forster felt the scene was running too long and re-edited the scene so it only looked like two Romeos were chasing Bond.

Ten cars where supplied by Aston Martin. Six ‘hero’ cars ,needed for close-ups and promotional work, all survived filming unharmed with four more cars used for special effects and stunts. One of them was purchased by a fan.

Overheated

There is nothing about the DBS Volante that would suggest that it’s a driver’s car. On paper, it’s the farthest thing from it. For starters, it weighs a planetary 4,107 pounds which is a clear 300 pounds heavier than the fixed-roof DBS. It’s hideously overpowered for a rear-wheel-drive car as well, with 715 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque being sent to the rear wheels via a rear-mounted ZF eight-speed transaxle. Then there’s the issue that it’s a luxury convertible, not a focused sports coupe.

But it’s built on an extremely capable, if aging, body structure. Dual-wishbone suspension all around provides fine control of suspension geometry, while conventional steel springs and adaptive dampers hoist the considerable mass of the drop-top. Gargantuan carbon-ceramic brakes just about bring the whole party to a stop, while that rear-mounted gearbox and convertible top mechanism contribute to an incredibly impressive 50/50 weight distribution.

And that V12 is all Aston Martin, no AMG V8 to be seen here. It’s all glory, all excess, and one of the centerpieces of the DBS experience. The other highlight is, of course, the way it looks.

Aston Martin DBS Performance — 0-60 MPH In 3.4 Seconds

Close

Avid Aston fans might notice that for 2023 the company decided to drop the ‘Superleggera’ addendum to the DBS’ name. Now, the only additional verbiage you can add to your DBS is if you opt for the drop-top version, called the DBS Volante. No matter if you go with the coupe or convertible, the DBS flat-out flies. According to Aston Martin, they tested the DBS from 0-62 mph (which is 0-100 KM/H) in a scant 3.4 seconds, on its way to a top speed of a spine-tingling 211 MPH. In an independent test versus the Bentley Continential GT and Ferrari Roma, Top Speed ran the DBS through the quarter mile and trapped an impressive 11.7 seconds.

Inside, the DBS is every bit the luxury car its price tag suggests it should be. With no less than 38 different colors available for its perforated and quilted leather interior, the DBS defines the word posh. If leather isn’t your thing, there is also an option for Alcantara. Aside from the lovely heated,16-way adjustable power seats, there is also an 8.0-inch touchscreen sitting front and center of the dashboard that handles all things infotainment.
